The Two Black Crows series was the most popular comedy series of the pre-war era. Copies show up at thrift stores, junk stores, and in seemingly every collection of 78's. There is, however, ONE Two Black Crows disc that is rare, with an estimated 50 or fewer copies existing.

When I first saw the video I thought you were going to talk about the rock band The Black Crowes!

Being an advanced collector of 50+ years, I can say that while I was aware of this disc, this is the first time that that I have seen the label and also hearing it.

I just started collecting a few months ago, and I have randomly acquired two copies of the first record! I have been a little scared to listen to it, let alone share it on my 78s channel.

The first one is pretty funny! If you don't want to share it that is understandable. It's not kosher by modern standards, but there are several copies floating around on youtube if someone wants to find them.

Amazing stuff, thanks! I found out about the Two Black Crows through KZfaq about a year ago. I didn't know they were that big in comedy records! I also just found out today that for decades on the radio, Amos and Andy were voiced by white actors. Learn something new everyday, yessum.

I wonder if you are aware that Moran and Mack also made a 12 inch record on the Columbia 50000 series. I can't remember the titles, but I came across a copy in a collection I bought from a neighbor back in the early 70's when I was a teenager, new at collecting. She had been a professional dancer in a family act with her parents and sister in vaudeville when she was a little kid starting somewhere just before 1900. She had a large record collection mostly from the late 1920's. There were a number of great Jazz records in there too. I had a collector acquaintance at the time who was older than I was, who was a huge Moran and Mack fan. When I mentioned almost by accident that I had this record, he didn't believe me. He had been collecting for years and had never heard of it. When I showed it to him he almost fell over. I traded it to him for some Bessie Smith and Fletcher Henderson records. I haven't seen or heard about a copy since. One side of it has piano accompaniment by Lucky Roberts. Also, they are not billed as Two Black Crows on the labels. One side is Moran accompanied by Mack on one side and Mack accompanied by Moran on the other. The single most outstanding record from that collection was Vocalion 1099. Jimmy Bertrand's Washboard Wizards doing, I'm Goin Huntin/If You Want to Be My Sugar Papa, You Got to Be Sweet to Me, which includes Louis Armstrong playing trumpet from 1927. 78 Quarterly said there are approximately 25 copies out there. I guess that means that there are at least 26, because they didn't ask me. You seem to be one of the very few informed collectors here on You Tube. Thanks for your content.

Hello! I don't know of any Columbia 12" discs issued by those two beyond Elder Eatmore's Sermon on Throwing Stones. (Columbia 50061) Roberts is the pianist on "Our Child", which is on the other side. The Columbia files don't list any additional TBC discs by Moran or Mack that were pressed in a 12" size. I didn't include this as there are copies that don't mention TBC on the label, and others that mention "M&M OF Two Black Crows", however I have since seen a label variation that shows M&M - Two Black Crows", which would make it canonical TBC content. If there are any other discs with TBC on them, I am not aware of them (which wouldn't be news... I am not aware of a lot of things) One other fun note is that Vaughn DeLeath is the female voice on that disc, and I have always been a DeLeath fan. I have been digging for records for a long time and I don't have a copy of that Bertrand disc on Vocalion 1099. In fact I only have a handful of 1000 series Vocalion discs from 30+ years of searching. It's ALWAYS nice to find a disc that is listed in the 78Q listings!

Interesting. Wow, I feel foolish now. I saw these records, many, many times, and always thought there was just the one! It's so interesting that, in 1926, Freeman Gosden and Charles Carrell would "steal" this act and begin a radio show in Chicago called "Sam n' Henry". It would become the monstrously popular "Amos and Andy" weekly national radio show. I wonder why Moran and Mack themselves did not get offered to make their act a radio series.

I think Moran and Mack did have a radio show, but no recordings of it exist. Personally, I think Gosden and Correll were far more talented and better comedians than Moran and Mack. Mi dos centavos. But anyone who likes Moran and Mack and Gosden and Correll would also like Miller and Lyles, two actual Black comedians whose act could be considered a forerunner to them both.
