All actors of the 40's and 50's, outperform all modern actors out there! Also, even a "B" movie of that time, is ten times better, than the best movies they make nowdays, from any kind of view. We live the era, where we have everything, but in reality, we have NOTHING, because they've turned us into beasts. We've lost our quality as human beings, because we lost all our virtues. There is no logic, no love, no respect, no patience, no nothing today....

A message to those who were involved with this film although I know they may never read it. Here I am in 2019 watching a film that was made over 60 years ago and I enjoyed it far more than most films made today. I hesitated because I never expect much from a WWII era film, but watched it because of Jack Hawkins and Gia Scala. Really happy I did. It's a fabulous film. No need for sex scenes, it had love and romance. No need for high tech and fancy camera work. It had good writing, directing, filming and brilliant acting. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Almost recalls to mind Kirk Douglas, after his stroke, saying, "What does an actor do when he can't talk? Wait for silent movies to come back?" As for Hawkins, thankfully, filmmakers still wanted him so bad that they arranged, with his total support, for certain actors to dub his voice in the movies he did following his surgery. He worked almost right up to the end, almost six years later.

This is the first time I have ever seen Jack Hawkins. His depiction of this great Scottish hero is so riveting, his acting so convincing that I feel myself tense and wound up tighter than a spinning top, and I am only 28 minutes into this! It is amazing to me that flesh and blood people looked death and destruction in the eye, day after day for years, and didn't blink! We owe so much to them, that we are free people today. . .
