10 жыл бұрынBBC Saturday Sportsday visited Pontypool RFC prior to the start of the 2014 Six Nations highlighting the current struggles faced in Welsh club rugby despite the fantastic success of the Welsh national team over recent seasons.
The segment includes interviews by BBC Sports Correspondent, Joe Wilson with Pontypool RFC President, Graham Price and Corporate Director, Ben Jeffreys.
The segment aired on February 1st 2014 following an open letter which Jeffreys sent to WRU Chief Executive, Roger Lewis and SWALEC Chief Executive, Alistair Phillips-Davies, outlining concerns for the future of club rugby in Wales. Probably one of the best props to play the game, I saw him play live in the early 80’s. Bath v Pontypool in a midweek game. One scrum right in front of me you could here the bath hard man (😂)Gareth Chilcott screaming, Price got up from the scrum laughing !

Newport RFC Fan here. Regional rugby could never really work. We have been shafted over Rodney Parade.

Most of the time, the crowd are looking at the big screen hoping their image will pop up. Not rugby fans at all. Like Graham said, more of a social occasion.

Welsh Rugby should of went to Northern Rugby Union/League back in 1895 and then both games in Wales and Northern England would be a lot stronger then they are now and teams like Cardiff, Neath, Ebbw Vale and the Pontys etc could of been playing in top flight Rugby even full time Championship with the likes Wigan, Widnes, Bradford, Hull and Whithaven etc

Professionalism not the wru has killed rugby in Wales. Just like it did with Welsh football.
