A few have struggled to understand the punch line of this joke and have even requested an explanation, so I thought this might help some. We find the two men live in the same sort of house, same road, shape, size etc. Ronnie C's character has already wallpapered his front room and had told Ronnie's B character that he had bought 8 rolls of wallpaper for it. That's the key to the punch line of the joke, Ronnie C had only told Ronnie B how many rolls he had bought, NOT how many he had used! (as people often over purchase to make sure they have enough). So Ronnie B's character therefore also purchased 8 rolls, being given the impression that was how many was needed to wallpaper the same size room. The key to the joke is that Ronnie C didn't tell Ronnie B that he only actually needed/used 6 of the 8 rolls, i.e. he had 2 left over, so in turn Ronnie B's character repeated the error and also ended up with 2 left over. How many rolls someone buys versus how many rolls someone uses is the important distinction.

@@JintySteam1 The joke is that Ronnie C told Ronnie B that he had _bought_ 8 rolls of wallpaper, but didn't tell him he only needed to _use_ 6. The punchline is Ronnie C's ignorance to this fact and passing off their identical predicament as a strange coincidence.

Here's what I hear: Hear, do you know we live in the same sort of house? Yeah. Same road, same shape, same sized rooms Yeah. Well, you know when you papered your front room, you told me you bought eight rolls of wallpaper. That's right, yeah. Well, I just papered our front room. Oh, yeah. I bought eight rolls of wallpaper. When I finished, I had two over. That's funny - so did I.

I'm British, 27 and I've seen this sketch many times as I have the best of DVD but I still don't understand it.

"I had two over" means I had two rolls of wallpaper left over. He's bought 8 rolls, because his friend told him he bought 8 rolls for himself to wallpaper a room virtually the same. The joke is, if his friend told him "oh hey, you only need six rolls", then he wouldn't have wasted his money on two needless rolls. It's that look of "oh you twat, why didn't you say something earlier" he gives him at the end I find the funniest. It's also kind of a comment on the Britsh trait with lack of sharing info. That sort of "My business is my business, why would someone else care if I told them" thing here has backfired. It would have been of value if he'd shared that it only took him 6 rolls to do the job, but now both of them have two uneeded rolls of wallpaper.

jonty is not necessarily british - so to respect those in the world who need educating in british humour lets be generous - this sketch is a typical example of street humour , To get a a modern taste of british humour you need to watch the UK Parliament live TV on wednesdays 1200 GMT - prime minister's question time! This place employs most of the UKs jokers - at public expence. www.parliamentlive.tv I'm sorry that Jonty's request for clarification has taken me two years to respond!

The joke is that at first we think they’re living in the same house (with a running suspicion that Corbett stole Barker’s wallpaper), but they actually live in different ones.
