Life in Jars?

This is the two year update video on the huge natural saltwater ecosphere, or seaosphere. In this video we briefly go over the events of the past two years and take a look at how this closed ecosystem is doing now. We take a look at the algae living in the ecosphere, as well as all the animals; plankton, paramecium, crustaceans, (even a tardigrade!) living in this glass jar. This video features a lot of microscopic footage. The two year update on the little saltwater world on my windowsill.
Enjoy!

i think it would be really fun, if, at the end of the year and your studies you sat down and talked about your first year college experience. i love that genre of videos since i aspire to be in college soon as possible, but i also think it would be nice to hear your take on what they taught you about ecology in school and whether youd like to pursue that path as well as which concentration you would be interested in. im also curious if youd be planning on doing research or not as some people enjoy it and others do not

Great video. So glad you mentioned bubble algae. I now finally know what it is I saw just two days ago on the seafloor in Curacao at a depth of about 1 meter. At first I thought it was a spherical piece of glass of about 1-2cm. I tried digging it out but it was firmly stuck. I noticed it was elastic so it had to be organic. I had absolutely no idea what it was but since you mentioned bubble algae I googled it and there it was. The organism I never knew existed.

I got inspired. So I now made my first life in a jar. Exiting! It is a big old square plastic candy basket, with an airtight lid on top. I threw in (in order) compost, pond water, some fern leaves (with spores!), moss, fallen autumn tree leaves, a bird feather, some extra dirt that I know has an earthworm in it, and I topped it up by throwing in a fly that I caught by hand. I might have put in too much water in it, noting the water level. But we'll see. I already noticed, just 1 hour later... 1 small spider, an ant, a woodlice, and of course the earthworm and the fly I put in myself. I think I saw some other things crawl around... but not sure yet. ... I hope I did not put too much rotting stuff in it. So I have to make sure the plastic lid does not go bloated and pop off. I'll have to keep an eye out for that. If it does not happen, I'll tape up the top shut. If it does go bloated in some days... I'll probably have to let some air out. before closing permanently.... But what an interesting hobby! I can not stop watching at the thing. Hoping something will move. Tomorrow at daylight I'll start making photos of it. I got a micro lens, So I will be able to make good closeups. Too bad the plastic is not as see through as glass. I bought a glass bottle, but before I got home... it already cracked. It was too thin. I'll need a better glass jar. But first I want to see what the plastic candy basket does.

Plastic lense restorer like Plastex fills in scratches. There's also stuff for cloudy white car headlights you can try. Dollar tree has this large magnifying film the size of a page in the school/office isle you can prop it up and in crafts isle they have packs of large flattened glass marble drops, aka cow eyes. Glue a few around your container for magnifying peepholes. Though I hear chemicals leech through plastics, even the plastic itself breaks down in sunlight but we're talking water bottles, your candy jar is probably more stable. They make plastic aquariums so you might check to see if they have a special surface restorer
