Anyone who is paying attention in America probably intuitively understands that there is something deeply wrong with how the police and criminal justice systems interact with black people and other people of color. But we don't always know the exact facts and data to back up this inclination, which could possibly have the effect of making us less convincing when trying enact societal changes and reforms. It also gives bad-faith debaters and figures ammo against us in this conversations. This video is designed to help on that front.

When looking at minorities to majority population, who commits more crimes is not the same as who gets charged, arrested or convicted of more crimes. A lot of crime gets overlooked depending on whether or not you're white. Add to that how much police attention is directed towards black people and other minorities when no crime is committed, police somehow can find something to identify as a crime when there is a bias against minorities. People need to stop associating levels of "crime" with whether or not policing is appropriate. Our laws/policies and history are set up to keep people oppressed. We need total justice reform on top of police reform.

I didnt realize that I was aging up a person (specifically black teens) in my head until I started working in a convenience store. I read an article about racial bias in the perception of age one day and then all of a sudden I realized I wasn't really carding young black people as much as young white people because in my head they just were young adults, not teens or kids, which is fucked. I had no idea I was even doing it. It's a surreal feeling to have your bias laid out in front of you in such a literal and tangible way

Another common argument is that they're not racist, they just treat all poor/low-income people the same, and there are more minorities living in poverty . This argument is ironic for at least two reasons; one: it illuminates the effects that slavery, and the advantage of land-ownership has had on African American communities (that they would staunchly deny in any other argument); and two, it doesn't explain why wealthy and middle class black people are still stopped and questioned in their own middle class/wealthy neighborhoods, going into their own houses, and driving their own cars (arguably still being assumed to not be the owners). The empirical evidence for racism and bias is strong; people just can't grasp the impact it has on other's lives.

any interpretation of data that strictly compares "black vs white" and doesn't take into account income or access to wealth is disingenuous. Rich white people get better treatment than poor white people, that shouldn't be a shock to anyone. Any examination of data that compares 2 groups with a massive wealth disparity is going to show the same trend.

Literally everything is connected and what I do here in this very rural county I live in affects those who live in the cities I have also lived in and vice versa, at least to some minute degree. Voting is a good example, but it goes much deeper. Consider another example: that the pollution from my cars exhaust goes into the very same air you breathe, or how the corona virus is spread (or any other virus). Two stories from where I grew up on the Canadian Prairies, often dubbed the crime capital of Canada: 1. There was a cop for a long time in my neighborhood which has been full of crime for as long as most people can remember. It's extremely gentrified and the differences in wealth were striking always. Community housing and luxurious homes were separated only by a few feet of sidewalk. This cop and many more like him bought out smaller apartments and placed at-risk youth there, who were sometimes on probation after committing crimes like drug possession or shoplifting. The media painted this as a kindness, but almost every one of these at-risk youth was used as a scapegoat or blackmailed with the threat of being a scapegoat if they didn't pay absurdly high rent rates. I know because I talked to many people who were the victim of this disgusting practice. That cop is still there and still doing this. He has been reported many times for planting drugs and blackmail, but each time a jury of his fellow officers, many of whom get the same benefits as he does, has found him not guilty time and again. 2. A teenager's family told medical services of his involvement in the gang and his possession of three firearms. The psychologists there said they would need a police investigation before anything could be done. After a short, hours-long investigation, the police concluded there was nothing suspicious. Two weeks later, this kid along with two of his friends carried out a gang shooting. They were each tried as adults and given 20 years. This is the point of the police. Moving crime into poorer areas and keeping it there, and vilifying the communities. It is disgusting and morally reprehensible on every level. Anyone who still apologises for the police after hearing the statistics and hearing testimonies gets no sympathy from me. The police need to be defunded because worse than useless, they actively harm communities and are a real and dangerous risk to the well-being of everyone, people of colour especially.

As a little white lady who grew up in the sheltered countryside of Devon, England, what's happening in this world is making me deeply sad right now. Deeply sad, impotently angry for the minorities who are being so horribly mistreated and genuinely scared for the future. America is under the magnifying glass right now, but that doesn't mean it's not going on in other countries too; the UK has its own form of systemic racism, we've just had more practice at cloaking it in 'Cholmondely-Warner politeness' (a Harry Enfield reference for those old enough to remember it in the UK.) Long live the Progressives, and may they never stop shouting about the injustices, even when it does annoy the heck out of the alt-right!

My dad was an Irish-American lieutenant in Chicago for 25 years. I haven't spoken to him in several years, but the way he use to talk about black and Hispanic residents with his colleagues when I was a little kid forever solidified my belief that there is a culture of racism among white (and Hispanic) cops. It doesn't apply to every cop, sure, it's not in every city, sure. But there is most certainly a problem that goes beyond "a few bad cops." When we find a runway model who doesn't have an eating disorder, or a soldier without PTSD, no one says "look, got you!" The problem is ingrained within the system itself. A noble, non-racist cop doesn't change that.
@nerif2849
@nerif2849 3 жыл бұрын
I mean what if those people you saw just were those few bad cops? Don't confuse your personal experience for universal experience. Some people go there whole life without meeting a racist cop so they might assume they don't exist at all but that is equally a bad belief. Base your beliefs off facts and data. The facts and data show overwhelmingly there isn't the racism you think there is. There are way more black cops than people think. Media lying for $$$ same as always.

When I first heard the third point, about how there's no correlation between the crime rate and the rate at which police kill people, it set off alarm bells in my head that ring to this day. Think about how that could possibly come about.
@lukelathrop7516
@lukelathrop7516 3 жыл бұрын
The source T1J cites for evidence that there is no correlation between police killings and violent crime is the huffington post. The huffington post displays a graph with the police killing rates and violent crime rates of several different cities across the US. The issue with this comparison is it doesn't take into account the difference in the police to civilian ratios in the different cities, which is very significant. There are two sides to every interaction. In this case it is the police and criminals, but the graph only takes into account the criminals. The more police in a city, the more police interactions.

@@michaeln3044 It’s not a viable point. The origin of this claim is from FBI statistics. Even these statistics show that Black people were arrested for 38.7% of homicides when you include thousands of homicides where the race of the perpetrator was unknown, so the people using this statistic don’t actually use it correctly. Even when you use the 38.7% figure, the FBI’s statistics are a joke for the following reasons: 1. The statistic refers to arrests made, not even convictions made. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) stats are collected from law enforcement, not courts. If police departments are racist and disproportionately arrest Black suspects (which they do), then the number of “Black homicides” would artificially increase. 2. It relies on voluntary reports from local law enforcement agencies, so it suffers from selection bias. Law enforcement agencies are essentially allowed to choose whether to disclose their data or not. 3. The UCR program admits that it doesn’t have a real means of ensuring that the data they receive is reliable. “The accuracy of the statistics depends primarily on the adherence of each contributor to the established standards of reporting. It is the responsibility of each state UCR Program or individual contributing law enforcement agency to submit accurate monthly statistics or correct existing data that are in error.”

I’m a conservative who doesn’t readily believe the “systemic institutionalized white supremacy” line. You make excellent points. What if what we’re seeing in society is the sociologically understood notion of “distrusting the other” as too-easily applied to skin color? It doesn’t excuse the notion, but it helps explain the notion. This IMO may be an “unintended consequence” of a deliberately crafted multiethnic society wherein all ethnicities except the majority ethnicity are inherently celebrated and also told “You’re a victim of the majority”. I’ll never deny the ugly aspects of our American past, and I hope we can find solutions to this issue. I only hope Balkanization is not the “solution” we arrive at.

America was built on white supremacy though. And it still permeates through everything: legislation, policing, culture, etc. Why does crack carry such a higher penalty than cocaine? Because they were targeting minorities and people in less affluent areas because slavery was never fully abolished. It's illegal except for as a punishment for a crime, hence why the prison industrial complex is so large and routinely pays inmates less than 10 cents an hour. Police routinely target POC for stop and frisk type policies, and are also tasked with enforcing racist policies. And culturally, the racial biases start at a very young age. Children of all races tend to say that white or lighter skinned people are good and black or darker skinned people are bad when they take a racial bias tests. That continues as people age unless they activity work to change those biases. Teachers tend to give more positive attention the white kids and negative attention to black kids. Which leads to the school to prison pipeline where kids who get suspended or expelled tend to not finish high school and eventually end up in jail

And so on... let’s not pretend the horrors of ethnic based slavery/supremacy are limited to the creation of the US. Such actions are actually common through human history. Let’s not get so wrapped up in the “social cause du jour” we make it The Singular Cause for all contemporary society’s ills. Racism as a *factor* in these things? Absolutely. “Institutionalized Systemic White Supremacy” as The Only Factor causing ALL the issues between communities? Not a chance. Especially as the viral promotion of “White Fragility” paints ALL whites as inescapably racist, guilty by way of association, without chance of pardon or parole, incapable of innocence much less proven thereof... It’s a garbage, dangerous concept which seeks to paint a single race into a blur of pain. And nothing good has ever happened when the heartbeat of the individusl is replaced with a brush that only cares about the group. It’s a disgusting concept that draws inspiration from the oppression of early religion. Suggesting an original sin aspect that needs to be cleansed to create a manufactured built in guilt. I think I know enough to say that there’s a problem. I wish I could say I knew enough to say how to fix it. One thing a friend pointed out to me is how much pressure police get to “do their jobs” and punish criminals... basically go in guns blazing. The police are how the problem manifests, and in many cases they are eager participants, but we can’t fix the police without dealing with the larger social issues. “Those without the capital get the penalty” and “all the justice you can afford” are a big part of why the police use black communities to keep up their bean counts.

The constant disparities in the data we observe between black and non-black people's outcomes he thought was best accounted for by the theory that of racialised essences. Whereas moralised preferential treatment is far more likely to be true. And no matter what reasons I gave, he would not budge. Like he was not open to alternative reasons. So when I try to provide evidence, I'm usually met with a string of excuses as to how my source is a propaganda machine or how my own experiences and real life observations are just isolated experiences or that it doesn't matter because all of those people end up being criminals anyway. It's aggravating and disheartening to hear the blatant disregard for facts. I will take this information you've provided and do my own research with the sources you provided as well. I was following the thread about the way to refer to latinxs so I might chime in to clarify... It's not supposed to be pronounced X but just like the e in "Elefant". This is a genre deconstruction of the spanish language where genre is defined in the nouns (a for female, o for male), and for plural, male is the default (much like saying "guys" to a group that comprises more than just men). While it is gaining momentum, it's not that widespread, usually older people don't like it and, of course, conservative groups of all ages. I myself use it ocassionally in some plurals but don't think I'll get used to it that much (I'm 33 for reference) to speak like that with every single gendered noun in the spanish language. It's really nice to see that you took the time to find out and use it, it is really appreciated!

Great analysis - what is the way forward though? - protests should be a means to an end - I struggle to believe the right approach is defunding the police (depending exactly what that looks like) but would love to hear your ideas for some solutions

Great video! if I may I give a conservative opinion on this; the argument from most reasonable conservatives I think is not that black people don't face unfair advantages on average or that people don't have biases and that they subconsciously don't act on those biases. Bias against black people has been empirically established. I think instead that conservatives would dispute two positions of BLM the movement: a) that the police are on average more racist than the general population b) that defunding the police on aggregate won't result in increased human suffering. My own view is that unfortunately, humans tend to generalize and stereotype based on easily recognizable traits even on a subconscious level and any feature, whether that be accent and voice or physical appearance and skin colour, that is possessed by people who are on average poorer and therefore commit more crimes will lead to that trait being subconsciously regarded with fear and suspicion. That's not to say that America doesn't have a strong history of racism or that the poverty of the black community is a historical result of racism because I believe both those propositions to be true. But how is this to be fixed? The only solution to this problem can be the financial and educational improvement of the black community as well as taking steps to bring down the overall rate of police killings. I watch your videos because I find you to be a reasonable and highly intelligent voice within the progressive community; my humble request for you, therefore, is to do a video explaining why a) and b) are true, which seems to be the crux of the issue. If it were true that the police are no more biased than general American society and that even liberals have a subconscious racial bias, how can the mere discussion of racial issues and an increase of general 'wokeness' have the effect of decreasing police brutality? Similarly, what is the evidence that defunding the police won't lead to an increase in the crime rate? Would not an increased crime rate lead to the further impoverishment of the black community? Anyway, very interesting video that did make me think, I hope you don't mind a conservative regular viewer.

I really like this community it just shows how both sides can actually have a respectable discussion with out complete denial of both sides views or points it seems like opposing sides only want to take each other down especially in recent years instead of actually caring for the root.

Obviously not T1J, but offering my opinion. I don't think individual members of the police force are more racist than the general population, I think they're just AS racist as any given member of the general population, but given more privileges and power than the average citizen to enact whatever racism they individually may harbor. We do know the modern police force has it's roots in racism as the police force initially organized in the 1800s to protect economic goods and as slave patrols in the South. Given this - and the data T1J so eloquently presented - we have a racist police force operating exactly as it was created to do. As for b) I've watched many videos on how defunding the police and reinvesting that money that into different social services could actually lead to decreased human suffering, because the social services get at the root of the problem, while the police largely are just responding (and escalating).
@fiammacatalani1642
@fiammacatalani1642 3 жыл бұрын
What is the actual proof for b) though? I know many people say that it will work, but saying and wishing something will work and it actually working are two different things. If those people are wrong about this and we try it anyway, people will die. My fear stems from the fact that there's no country in the world that doesn't have a police force. If it were possible to abolish the police and maintain order in society just by social services, wouldn't someone have done it by now? And those regions that have a reduced police force usually had low crime, to begin with. I'd argue that low crime made strong policing in those areas unnecessary but people seem to be assuming that the causation goes the other way and that reducing police presence is what lowered the crime. Perhaps there can be an experiment where the police are defunded in small high crime towns for a few years to see how it works in practice? if it works in those small regions then I say great, let's do it. Do you agree that given our current knowledge there is at least a chance that the consequences might potentially be disastrous if we defund the police nationwide?

@@fiammacatalani1642 "And those regions that have a reduced police force usually had low crime, to begin with." That is the goal. The excess money that was going to the police, is now being used in places in the community that would lower crime rate. Defunding the police while investing into the local community will only have a disastrous outcome if we don't follow through with the second half. (which is definitely a possibility)

I wish you (or any popular KZfaqr) specifically said the words: "Simpsons Paradox" and explained it while you were discussing black interactions with police at around 4:00 minutes. Especially against the "when you for control for *the number of encounters* , black people are under-represented in police killings" argument, which is often put forth by conservatives like Candace Owens. But how does this address Kenosha, Minneapolis or Rochester? It really doesn’t. Those 3 people all GOT THE COPS CALLED ON THEM BY OTHER PEOPLE OF COLOR because they were harassing, stealing, or acting psychotic toward other people of color. The cops came to help because that’s their job. The people continued on their path and didn’t cooperate even, in one instance, when the cop's guns were drawn. These people all made really bad choices that ended up hurting, not only themselves, but many other people around them. I feel bad for them, but the cops didn’t really do anything wrong in these cases. So, even if your statistics were true, these cases, which are being cited to justify looting, rioting, arson, harassment and even murder, are simply destroying any credibility the movement might otherwise have. This is why BLM is seen by most Americans as disingenuous and fake.

“Unarmed” doesn’t mean “not violent” or “not a threat.” I know I’ll probably catch heat for this, but Michael Brown was “unarmed” while he was beating the hell out of a cop and trying to take his gun. Jacob Blake was “unarmed” while he was reaching into a car (where a knife was later found) with children in it, after he had just fought with police and taken shots from a taser twice. Rayshard(sp?) Brooks was “unarmed” according to the media, even though he had taken a cop’s taser, and was turning to point it at them when he was shot. These are just a few examples of the term “unarmed” being used disingenuously to push a narrative. A narrative, might I add, that makes the people who push it a LOT of money. We can have a conversation about racial bias in policing, but we have to start making that conversation honest. Personally, I don’t believe a racial bias exists on a large scale, but I am open to having a discussion, so long as we’re 100% honest about it.

Excellent video, this is a really succinct and well constructed overview. I had one comment regarding the language at 5:40. I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that police officers should not be considered distinct from "civilians", because it's a term used to distinguish military personnel. The misuse of that term might contribute to a sense that the police enter communities as some kind of military unit, and thus increase the likelihood that they'll use violent force against a "hostile" population. Kind of a weird side effect of the militarization of the police force.

I think one of the best idea out there is a universal basic income. To invest in the people is the only way to even the playing field for all. It'd give people a financial safety net, giving them the time and power to take control of thier situation and choose what they want to do with thier lives. I highly recommend listening to Andrew Yang when he was on joe rogan. Humanity needs not to go left, nor right, but forward. Together.
