In the uncertain atmosphere of the early 1960s, the Soviet Union, fueled by a mix of fear and ambition, pushed the boundaries of nuclear testing. Specially modified to give its crew a chance, the Tu-95 was painted in ghostly anti-flash white. It was as much a test for the bomb as it was for the bomber, which, decades later, remains as current as ever as part of Russia’s ambitions.
