Unfortunately this is something that varies from person to person. Coffee for most people is fine, different people have different bodies and it creates so many factors that it's honestly hard to make huge sweeping recommendations on anything. So if this is working for you, that's awesome glad your reflux is going down :). If others dont have this though and worrying about giving up the drink they shouldn't worry too much.

Can we talk about how people with ADHD (like me) often benefit from caffeine? I drink a cup and take a nap. Caffeine naps are incredible and I sleep better with some form of stimulant in my system. I drink less coffee now that I am on ADHD medication, but if I am really struggling or I forget to refill on time (that’s pretty common since it has to be refilled manually every month) coffee goes a long way to help me in my daily life.

OMG PLEASE! It helps me sort my brain out a bit in the morning, like everyone else, but if I have multiple large coffees a day I usually feel…no adverse effects. I feel calm and more productive! Plus I’ve got a condition called POTS - and there’s anecdotal evidence going each way when it comes to caffeine (i.e. for some it makes it better, for others it makes it worse) and for me it…helps slow my heart down? Somehow? I figure part of it is the fact stimulants have an atypical effect if you have ADHD, but it’s still kinda hilarious

I would definitely like a follow-up video exploring current clinical research on using caffeine to treat ADHD. I find it interesting that amphetamines are often perscribed to treat ADHD since this a family of stimulants and vasoconstrictors just as caffeine also is. I have seen clinical research concluding both for and against using caffeine as a cheaper and less-regulated substitute for amphetamines to treat ADHD, so it would be nice to have an unbiased presentation showing both sides of clinical research in this area.

I have ADHD and used to drink like 4-5 cups of coffee every day for years. After cutting all the caffeine, my ADHD is almost gone. Maybe it really helps with adhd when it's consumed in smaller doses and not regularly, but if you are addicted and drink coffee every day, it can worsen your adhd symptoms.

Day 34 no caffeine. I think of it time to time but really don’t miss it. My drug of choice was a 5 hour energy a day, even when I didn’t feel I needed it. Ordered the stuff two cases at a time from Walmart and Amazon. Looked forward to the 5 min initial pick me up. I know, sad. Had to let it go. Too much anxiety. Replaced Starbucks. 17 years of caffeine to feel upbeat and energetic. Not how long it will last. Be encouraged.

It could also be Raynaud's Phenomenon. (What I have) It causes the blood vessels in your hands and feet to spasm, sporadically, and as a result makes them cold. The fun part of it all is how much warm water "burns" in the winter. Feels like you're dipping them into a pot of boiling water. They also change colors, pale when close to your body temperature, red when warming up, and bluish purple when cold.

I’m glad you talked about caffeine and it’s effects on nervousness. I owned a coffee shop for years in a college town with a very popular medical school. This made me very careful about how much caffeine my regulars consumed. I had a lovely gal come in every day for a 6 shot latte! 6 shots a day was our cut off for everyone, so I would only sell her one of these drinks a day. After some time I asked her to please be honest with me, did she go to any other coffee shops in the town to get her drink? She admitted she went to two or three other shops to buy it every day! Call it barista intuition, but I asked her if she suffered from schizophrenia. She looked totally shocked and began crying telling me how the voices were tormenting her and she was having several panic attacks a day! I asked her to please consider going decaf for a while. Well, I didn’t see this gal for two weeks! When she returned, she looked better than I had ever seen her! The color of her checks was better, her eyes looked better, she wasn’t jittery. She hugged me and began crying. She had quit caffeine cold turkey after our conversation, and wanted me to know the voices were gone! She explained how she suffered for years with the condition and was on all kinds of meds for it but nothing helped. After stopping all caffeine she also tossed out her meds and waited two weeks to see what happened. Her sleep cycle returned, her appetite came back, the scary voices were gone, and she felt human again! I couldn’t believe that in a medical town no doctor spoke with her about her caffeine addiction! It took a barista to straighten her out! So, all you baristas out there, remember, you are selling a drug. It’s a mild and very socially acceptable drug but a drug nonetheless. It’s our responsibility to educate our customers if they are using coffee in a dangerous way. I have wondered how many psychosis patients are actually self inflicted by abusing caffeine? I’ll leave that question for the doctors reading this.

None of what anyone here has mentioned (sweeteners, salt) prevents the stimulation of the bitter taste receptors he mentioned. That's a chemical reaction, not a perception reaction. A great comparison of benefits and setbacks of coffee!! A lot of my medical colleagues need coffee to keep going 😂 But it's such an individual response - I’ve personally stopped as I’m too sensitive to the sympathetic effects (anxiety, palpitations, reflux, insomnia, headaches). Again, everything in moderation - and it’s important to remember the performance enhancing effects like you've mentioned, e.g. helping your focus on a long night’s drive so you don’t have an accident!

Like, if everything else in a person is balanced, no outliers, everything in order, how many lattes would you say is too many lattes for an average person? And how many expressos etc? Coffee seems to be more beneficial than not, but for some people like myself, it’s absolutely addictive, whether it’s the caffeine itself or something else. I’m personally not chasing the caffeine (I don’t think) so much as that warm, cozy feeling of a hot drink and bitter flavor I actually love. I had to wean myself off of 6-7 cups/day before I went to army bct (did NOT want to go cold turkey from that dosage while under high amounts of stress), but I’ve gone straight back to having a 2-3 cups/day now that I’m in my specialty’s schooling environment. It’s one the little things that keeps me motivated throughout the day.

Coffee can be addictive but usually, the thing that makes it addictive is not only the coffein but the behavior and environmental cues. It's like when smokers miss the feeling of having the cigarette in their hand, blowing smoke out, etc. The brain can get hooked on behaviors as well, because the moment you do that "rewarding" behavior, like drinking a hot mug of coffee, it activates your brain similar as other drugs do.

I have to deal with my stomach creating too much acid, too. I can’t drink a regular cup of coffee without paying for it with pain. But I can drink lattes without any issues. I don’t know if it’s the milk or the espresso or both combined, but something with it does not effect my stomach like regular coffee does. I drank/drink my coffee/lattes with just creamer/skim milk,- no flavorings or sugar, not sure if that would impact things. Thanks to this virus, coffee is the last vice I have left, I refuse to give it up. I don’t like how milk ‘waters down’ the flavor of the espresso, but increasing the shots helps that and I’ve mostly adjusted to it now. Straight espresso is too strong unfortunately. Anyway, if you need a possible alternative sometime, maybe this will help.

But yeah, the only time its useful is if im already feeling alert, it will help me to stay alert, but if im already feeling anxious or tired or foggy then it just makes me more anxious which makes everything else worse lol. On a bad day two cups of coffee can throw me in a full on panic attack. Also i have learned that cobsuming caffeine first thing in the morning may spike your stress hormone secretion twofold. Took me 2 weeks to feel normalish but was lethargic for weeks, and wasn't really until the 6 month mark did I feel fully recovered. Now I sleep so much better, digestion is so much better and hydration is much better. All these things plus not having to go and get coffee all the time gave me way more energy then coffee does. Coffee is now part of my daily routine for managing depression. My symptoms are constant fatigue (24/7), hypersomnia, inability to focus or concentrate, low mood and lack of motivation. Coffee helps me a LOT. I didn't discover coffee until a year ago and it helps make my life more manageable. I tried caffeine pills but coffee feels and hits differently. I use the packaged instant coffee now so I can easily monitor how much caffeine Im having per day I have chronic, treatment resistant depression for almost 15 years now and have tools to help myself but lack the motivation to do them. One day, I made the connection and realized that when I DO drink coffee or tea, I am more likely to do the goals I set out for myself. I can actually go for a walk like I said I would. I can take a shower and practice my affirmations. I'm not saying its impossible for me to do these things without caffeine but its much much much more likely that I will practice self care. And I already am on several psychiatric medications for depression and that help somewhat, but not enough. So even coffee tastes awful to me, its the drink that makes it possible for me to almost live a normal life.

I’d love to know some facts about people who seem “immune” to caffeine. I love drinking coffee often, but always with cream/milk and sugar/honey. I order a mocha 3-4 days out of the week. Never straight coffee. People make jokes about me having an addiction or needing my coffee to start the day but that’s not actually the case, I just love the taste of my preferred coffee drinks and it’s more of a psychological comfort drink that helps me start my day in a good mood. It doesn’t wake me up. It doesn’t cause any withdrawal symptoms if I go without it. It does make me poop right away, but that’s really about it, as far as effects I can actually feel and notice. Beyond that, I remember as child always being able to get to sleep just fine even if I’ve had soda close to bedtime, or even directly before bed. I’d love to know more about what’s going on within people who are immune to caffeine.
