The best budget DJ controllers for me right now are the following:
The DDJ-400 for Rekordbox DJ, the DDJ-SB3 for Serato, and the Kontrol S2 Mk3 for Traktor
And all these controllers are all under $300 USD, and each of them gives you the ability to mix, scratch, use effects, and basically everything you may ever want and need from a DJ controller.
But what makes them mostly different from their big brother counterparts like the DDJ-1000, DDJ-SX3, and Control S4 Mk3, besides their build quality and price
Are additional features like: 4 channel faders, better audio output options and the ability to use gimmicky modes like keyboard mode, pitch play mode, and haptic drive mode.
And “all of those features”, come at hefty price. You see most of these controllers cost around $1,000.
And for me, they all just “over provide” from what you really need in DJ gear. But the question in your mind is, are they worth the upgrade? And in my honest opinion.
No they aren’t. These DJ companies are just trying to rip you off.
You have to understand that DJ controllers all really do the same thing.
They play music, and they give you the ability to activate effects, scratch and most importantly, MIX.
You see as a DJ, your output cannot be quantified by what you use. Nobody on the dance floor will care on what equipment you’re rocking.
They’ll just care if you’re giving them an amazing time, with good song selection - And expensive DJ gear, can never improve your ability to read a crowd.
But let’s talk about the positive differences between pro and beginner DJ equipment.
Pro equipment will perhaps make you DJ more comfortably. The faders will be better, the jogwheels will be smoother, and the buttons will be squishier. These factors may lead you to actually be more clean, and precise when you mix.
Perhaps you’ll even enjoy the layout and feel so much, you begin to perform better as well. And that may be a factor on why you may want to upgrade.
But if you’re a cheap ass DJ like me. I would rather master my beginner Dj controller, endure it’s less than pro build quality, and just use it to its fullest potential.
Because I can DJ the exact same way on both unit. The only different will be is how I feel with using the equipment. And “feel” is something I can get used to.
Anyway, beginner DJ equipment has improved so much thru the years, and these Dj companies are just trying to find ways to brain wash you to upgrade.
They want you to think that having the latest and greatest Dj gear will make you the best DJ in the world. Or at least give you the features and ability to.
But the truth is. They won’t. Nothing can ever replace hard work, practice and the special skill the makes DJ’ing so fun and unique.
And that is your ability to select the right songs at the right time.
So ask yourself before upgrading. Do you really need all those new and gimmicky features to be a better DJ, or does your equipment right now,
Already have all the features you need to be a better DJ?

While I MASSIVELY concur to stay cheap as possible for anyone starting out, here's are the counter arguments for spending more as you move forward: 1) In most good clubs, the DJ booth is already fully kitted out, and you are NOT allowed to bring your setup unless you're an absolute star. I've watched countless DJs with cheap controllers just trainwreck hard when they step up to play on CDJs and a mixer, purely because the physical interface changes throw them. They don't move the platters right, or they expect expression pads on the decks which are just NEVER there in the club (Pioneer CDJ / XDJ decks do NOT have pads!). 2) When you go past 2 channels, suddenly having better controls and the ability to see what's going on in 3+ channels at once is VERY important. For this reason, only the most expensive 4-channel controllers are useful here... And again, you WON'T use that in a club, so if you want to go 3-deck, you really need to move away from controllers entirely and get real decks. I don't recommend anyone try start out that way though. 3) If you're a largish guy, cheap controllers are just tiny with less space for your hands. I find using small controller jog wheels VERY fiddly and physically uncomfortable.

In My eye controllers just give You more than CDjs with those pads like 1000 controller for example, is just way easier the only thing that You could be missing out are the screens cause You can do pretty much everything else, also i think in a club system for sure they sound better that's why they use it i think.

I started with Pioneer ergo with a company I was working for. I took the money from a gig and bought a Ddj sb3 worth the intention of upgrading it within the year. I’ve actually grown to like the sb3. I think it’s ironic how I can go do gigs where I make 1000+ dollars with a 250 dollar controller lol. I’ve definitely had my eye on new controllers but also as a mobile Dj I enjoy the fact that the cheaper controllers are just much less liability!

True words Carlo! Nobody cares which DJ gear you have, when you play / mix music. Okay maybe other DJs. But that’s it! I use DDJ SX2, because I love Serato, it’s comfortable to bring it to parties / celebrations and wasn’t that expensive. But in the future I’ll still move to DDJ 1000 SRT, because I want to have that CDJ 1000 / club feeling at my home 😁

Kids today are so lucky to have access to such a selection of great music and technology for so cheap. When I started out, buying anything other than technics was a waste of money. Took me so long to save up for my beloved 1200s. And vinyl was soooo expensive. I could only afford to buy around 6 tracks per MONTH. It’s a different world today and you guys can’t believe how good you have it!

I've taken some dj-classes at dj-school where setup was exclusively of Pioneer decks and mixers. So I bought for learning goals *Pioneer DDJ-400.* It was such a good purchase, because of similarity of my home and school equipment. The controller itself is outstanding thing. On the other hand, I've never used rekordbox before, it is great software, but _as for me_ it is the Number Two after Traktor. That is why my next buy will be *Traktor S2 mk3.* But I really love my DDJ-400 too! It so great that the best dj gears you select are the same -- DDJ-400 and S2 mk3 :-)

I bought the Denon Prime gear because I wanted better gear. No other reason. And you are absolutely right about reading a crowd. That takes experience doing what? Reading a crowd. And the only way you get that is to play to a crowd. I loved working in multiple clubs when I was full time behind the turntables. You were exposed to different crowds and it was rarely boring. I miss those carefree days...

I used Traktor S4 for years. Now I wanted to avoid to carry and look always on a laptop. So now I have a good mixer (Xone 96) and changed to play on a media player (Denon SC5000M). That works really fine for me. The mixer is the heart of the setup and I think my sets will be more accurate when I have trained on the new set up. But of course the most important thing is too have the feeling for the crowd and the killer track in the right moment. Keep up the good work!

Since I’m a mobile DJ and wanted to charge more for wedding and corporate events, I purchased the DDJ1000. Factors were multiple inputs, jog wheels, displays, long pitch faders and better gain control. But I still own my Wego3, and SB2. Solid little controllers that taught me all the fundamentals of djaying. And still learning. Even scratching on an iPad can be done well if you have the skill. Perception is everything but you still need the skills and selecting the right songs for the right crowds to sound good. Love my DDJ1000 but I would still sound like crap 💩 if I didn’t work on my skills.

Carlo, I cannot find one video on KZfaq that says something about the sound quality you get out of different equipment. I know it's very subtle to analyze but I do notice difference in sound quality and intensity between for example CDJs, an SX3 or an Hercules 500. I assume it has to do with the quality of the sound card they are using, there should be a vodeo talking about this important topic. Your content is great.

I bought a XDJ 1000 mk2 and DJM 900NXS2 setup. I used to play on controllers and my last controller I played on was a DDJ-RZX. I know I am crazy from going from a 3kUSD DJ/VJ controller to XDJs. But the most reason why I did that is, lugging around the huge controller was really taking its toll on my back and I was sick of using my laptop to DJ. And I just wanted something more portable and easier to play off of. Plus I like a good bit of the features on the 900NXS2 mixer and the XDJs feel pretty good for what I do

I started with Technics 1200's back in the day when I was just a kid. I had the Numark back then and 808's. I moved upto Xone DX using Traktor. My son recently took over as I had left the DJ scene in the early 2000's. He currently has Traktor Controller S4 along with my 1200 Technics and Vinyl.

I got the DDJ 200 to startup my DJ career and its been a great decission as it had all I needed to learn the basics, but I really want to upgrade to the 400 because of its sound card, the gain knods, effects and overall because it looks fucking badass, but thats about it, I dont really need or want the high end controllers, its more of the same

Also I love what you put your example's for DJ's on its not the hardware its how you use the hardware and you don't need all extra to go hard. Music Selection. How to end on the music. What to play what not to play. What type of style of music you going to play at your next event. Pretty much I always tell up coming DJ's who hit me up. Keep up the work. Funk Up Salute Peace.

You are soooo on point! I learned to Dj on belt drive turntables (cheap) that skipped if you sneezed near them. (1984)When I got my first job at 15 I purchased my first 1200(1985). One year later I purchased my second one.(I was only making $3.25/hr and the 1200’s were about $300 back then) But I noticed that I didn’t become a better Dj just a more comfortable Dj. Fast forward 20 years or so, I am now retired from Giging and Dj only as a hobby and for myself. A family man now with bills, I be dammed if I paid $1000 for any peace of equipment now. My first controller was a Hercules ($240) back in mid 2005 or so. My second one years later was a Numark Mixtrack 3(Black Friday special at $140). The 3 yrs later I purchased a Mixtrack Platinum for $240. I would have been completely happy with that controller but I always missed the tourque and pull of a Tech 1200 with vinyl on it. Since I got rid of my 1200’s years ago, I could not and would not get that “feel”. I was saving my money up to either buy a used Numark ns7 1 or 2, or a brand new Ns7 3. But then Tracktor Kontrol came out with the S4 with Haptic drives for like $900. That was well within my budget and so as a Christmas gift to myself, I bought it and have finally been Komplete! Lol I got the vinyl “tourque feel “ that I’ve been longing for! Now, one per week for like 2-3 hours, I cut it up like I used to back when I was 15 with only one fan listening to my mixes. My dog Khloe(chiwawah). 😊

I bought my reloop controller like 10 years ago for about €400, it has balanced outputs and pretty decent sound quality even on my main HiFi system which is kinda audiphile quality. I don't think any beginner DJ needs just that little bit better quality for double or triple price. You can buy pretty good quality controllers under 4-500€, if you don't want to get into that "Pioneer DJ" hype.

I really like it as a compact road setup and i was over carry a road coffin with turntables. 2 × technic 1210s and a rane 62 mixer with Phase dj. This is my home setup, Has been retired from road uses. Previous mixer with this rig was a rane ttm 57. Main road rig right now is the rane twelves with a rane 72 mixer. I wanted to go back to turntables on the road without the issues of needles. Final rig is a dj2go2 with a keyboard for midi functions. This is a go anywhere system that i can take on holiday in my backpack.

House DJ here! I use CDJs because I like the challenge they represent. I burn my songs to CDJs because if for some reason the USB port,Computer doesn't work, a CD is a great alternative that should work everytime. I noticed with inexpensive CDJs, skipping is quite common. IMO, a mixer isn't that important. An inexpensive mixer is better than having one with a ton of effects on it.

I have the SZ because I upgraded from a simple numark mixer like your original to the SX (high school graduation) and as I started djing at a local club more I got exposed to the whole CDJ set up and I don't have $7,000 to spend so my buddy KC Ray recommended the SZ as it's very similar, and the S9 and reloops I bought because since I was comfortable with CDJ and controllers I decided it was time to learn vinyl and I got to test drive the mixer and the turntables and fell in love with the feel and the creative flow of both

I think any controller past the price of a Numark NVII you might as well go for CDJs so you’re completely comfortable in clubs, and the only reason I recommend Numark NVII (~£600) is because it simulates CDJs as it has onboard screens like CDJs

As a former salesperson in a prominent music store selling dj equipment, he's bang on 100% that you really don't need to spend huge bucks to get a product that will let you spin like a boss..... that being said, i've been a motorized controller snob since the days of the old school CDX from Numark, and still have 4 of them to this day I love the feel so much. Currently my mobile rig is a NS7ii w/3lcd + 2 CDJ1000mk3 and that's all the control I think i'll ever need lol. I haven't seen a single product in years that makes me want to upgrade.

I got something around there but it was $250 it was from a company in Japan call Vestax I had there latest controller was call Typhoon. It help me from my days on DJing online from Live Video Chat Room to Online Radio. Then I upgrade to the last model Vestax VCi-380 which it was up in the $700,00 or $800,00 higher. It still works great and I love it and its a stand alone mixer so If I want to plug in 2 turntables which I am working on getting real soon. Or C D J'S I will too. Keep up the work DJ Carlo. Thanks idol DJ Carlo! For being honest and btw, we had the same exact Behringer BCD2000 DJ controller! Back in 2008, I ordered one from Ebay online and had it shipped to the Philippines. It was fun to control digital mp3 files off the computer coz I was tired of burning cd's and/or mixing VDJ with just the mouse and keyboard. It was heaven-sent for me, as there were only a handful of controllers back in the 2000s, and it was a big thing that some companies came out with these back in the day. There is another model the BCD3000 with an upgraded paint job, so when it came out, I painted my BCD2000's jog wheels and knobs silver just to mimic the look of the 3000. Enjoy man, and we admire your skills!

Well I buy DDJ-RR for a long time Ill do a research and my point to buy this controller is simple. First controller with "professional" outputs. Both output, xlr master, rca, I can even use inputs so I can use external device ( cdj, vinyl.. ). This controller is the cheapest way to get the all features that expensive controller have if you want flexiblity. But its still what you prefer so its only my opinion, if some1 ask me what to buy I just ask some questions you need to answer before you buy maybe your first DJ equipment. But DDJ- RR/SR is good way to get many things for play even in club as I do.

I upgraded from a Traktor S4 to a DDJ-1000. Ran across your videos while learning about some of the features the DDJ-1000 has. Ended up picking up a a DDJ-400 after watching a few of your videos. As the DDJ-200 didn't offer as much functionality as I wanted. The DDJ-800 was a bit overkill. Now I find myself using the DDJ-400 for track prep (Memory/Hot Cues) and practice. When I go to production I use the DDJ-1000.

Thinking better buy new jog wheels. I bought the SZ cause was a good deal. $1300 CAN Dollar. Only down fall it's heavy. I bought a odyssey black laptop/keyboard tray flight case. Made it even heavier lol

I bought an XDJ Aero off a friend... My thoughts about this subject are the same as yours: less is more, you can do pretty much everything you really need for mixing with a decent controller. I still happily gig on my Aero if needed, I'm actually happy with it as it works as a standalone mixer and plays out of an USB stick alone, yet can't have waveforms on its old screen, which I'm OK with, as I saw it as challenge me to sharp my ears and know my tracks better, which I'm the end makes a better dj... I'm happy and proud of having it, even though is old.
