Not to mention the I6 diesels built by International (the DT-466, for example), Buda (used in lots of Allis-Chalmers equipment), John Deere, Volvo, Daimler/Mercedes/Benz, etc. And gasoline I6 engines--Continental, Cummins (yes, they made gasoline I6 engines), Daimler/Mercedes/Benz, BMW, etc.

For real gonna say gotta drive the 4.9 to get it to get it, honestly only showed up to see it. 😂

No offense but Personally I think the 4.9 is way over rated, "TQ monster" nope just a buzzing lazy half dozen, reliability is about it's only shining attribute it has, the power to CI ratio is awful, the 302 Windsor is a way better engine there just as reliable and will eat the 4.9 for breakfast it will out tow and out accelerate a 4.9 at comparable fuel economy being only 3 ci larger? What does that say? It's not an efficient platform. I've had several of both and the 4.9 is a gutless wonder, yeah its reliable but so are many engines from the era that produce considerably more power so why bother...

Personally I hate the old school inline 6 engines, I've always wondered why when they designed the old school ford GM ect inline 6 engines they took all there knowledge of how to make good power and tossed it out the window. Firstly not using a cross flow head.. why? just cram the intake and exhaust manifold together so you get a nice hot intake charge so it has to have very low compression and no timing to avoid detonation. The big terrible flowing skinny log intake manifolds flowed terribly and the combustion chambers were terrible. They were gutless little tractor engines in a pickup, fanboys say it's a truck engine not a race engine, I'm not saying it is a race engine but if you just engineer it with efficiency in mind more power is a nice side effect, you get results that just don't leave power on the table for no good reason, efficiency is just less turning gas into heat and noise. ... Who doesn't want more free power? If GM or Ford built there I6 engines with basically a 6 slug version of their small block head they would have been soooo much better and it would have cost no more to build parts would be more readily available and would have been just as reliable but with a considerable power increase and likely better fuel economy, why would that be bad. As far a packaging an 8.2" deck Windsor V8 is tiny with a low deck height very narrow for a V8 and way shorter front to rear compared to an inline 6. I've seen Windsor and SBC v8s run forever with basic maintenance. Just my opinion. Anybody see the video of a ford 4.9 with a modified LS head or the video of the 4.9 with a modified Cleveland head? They both jam out, now they were both performance builds but it proves my point.

@@95Sn95 your comparing the HO. The 302 in the truck make the same HP and less torque at a higher RPM (the 300 makes 300 ft lbs at 800RPM). The non-roller 302 is junk and had no business in any truck. The 300 beat the 302 in every way in this application, it was just offered for those buyers that "had to have a V8". Show me a 302 that gets 22mpg and has over 500k miles and is all orginal. Both of those are common for a 300. You will be hard pressed to fin a 302 with over 200k before being rebuilt. My 300 is over 600k miles and still has over 150 psi on compression testing.

Some guys are calling the atlas the ameribarra. Those are lesser known and grossly underrated. I believe they are every bit as capable, just dont have the aftermarket following… but some guys are working on it.

I wish the US got the Barra engines. Super reliable, capable, and torquey engines even though they were heavy as tanks

I worked for Argonne National Lab from 05-09. They had Chrysler 225s dating back to the mid 60s still running water and sewage pumps at the time. Most of the hour meters had flipped their 4 digits according to service records.

Don't forget the 5 cylinder version. I imagine it would be even better for turbocharging due to its odd cylinder count.

Same as a 6b Cummins 12v. Find a 4 cylinder version in a old bread or Frito lay truck and some had a gm th-400 trans.

I'm no Ford guy, but as a fleet tech for GoodYear for 9 yrs, I give credit where credit is due. The 4.9s with MPI were gas, oil and go and most of our E250 extended cargo vans hit 330k in constant city traffic with no trouble. When they switched to the 4.2 V6, we were lucky to get 150k before those mills had serious problems.

Chevy 292 is right there with it! In both durability, power, torque, and mod potential..sadly, they are not as well known, and produced in lower numbers(it was not marketed properly when it was in production)...

I had one in my truck with a 3-in straight pipe, guy with a Cummins went Blowing by me at a certain RPM and you couldn't tell his comments from my 6 cylinder Ford. Oh my God it was so sexy! But you're right torqued right out at 2200 RPM and Peak power at like 3500 RPM. Absolute monsters and pretty decent on fuel. Extremely obnoxious with a 3-in straight pipe though not going to lie

I see some of the homebrew turbo setups on here ,giving you a fat lump of like 425-450ft pounds. Must hit like a diesel.

I would love to see a modernized 4.9, with a small turbo, and have it make a flat curve 450 ftlb at about 1800-3000rpm, mated to a heavy duty 6 speed manual transmission.

I can attest to that. I've had 3 vehicles with it & the engine was the only thing that didn't fail

Good power? My neighbor's dad has an F150 with the 300 and it tops out at around 85 MPH. It does alright around town due to the decent low end torque and it is very reliable and easy to work on, but I wouldn't exactly call 145HP out of that large of an engine in such a heavy truck good power when the 302 makes 199HP out of almost the same displacement and seems to get about the same MPG.

@@averyalexander2303 I've owned both the 4.9 and the 5.0. I still have the 5.0 and love it, but I regret every day since I sold the 4.9. Towing there is no comparison, the 4.9 will out-tow the 5.0 all day every day. Yes the 5.0 makes more power, but it has to rev very high to do it. With a 4 speed auto, that only gives you a couple good speeds you can maintain with the right RPM for peak power. The 4.9 is far less reliant on the transmission since it has a much flatter torque curve. MPG is about the same, though I think the 5.0 is capable of better MPG empty. All things considered though, in a truck that's actually used for towing I'd much rather have the 300. 351W would be nice too but the MPG tradeoff isn't worth it to me.

I don't have any experience with the 302 in a truck application, but I have a friend with a 351W powered Bronco and I realize that isn't a direct comparison, but to me, it feels quite a bit stronger than the 300 in the F150 despite the Bronco being heavier. Both get bad gas mileage though. My friend's Bronco averages around 14-15 MPG with a very light foot and electric radiator fan conversion and he regularly sees 12-13 MPG or less if he hits any traffic.

They were dogs 101 hp in a F 150 those things couldnt do 60 and it took 32 seconds to hit 60 mph

Not specifically mentioned was the 361 cubic inch GMC gasoline I6 that powered innumerable GM "deuce and a half" military trucks in World War II. Many thousands of those 361 I6 engines were sold as military surplus after WWII and wound up being used heavily in the civilian equipment market.

Drove a Grand Cherokee for years and I second this. Never had any internal issues with it even after 300k. I swear by it to my dying breath

Ive seen a couple of those 4.0’s go to just under 500,000 miles with nothing but routine maintence. I dont doubt they made it. I just left that shop before i got to see it.

@@jamesfdeanjr7742The torque of a diesel is a good way to describe their off the line torque and lugging power...love them. despite having 8 fewer cubes than the Ford 300(smaller bore), the 292 actually has a longer stroke than the 300, 4.125" as apposed to 3.98" for the 300..if anything, stock to stock, the 292 will out lug a 300....

I've experienced both and they're both great engines, but the 4.0 is way more temperamental than the 300. Both will make stupid high miles but the 300 will make it with nothing but routine maintenance, whereas the 4.0 will have gone through at least one head rebuild by then at a minimum.

Although the 5.9 is a legendary engine, Chrysler does not make Cummins engines. Cummins does

I figure there should have been a best gas i6 list and best diesel i6 list. But as soon as I saw some diesels, Just thought he saving Cummins for last. @@running2redline modern motors can last that long. But most will get a rebuild around 500k-750k. Which is insanely low. But it’s not unheard of for modern motors to make it 1 million miles plus

@@running2redline also with the 60 series when Glider trucks became popular (new trucks or few years old that had emissions equipment to get deleted/engine swapped) a lot of them had a 60 series because those motors were cheap because of many were made compared to Cummins or Caterpillar.

The detroit 60 series are really well built solid reliable engines. We still have a few as pump engines on our barges. I rode a boat that had them for main engines. They live a rough life out here on the water and give us almost zero problems. Speaking of detroit….. 6-71 could have done really well on this list. You absolutly cannot kill those things. It is a shame to see a solid design that has been putting in work since the mid 30’s to current being phased out because of its emissions.

@@frederickjeremy only issue with the 6-71 it’s underpowered and it didn’t get that good of fuel mileage unless it had a load.

Another great I-6 engine that was killed off way too soon and had far too short of production run...I never understood, why they didn't use it as the base full-size truck engine, instead of the 4.3 V6.....

I did one way back but it was actually my first ever tier list so it’s very incomplete. I will likely redo it to include much of the older stuff and adhere to my newer format

Even to just add it (Cummins) to the end of the video as an honorable mention since Detroit diesel is featured. Cummins is an American made i6 so if anything, it deserves to be on this list just as much as the Australians, not to mention its heavy influence in the Ram.

I will say it's a great engine but 4.9 Ford is what I own and it's just as damn good as the 4.0 straight 6 but the 4.0 is just a bit smaller. I've got friends with the 4.0 with over 300k on them just like my 4.9 with over 300k and a 5 speed manual mated to her. Shes my daily driver.
