I wanna mention a few things, Mainly the aquarium thing, Just cause it's common misinformation that I feel needs to be corrected (and just some other things that I feel need correcting) . Keeping them in aquariums should generally be avoided due to the lack of fresh air it provides and the usually low roof. Because of their habit of jumping straight up if they spook at something they can break their neck. While they are ONE of the smallest there are one or two other equally sized species. They also CAN be incredibly cuddly hands on pets when worked with correctly but it works better if you start out with chicks. Lifespan is 5-7, But it depends on genetics and your care. They CAN reach 10+ in some cases. There ARE morphs where the males do not have a bib (my pfp is an example). They also should NOT be dying just because they're on their own. If they do then something is wrong. They also aren't "super" social, In the wild they live in pairs however I agree they should not be kept on their own generally. Super social would be like parrots who live in flocks of several dozen to several hundred in the wild. They can be kept in mesh/wire cages, If they are getting stuck/hurt than the mesh is too big or the bars are too far apart. The only thing is they MUST have a sandbox and or wood ledges if in a mesh floor cage so they have something for their feet to rest/nails be worn down. In the case of the sandbox they can have a tub with a lid and a quail sized hole to prevent mess. Trios are perfectly fine, They usually work quite well. Exceptions if the 3rd is actively being picked on leading to injuries or if being plucked. While bedding can work many kinds are bad for the birds lungs, It's better to use safe sand or soil. (plus sand can be cleaned like cat litter so will last you WAY longer than any bedding). On average they should not need tons of supplemented calcium, If they do then their base diet is not properly formulated. They also shouldn't get sick from getting wet, Mine will literally bathe in the finches bathing dish (Although yes babies should have marbles but it's best just to get a quail chick waterer in the first place). Fake plants are nice but not an absolute requirement and some can be unsafe. Fighting the female is usually just a territorial/dominance thing which is why flocks need a bit of monitering as some males are aggressive towards females who aren't their mate. This guide covers all basic info and I highly suggest reading it (especially if you're in the comments thinking about them as pets.) www.backyardchickens.com/articles/button-quail-care-guide.77178/

I’m thinking a cage like a reptibreeze would work well, or if you have to go with a glass tank for whatever reason, getting an exo terra or zoomed one with ventilation is just fine for air circulation. I’ve kept chameleons (which I would think are even more sensitive than quail) in them with no problem. If you wanna be extra careful you can either get an air pump for a fish tank and run the tube to the bottom so there’s always airflow through the ventilation. Or you can also get a computer fan and place it on the top screen to help pull air out. I did both at the same time just to make sure it was properly ventilated. Also the screen lids have enough give (they’re more like mesh attached to a plastic frame, not a straight up metal mesh) that I think they would be ok if they hit it, though they come in really big sizes so that might not be an issue all together if you get one that’s tall enough.
@jlexoticbirds4134
@jlexoticbirds4134 2 жыл бұрын
@@snakesonaframe2668 Another issue is that birds do not comprehend glass, so that just adds to the stress. If it’s an absolute emergency that is one thing, but in general it is not worth it to use glass enclosures.

@@jlexoticbirds4134 Im not spreading misinformation yes glass tanks are probably not the best option but they are still an option. However wire bottom cages are not good at all it hurts and damages the birds feet and prevents them from doing natural behaviors that they love and it is cold and uncomfortable for them. Many quail owners (especially coturnix quail owners) think it is ok to keep them in wire floored cages but it is just cruel

@@chickensquailandbirds5650 Mesh cages are perfectly fine if they have places to rest their feet such as a dust bath and things to climb. I'm a die-hard animal lover and I've dedicated all my time to the three little babies that I have hatched. since you seem to love and adore your Quails 100x more than the farmers Ive seen raising quail on youtube, I thought you would be the best person to ask when it comes to giving the babies the best nutritional diet. would the babies eat the crickets and meal worms too? what are some other great protein and calcium packed foods? or would you just stick to the ground up game bird crumble? once again THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! i can see you love your Quails very very much! :)

Excellent video and very informative. Congrats on your little female brooding her own eggs. I've only seen one other person so far here on KZfaq who has been able to create a comfortable enough environment for quail to raise their own eggs. It seems to be a matter of recreating a more natural habitat. Such as the plants and a more natural substrate. So that they are happy and feel like it is safe enough to hatch chicks. The average male to female ratio that the majority of breeders are suggesting is 1 male for up to 5 females, depending on the number of quail someone wants. I personally was looking at quail for eggs and meat as opposed to having chickens because of the rapid growth rate of the Coturnix Quail. The eggs nutritionally are far superior to the egg of a chicken. I'd imagine there are people in your area who would love to buy the unfertilized eggs. ;)

Late comments, but I have a couple o' questions: 1. Are quails recommended to be kept in pairs? Are they social to the point where they need another quail or they get depressed like rabbits do? 2. Would it be okay to keep my quail in my room? I'm afraid of them getting scared and jumping when I make sudden movements while I'm sleeping/come back home. 3. Do they need constant light or is it going dark okay once in awhile? 4. Since I'm busy with school, etc. am I able to leave them for a long time (about 8 hours) alone? Sorry for the boat load of questions, but I just need to make sure I can handle taking care of the little o's.

Hello there! 1. Quails should never everrrr be kept alone like ever lol. They need a conpanion at all times! If you have one be ready to make everyone in your house go crazy because they will crow no stop, morning, noon, in the middle of the night etc and there crows are pretty loud for a tiny bird. 2. You can keep them in your room, just make sure your tank has a lid so if they get scared and fly they wont get out. They can get lost pretty quickly since they are so small. 3. They should have light during the day and total darkness at night. 4. Yes they can be left alone, just make the food, water is changed every day etc etc and make sure the two quails you selected get along well because if they get into fights while your gone you might come home to a died/dying quail. I recommend watching my whole video as I go into much details on all these topics. (:

Hi, my name is Julie I live in Melbourne Australia. I have button quails in my aviary. I love them. Today six out of 20 hatched nice healthy little quails. There was one that seemed to be stuck in it's shell. I left it for an hour the mother was sitting beside it. When I went back the sweet little thing was very cold it could not walk just lay there with it's eyes closed. I now have it inside I have been trying to feed it egg meal with a syringe, it has been taking little sips. It's 1am here I have fed it all through the day to keep it hydrated. I'm having a problem keeping it warm I don't have a brooder, I have a warm water bottle inside a box a towel over the water bottle and another one lightly over the chick. I noticed it has started to move but can't walk yet. Any tips Cheers Julie

How do you add a quail to another when starting? I mean, do you have to let them get used to each other or just whoosh, put them into a tank and see if they like each other? Are there fights between new quails when they're the first quails to be living in the tank (as in you're making a new group and not have one already and just adding new quail to it)?
@BrighterDaysAviary
@BrighterDaysAviary 6 жыл бұрын
One way to do it is to put the quails together at night when its dark so they don't see each other but still hear each other, then in the morning when they do see each other they may think the new quail has been their all along. Just make sure you watch them of course for the rest of the day to make sure there are no fights.

The better ratio for these birds is either 3 females to a male or 2 females to a male. More than 3 females you need to add another male. Ive had 2 females to a male in a 20 gallon and they did fine. But now I’ve upgraded them to a 40 breeder. The higher protein is good when they are young. But once they become adults and start to lay eggs then you can lower the protein to around 16% to 19% but make sure the calcium is higher. I use a chicken layer crumble. Since that food has higher calcium in it already for the eggs I don’t always have to offer oyster shells. But I do on occasion to help them keep their beaks filed down. Otherwise I sometimes have to trim the beaks.

Hi, I’m looking into getting two quails, my house is around 3,000-3,500 sq ft. Is that large enough for two quails? Also, have any tips on where to get button quail chicks? Like at a pet store? Or a professional breeder? Any advice would mean a lot, thanks. Also, is clipping their wings so they can’t fly a good option? My parents don’t want them to fly so just asking, also how do you manage the poop/pee? Also, don’t worry about space, we have a tank that’s about 4 feet long and about 2 feet wide. It’s about 60 gallons. Also, how much calcium (crushed oyster shells) should I put in at once? (Im getting a male and a female) Also how do I know if an egg is fertile? I really don’t feel comfortable with accidentally cooking a potential quail. Also how much food should I give them and how frequently? Also how frequently should I clean the tank? Also when I do clean the tank, should I throw out the bedding? Also, sorry about so many questions.
@BrighterDaysAviary
@BrighterDaysAviary 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Most of the questions that you asked I have answered in my video(: but for the others; I don’t recommend you clip their wings. You should put a netlike meshing over the top to keep then from escaping. You can tell if an egg is fertile by the candling method. I would give them as much food as they would eat. Just make sure you don’t underfeed them!

Fish tanks really are not the best option for quail. There isnt much ventilation, it can stress them out, and it is hard to clean. Fish tanks are for fish not birds. I would recommend a large guinea pig cage and you could add some hiding sopts and pine shavings at the bottom. Also buttons dont really fight to the death I currently have 4 males together and they just chase each other sometimes for like 1 minute but most of the time they are fine I guess it depends on the quail and how much space they have.

They can only live with tiels in an Aviary setting, Otherwise the quail are likely to get hurt. Tiels can also not have seed as a diet staple, It's too high fat. The tiels need pellets and fresh veggies. Quail can have seed but they also can get overweight from it so they should get gamebird or hen layer feed.
