A clip from the movie Fight Club where Tyler Durden becomes the world's best motivational coach for Ramond K. Hessel.
en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Fight_C...)
Narrator: Let me tell you a little bit about Tyler Durden. Tyler was a night person. While the rest of us were sleeping, he worked. He had one part time job as a projectionist. See, a movie doesn't come all on one big reel. It comes on a few. So someone has to be there to switch the projectors at the exact moment that one reel ends and the next one begins. If you look for it, you can see these little dots come into the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
[In the background, Tyler points to the corner of the screen as one such mark briefly appears.]
Tyler Durden: In the industry, we call them cigarette burns.
Narrator: That's the cue for a changeover. He flips the projectors, the movie keeps right on going, and nobody in the audience has any idea.
Tyler Durden: And why would anyone want this shit job?
Narrator: Because it affords him other interesting opportunities.
Tyler Durden: Like splicing single frames of pornography into family films.
Narrator: So when the snooty cat and the courageous dog with the celebrity voices meet for the first time in reel three, that's when you'll catch a flash of Tyler's contribution to the film.
[As the audience is watching the film, pornography flashes for a split second]
Narrator: Nobody knows that they saw it, but they did.
Tyler Durden: A nice, big cock …
[Several audience members look rattled, a little girl cries]
Narrator: Even a hummingbird couldn't catch Tyler at work.
Tyler Durden: We're consumers. We are by-products of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don't concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy's name on my underwear. Rogaine, Viagra, Olestra.
Narrator: Martha Stewart.
Tyler Durden: Fuck Martha Stewart. Martha's polishing the brass on the Titanic. It's all going down, man. So fuck off with your sofa units and Strinne green stripe patterns.
[Tyler and Narrator stop outside a convenience store at night. Tyler takes out a gun and walks into the store to do their homework assignment of a "human sacrifice", while Narrator protests. Tyler forces the clerk out the back exit at gun point.]
Voice-over: On a long enough timeline the survival rate for everybody drops to zero.
Narrator: Stop! What are we doing? Come on! God!
Tyler Durden: Hands behind your back. Give me your wallet.
[The clerk, now kneeling, hands him his wallet.]
Tyler Durden: Raymond K. Hessel. 1320 South East spanning apartment A. Small cramped basement apartment, Raymond?
Raymond K. Hessel: How did you know?
Tyler Durden: 'Cause they give shitty basement apartments letters instead of numbers. Raymond, you are going to die.
[Raymond begins to cry. Tyler examines content of the wallet.]
Tyler Durden: Is that your mom and dad? Mom and Dad are going to have to call up kindly Doctor So-and-so. Pick up your dental records. Wanna know why? Because there's gonna be nothing left of your face.
Narrator: Oh come on, come on.
Tyler Durden: An expired community college student ID. What did you study, Raymond?
Raymond K. Hessel: S-stuff.
Tyler Durden: Stuff? Were the mid-terms hard? I asked you what you studied!
Raymond K. Hessel: Biology mostly.
Tyler Durden: Why?
Raymond K. Hessel: I don't know.
Tyler Durden: What did you wanna be, Raymond K. Hessel? The question, Raymond! Was "What did you want to be"?!
Narrator: Answer him, Raymond! Jesus!
Raymond K. Hessel: Veterinarian, veterinarian.
Tyler Durden: Animals.
Raymond K. Hessel: Yeah animals and stuff.
Tyler Durden: And stuff, yeah I got that. That means you have to get more schooling.
Raymond K. Hessel: Too much school.
Tyler Durden: Would you rather be dead? Would you rather die? Here, on your knees in the back of a convenience store?
Raymond K. Hessel: No, please no!
[Tyler takes his gun down, takes out Raymond's driver's license throwing the wallet in front of Raymond.]
Tyler Durden: I'm keeping your license. I'm gonna check in on you. I know where you live. If you're not on your way to becoming a veterinarian in six weeks, you will be dead. Now run on home.
[Raymond gets up and runs into the night.]
Tyler Durden: Run Forrest, run!
Narrator: I feel ill.
Tyler Durden: Imagine how he feels.
Narrator: Come on, this isn't funny! That wasn't funny. What the fuck was the point of that?!
Tyler Durden: Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Raymond K. Hessel's life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you and I have ever tasted.
Voice-over: You had to give it to him. He had a plan. And it started to make sense in a Tyler sort of way. No fear, no distractions. The ability to let that which does not matter truly slide.
[Tyler throws gun to Narrator who opens the barrel to find no bullets inside.]

its funny how underneath the violence and nihilism, the movie has a wholesome objective of getting people to pursue their dreams and not be slaves to mediocrity

Reach for the stars, kids! One day you too could be the leader of a cult-like performace art terrorist cell!. Also, was the narrator ever truly mediocre? I think he was extremely jaded due to nature of his extremely cynical job, a job he was very good at. Also he had dissociative personality. Dunno if you can really judge that as being mediocre ir not... I guess in terms of sanity?

@@guyshafor1320 you know well that’s not what the op comment meant when he said not be slaves to mediocrity , he meant it in a way of limiting thought to what one could be , thinking that you cannot be a singer because you don’t have the perfect voice , not realising that some singers started off not having the voice you are hearing but practiced for it and ending up in a desk job that didn’t sastify him and think back a couple decades regret for not taking the risk and realise the fact. That's been my plan my entire life. I've been helping people when opportunities present themselves, but my goal is to change the whole world. I want to get people to pull their heads out of their asses and realize there are other people around them all the time and their actions have consequences on those around them. I want to get everyone to realize that regardless of what the news and TV tries to tell us, us middle and lower class folk are ALL IN THE SAME BOAT! I can't stand that people are so gullible that they actually listen to this bullshit propaganda that says we are all different and especially to get people to realize that the Super rich that run the world don't give any more of a shit about me just because I'm white as they do anyone else who isn't super rich. The people who run the world (also known as the Bilderberg Group) only care about one color, green. That's it. Now, if the 150-250 people who have hundreds of billions if not trillions of dollars, the 7+ billion people they are trying to control and keep in their place, the best way for them to go about it isn't to wage a war on us. The best way yo keep all of us down is to convince people they are free and use the news (which they own ALL of the major TV and news networks) and advertising to spread greed, hate, fear, contempt, anger, arrogance, misery, racism, rage, alcoholism, drug addiction, skepticism, mistrust and any number of other negative shit amongst those 7 billion people and convince them that some people are better than others based on shit that has no bearing on anything and sit back and let us kill ourselves off for them. They own everything! The don't care about me anymore than anyone else, but they want people to think they do, they show story after story of a white police officer killing a black person like its the only scenario where a police officer kills someone and shove that shit down peoples throats to the point where a guy who is going for a gun to shoot the police gets shot and everyone is in an uproar over it. Now in not sayin all killings in that manor are justifiable or fair. However, if I were to be stopped by the police and I didn't listen to shit they said and I stormed back to my car and reach under the seat, whether I had a gun or not, I'd expect them to shoot me. The thing that kills me is that I also hear stories about little kids who get shot and killed during a driveby, they show it for a few seconds on TV and that's it and no one seems to give a shit about the little kids dying, but a grown man on hard drugs who grabs a gun or a knife and attempts to kill police officers, that's uncalled for but yo hell with the little kids who get shot pointlessly. What kind of a fuckin sick fuckin world do we live in? You know how many white police officers shoot and kill other white people, how many black police officers shoot and kill white people and black police officers shoot and kill other black people? It happens every fuckin day but based on the news you'd think the only time there is a police shooting is when a white officer killing a black person. Just because they don't shot the other 3 scenarios doesn't mean they don't happen, it just doesn't stir shit up so they don't show it they also don't show it becthey want people to think that us broke white folk get some supposed privilege that non white people do not get. Not sure why people think that. I've never gotten a free thing in my whole fuckin life. Never got welfare, had to pay full price for my college degree, never had shit given to me because I'm white. Not once ever. Shit, twice in my lie I couldn't even get unemployment just to py my bills and I pay into unemployment every paycheck! The only time being white has ever even possibly helped me in any way shape or form is when I get pulled over. At the same time, when I get pulled over, I pull off the road so they don't have to get out into traffic, I immediately put my car in park, turn it off, roll down my window and keep my hands on the wheel. If it's night time, I even turn on my dome light so they can see what I'm doing as they come up on me. I say yes sir, nor sir, thank you sir so yeah I like my chances with the police. However, they have everyone convinced that I'm somehow better than others bec3of my skin color which is complete bullshit. Yet everyone falls for it all the time. Best way to control billions of people is to divide and conquer. That's what they do. They keep us as divided as fucking possible because by doing so, they guarantee that we will never put aside these bullshit so called "differences" and actually work together to make positive change in our lives. They've been running the world since at least 1954. They just make everyone only care about themselves and not give a shit about anyone else. It works fucking perfectly for them. Meanwhile they sit back and constantly drop the quality of any products they sell while they continue to raise prices and gouge us every fucking chance they get so we work our asses off for barely any money while they rape our wallets and bank accounts and do just enough to keep people going back to work building their infrastructure and make trillions of dollars off of us. Someone needs to be the one to spread this information and since I've been waiting around for 40 years now and no one else is doing it so I'm taking it upon myself. If we al worked together, they'd be fucked. They know that. That's why they keep us hating one another so it'll never happen. Members of the Bilderberg Group include the guy who owns Amazon, the guy who owns Google, the guy who owns BP (not a committee I mean the top one guy), owners of all news and TV networks including Ted Turner, Bush Sr, Bush Jr, Bill AND Hillary Clinton, Obama, John Kerry, Biden and many other presidents and presidential candidates, owners of weapons manufacturers, owners of pharmaceutical companies, royalty from all over the world, leaders of other countries like Tony Blair and a shit load more super rich and powerful people. They meet once a year behind closed doors and EVERYTHING is off the record. They are responsible for the formation of the European Union, the Euro (which is the 7th most valuable paper currency, the US dollar is number 9), the oil crisis of the 70's and many other things we'll never even know about. That's some scary shit. We have got to out our differences aside and work TOGETHER. My life goal is to make that happen.

Of course you shouldn't threaten someone with a gun to motivate someone. But there is a lesson to be learned here. The best way to remind ourselves of what truly matters in our lives is to be reminded of our mortality and how swiftly our life can get taken away.

The fact that many people need a gun to their head to chase their dreams says a lot about our mind. You know what you need to do, you understand why you need to do it and you feel like a failure for not going after it. Even so, you are paralyzed and prefer to suffer with regret. We are complex creatures.

The thing I love about this film is the logic actually make sense. Obviously the way they are doing acts of terrorism is wrong. Like making this poor guy thinking he's going to die. Does any one watching this the second time think for Raymond how crazy it was to hear a guy asking you questions with a gun to your head while at the same time hearing him argue with himself on how it’s not funny? Or when he’s driving the car before they crash it and is arguing with himself with the 2 guys in the back and they see him mad that he doesn’t include HIMSELF in on what’s going on with project mayhem?
@mind4lease554
@mind4lease554 2 жыл бұрын
That's something I think about every time I rewatch it. That car scene is crazy to think about when you know what's going on. The two guys in the back seat HAVE to know their leader is insane but have the faith to follow him anyway. The way they don't hesitate to answer but look at themselves while Tyler and Jack are arguing is pure gold.
