I am bicycle mechanic on my own, and I have Peugot from 85 and with full golden arrow group set. And I can tell one thing. Servicing Old school bicycles is really nice thing to do. It's like restoring some artwork from old days.

Please don't use copper anti-seize on stainless steel threads or fasteners as it contributes to solder embrittlement or inter-crystaline of the thread flanks. Best to use non-metallic (boron nitride) or nickle.

Hi, thank you for your videos, they are so good and helpful. I'm thinking of rebuilding my STI 5600 10 speed shifter, because no matter what I do (adjusting, changing cables and housings, adjusting rd hanger, changing jockey wheels on rd, changing chain and cassette), fourth and fifth gears are not changing correctly. Can STI shifter worn out? Can I put disassembled STI shifter parts to ultrasonic cleaner? And what lubricate to use when assembling STI shifter? Thank you.

Using copper slip on steel on steel contact points shouldn't be an issue. Aluminium and copper on the other hand is a big no-no - Aluminium will deteriorate. See galvanic corrosion. Copper slip is used in places where you need a lot of heat resistance, i.e. there is no reason to use it on a bicycle. Use ceramic/ptfe grease and have zero worries about galvanic corrosion.

Copper slip is a poor choice on Aluminium. Better to use a ceramic antiseize to avoid electrolytic problems if you must, but to be honest normal grease works fine. With you on the Shimano grease, its good stuff. Mobil xhp 222 blue grease is also pretty good ans a bit thicker than the Shimano, good for winter bike hubs etc. Have you considered using a proper parts cleaner on parts? There are even some bench top ones around. That would give you pumped circulating cleaner through a nice brush all contained in a unit.

I always favour cooper grease on sealed bearings in a carbon cup & through experience we get a feel for what can and can’t go in the degreaser, we have more than one cleaner and will use one with a regular soap based cleaner too.

Another fantastic video - Quick question... is the detergent in the ultrasonic cleaner used only once or can you keep it in for multiple bikes/components?
@Bikespeeds
@Bikespeeds 2 жыл бұрын
You can use it many many times over though it should be changed and cleaned out regularly enough, otherwise you end up with a silt that just sits in the cleaner, you’ll get to the stage when you know it’s time to wash out

Hello Lee I've learned masses from your videos. Big thanks. My Specialized Dolce isn't quite right so I'm about to attempt her headset service. I think the bearings are sealed. Just rewatched a couple of your videos which included headset service but the bearings aren't sealed. Do you still use Shimano Premium grease for a headset with sealed bearings? Or another grease? I realise you're very busy and may not have time to reply. Thank you TE

i get confused about chain lubes when to use wet or dry , how much lube on a chain, how often to lube etc seems to be many opinions that contradict each other, what do bikespeeds recommend
@Bikespeeds
@Bikespeeds Жыл бұрын
It can be over complicated… wet lube always works, dry lube can work if you’re keen on maintaining it. The routine of how often/ when is personal preference. What you want to advice is building up a paste. Dry lube is better for that but if you clean a wet chain when needed it’ll work just as well for you⚙️

I’ve used the green oil chain lube, seems to work as well as other brands I used in the past, works well through the winter, and smells nice as well sort of aniseedy. The grease didn’t seem to work or last that well, I swapped back to cheap marine grease bought off ebay when the tube was empty.

Stainless steel with copper anti seize aint match or just ok?
@aitorbleda8267
@aitorbleda8267 Жыл бұрын
It is ok, but unless you use good one better to use ceramic or nickel based one. If heat separates the grease then you might have issues, that will not happen on a bike, generally

would you use copper slip on a cassette to a free hub ?

Your copper based grease is the WORST thing you can use on a bicycle! It is intended for high-temperature applications like in combustion engines. Copper and aluminum don't mix. Your copper based grease will greatly increase the electrochemical contact corrosion with aluminium. Why don't you use standard titanium based montage paste like endless other bike shops?
