Thorough! I didn't expect the tips for resin or metal! (I avoid finecast, but it's great you guys included it for people who might have those.) The tips for gaps and mold lines are so important, especially if you're dry brushing or using washes of any kind. It sucks to have to fight against these things in the painting step when just a little extra time spent in the cleaning and assembly would have saved you that headache.

Just admit it, Cal, this whole video was used as a pretext for your personal crusade to get everyone to wash their sprues 😉 But honestly I have noticed a difference as I use brush on primer. Without washing them it will smear and take multiple coats and then flake off more easily if I'm a little rough during painting. Much less of a hassle after a quick wash so we're on the same team here. Oddly enough other industries like record pressing also deny using release agents, but even if they don't I suspect something tends to build up on the product that idealy should be removed. I don't know if they're embarrassed about it or the employees are doing it in secret or what the reason is.

I just use a dishwasher soap to wash models. As all those mold releases are like fatty oily based liquids, you just need alcali to neutralize it, and thats soap :) so i usually dissolve some of the dish washer in a plugged up sink, brush some with an old toothbrush and all good. PS I dont trust GW too, also it depends on the minis generation. For example, the leviathan box had newer type of models with almost non-existent mold lines, stab-in assembly. Those are pretty clean. If you take older models, like Tiranid warriors, for example, sometimes you can even see grime on em (not always, per my experience - 1box out of 3 :) )

If memory serves, when we shot inside the injection mould area of the factory, the machinery doused the sprues as they exit the mould. I do remember there being a lot of water lol, so not sure there's any need at all to be washing the plastic sprues... 🙂

Good video overall. I would like to add one point. Do not use a dull knife. The extra pressure needed to cut will make accidents more likely and lead to sloppy cutting. A sharp blade is much easier and safer to use.

I use dish soap for models, and it takes, exactly, forever for them to dry. Which is frustrating since usually I wash them because I really want to paint them. Any suggestions?

Always wash everything. There's no reason not to, and you never know if it'll maka a difference, no matter what you're told about the material or the production process. I look forward to the april 1st reshoot, where your hands get progressively more bloody the more sprue you've cut up

Mould release is an agent commonly used in plastic factories, its essential a grease and though thin that remains on models. This means that your paint is less likely to stick to the model. This is easiest to see in brush priming where paint won't stick to the model. I hope that explanation helps - Cal
