When your Hayward Navigator or PoolVac stops working, the usual suspect is the A-Frame and Turbine and in the newer V-Flex Models the bearings in the V-Flex Turbine. There are actually many variations of the Hayward cleaner with the same internal parts; Navigator V-Flex, Navigator Pro, PoolVac V-Flex, Pool Vac XL, Pool Vac Classic, Hayward Blu, Penguin AquaBug, Wanda the Whale along with the older Navigator and PoolVac Models.
The telltale sign that the part is not working correctly is that you will see the cleaner just sitting on the bottom not moving. If you lift it off the pool surface you may see the pods moving back and forth, but when you put it back down, it just sits there like a rock. Typically that is the A-Frame/Turbine or the V-flex turbine depending on your vacuum model. The parts are relatively inexpensive and the part swap is relatively easy to do.
Here is the typical kit I recommend for any of these above vacuums except the V-Flex Models. This will get your cleaner moving again in no time and it is relatively easy to install.

If you have a V-flex cleaner it is even easier to repair. All you would need to do is remove the bottom and cover and drop in a new V-Flex Turbine with bearings. No real disassembly needed. This is the kit you will need for that repair.

If you have an older cleaner and want to upgrade it to the V-Flex Turbine they sell two different kits. Why would you consider upgrading to the V-flex Turbine? The best reason is that it is a superior turbine in that it will “flex” and let larger debris into the cleaner. It is also an easier part to replace going forward since you just need to remove the old one and drop in a new one without disassembling the entire cleaner. All you need to do it open the bottom and remove the top.

You're the only one I've seen to point out that the bearings on either side of the turbine need to be rotated so it falls into those groves. I just put them in & closed it up & couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. It was driving me crazy! Even my pool guy couldn't figure it out. Thanks for the assist!

Excellent step by step explanation on both video and audio. I've used my old Hayward Ultra since I put in the pool 15 years ago and just replaced the rockers and pads recently. Your tip on soaking the rubber shoes in water sure helped. Very helpful.

Works for me. thank you! A couple notes for others... pay attn to how that orange/red disc on top of the gear box is aligned before you piece it all back together. I have NO idea what that is for, and nothing inside moves it.. I dunno. Seems to have no function, but it's there! ALSO.. I wasn't going to replace my turbine because I could easily spin it with my finger and I'm SO glad I decided to do it anyway. One of the bearings literally fell apart in my hand when I opened the case. So, two new bearings, propeller and even replaced the pods and pod feet. One issue I had is it kept getting stuck in the pool and I discovered that the suction was just too much. So like with my old one I just removed the two "wings" and BINGO... It still sucks (well, doesn't suck? ;-) ) , cleans well and is now crawling walls. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO! :-) - Dan B , Carlsbad CA

Im so glad I found your video I have the one that has the white wheel. Im glad I didn't get the black wheel one. Thank you I replace the shoe pads but still doesn't move. The one piece that I was trying to change is the wheel thats about 2 to 3 inches wide and in order to change the other wheels you have to go to the last cover which it is hard I remove the tiny screw but it still won't come off is there a replacement for the outer body of pool vac plus this turbine dont know exactly what it is called.

Thanks for the video, I have one too, stopped working, opened it up and it's one of the bearings from the A frame wheels. I can see they are cheap in the US, but here in Europe they charge a lot for them, from 75-100 euros for the replacement kit. Nevertheless, I will have to buy one and repair it.

Really well made video. It is quick and the person narrating it isn't too verbose. My only suggestion would be add information about the gear box. I am looking for information about how easily the gears are supposed to spin.

Hi David, I am going to take my old Navigator apart (again) and check that all parts that spin are doing so. It still does not turn away from the corner step in the pool. If you/I hold the navigator by the hose (say it's submerged 2 feet into the pool water) with suction on, should you see it spin/turn or not? Mine does not, when I test it like that. Do you think the great big top most gear is shot? It looked fine but I did not actually measure it. In open water it moves and turns fine. THANKS! Froggy

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I have been trying to figure out why my cleaner does not move. Is there only 1 upgrade kit, or is it unit specific. My cleaner ALWAYS gets stuck on the steps. Is there something I should look at to fix this? On the pool deck with no water inside, it will spin just fine. In the pool, it does not. Thank you.

Can you just replace the bearings or do you have to replace the entire turbine?

I have the Hayward Pool Vac XL pool vacuum. It works fine while the pool pump is running but as soon as the pump shuts off the pool vac will float to the surface. I have a dedicated line with three way valve for skimmer, and I do have it adjusted to give the vacuum sufficient suction to do the job. I also use a sand filter and I have backwashed it recently. Do you know why or what would cause it to float to surface?
