Great job on this video. I have lived in Cole Valley and currently the Inner Richmond. As someone who has never had a car, I enjoyed how you covered the public transit in each neighborhood. It is clear you have explored many of the neighborhoods in SF. I know some people who only live and work downtown and feel like they miss out on so much of the city.

Hi! I live and grew up in the sunset. :) one little thing you didn’t get (but most people don’t so it’s perfectly fine) is that the sunset is actually divided into three parts: inner sunset, which ends at 19th avenue, central sunset, which goes from 19th to Sunset blvd, and outer sunset, which is from Sunset blvd to the beach. The Richmond is similar, having a central Richmond neighbourhood, which starts at park presidio and ends at 32nd avenue. Most of the Asian culture that you see in the sunset tends to be in the central sunset. Inner is now more transplants and Outer is usually families who have been in the city for multiple generations. I grew up with a bunch of them, so I can attest. Also, some history for you since I’m an SF native: the Irish and the Russian immigrants came out here and kinda “settled” it. Back in the days of big Irish population here, the San Francisco faction of the Irish mob was headquartered in the sunset. Russians also had headquarters here, but a lot of business moved into the Richmond district neighbourhood of Little Russia, which spans 17th to 27th avenue, and from Clement to Anza St. Kinda funny that I’m talking about Irish and Russian population in the avenues, since I’m half Irish and half Russian Jewish. Great video! I’m glad my hometown treated you well while you were here. :)

As a 43 year resident myself, I'd have to add the Parkside - which is commonly thought of as part of the Sunset, but in reality had long had its own elementary school (now Dianne Feinstein Elementary), its own movie palace - the late great Parkside Theatre on Taraval, its own playground (Parkside Square) and of course its own SFPD precinct. By contrast, if you grew up within the boundaries of what most natives regard as the Sunset - including my wife - you were much more apt to patronize the (also long gone) Surf Theatre, Polly Ann Ice Cream, Noriega Produce and the 'Hippie Store' - AKA Other Avenues Grocery on Judah. And as a kid, you probably shot hoops at - you guessed it - Sunset Rec.

I have gotten some criticism lately on this video about my mentioning of different racial demographics and I wanted to address it because it saddens me that people are calling me a racist when I am not. I had mentioned racial and nationality demographics because I know that can matter for some demographics to live in a neighborhood where they are surrounded with people who look like them and can also relate to each other. My goal was to try to prevent gentrification even more because it hurts communities and it seems that I didn’t address that in my video. I made the mistake of assuming people would know what I meant and I was wrong. I really am sorry for not giving context in the video as I failed to do that. I appreciate anyone who addressed their concerns with me about this. The last thing I ever want to do is to upset people 🥺
@blvckvv999

There is nothing wrong with pointing out the racial make up of certain neighborhoods. I am sorry a bunch of lunatics piled on you accusing you of racism in bad faith. Not even a hint of racism in this video, you didn't embrace any negative stereotypes about certain groups in these neighborhoods, nothing. So I don't understand the problem. This video is the best I have seen on KZfaq yet of anyone doing a neighborhood breakdown of the city. Great job!

Relocating to SF from LA. I visit SF frequently and as a visitor love North Beach along with Cow Hollow / Marina. These are ideally my spots, but noticed you can definitely get more bang for your buck in SOMA. I love to walk and concerned SOMA might be a bit out of range from where I normally like to hang out. Curious what others think. Would I feel "isolated" in SOMA and having to Lyft everywhere? Not terribly concerned about work commute, but will be working in the area of Folsom and 11th.

I really liked your video. I lived in SF many years ago, (very briefly, less than a year), and stayed accross the street from Lake Merced, near SF State. I remember it was very close to the ocean. I'm guessing the area could be considered the outer Sunset, but I'm not sure, because it's not mentioned much on the youtube videos about SF that I have seen. I used to go to the Sunset, near Golden Gate Park often, and really liked that area. I was just wondering what kind of neighborhood Lake Merced is now? I worked downtown, and didn't have a car at the time, and I used to take a bus to a tunnel, (I think they called it the West Portal), where a streetcar went through the tunnel, and ended up on Market St. Downtown. This was many years ago. I imagine it's probably changed considerabaly over the years.

I find it interesting hearing transplants (I am assuming you're not from SF) give their perception of the city. Nice video and you're spot on about North Beach. It's the best imo as well. and nobody calls it Little Italy except euphemistically; the name of the neighborhood is North Beach and nothing else..You missed a few neighborhoods/districts that I would mention. Bernal Heights is a great neighborhood especially around Precita Park. The Mission: you mentioned outer Mission and Excelsior but the The Mission should be mentioned as a good neighborhood, also the Dolores Park area is cool. Castro? . Also Mission Bay and Dog Patch are worth mentioning. Potrero Hill. Around North Beach is Chinatown and Jackson Square both very livable and fun neighborhoods. Also FiDi around embarcadero has some good living spots. I would also add Soma especially the areas around Rincon Hill and the area the developers are calling the the "East Cut".( I hate that name but it's what they are trying to call it). Also, I'm going to add that the Tenderloin is a great neighborhood but you gotta know where to stay away and not go. cheers!

Saw a KZfaq video just the other day of a guy working at a store right up the street from where I was that shows him getting half the life beaten out of him inside the store. I also saw video where two guys tried to rip a purse out of a woman's arms and then attempted to hijack her car, and YES, it was at the exact place I had worked at! Yes, I lived in the inner sunset for nearly 2 decades, 4th and Irving, tram right outside, UCSF hospital right there, jump on the elevator and cross the road to the hospital cafeteria, so much to choose from, all day, bullet style, make your own whatever, extremely inexpensive, it was like a 5 star restaurant in a hospital, fantastic. can do lots at that campus, shopping, banking, etc, the great stores @9th and Irving, dining,, Pluto’s - amazing steak sandwiches and salads extremely inexpensive, Very clean neighborhood, UCSF, golden gate park and local police all around, nothing horrible ever happened to me there, very very safe. Travel out a few more blocks, Molly stones supermarket, pricey but the quality best to none, surrounding that area, little Eastern Europe stores, more on the other side of the park, but inner sunset only 10 minutes on the tram to the Castro, 15 to the city, If not less, what more could you ask for, pretty much something for everyone. Well, I only left a couple of years ago and yes i will brag, my rent, 2 bedroom, top floor Victorian with attic. $700 a month - the owner actually felt bad increasing it from $650 to $700 , I was very lucky, I think he gets around $3000 a month now. I lived in Hayes valley for nearly 10 years before that, closer to the city, great shops and restaurants on Hayes street, easy walk to everything, but my rent for one room in a nice old Victorian was very high and the area could be dangerous, projects close by, my “local” corner store at least one shooting a week, our Victorian had angled steps leading to the front door, you can guess how that tiny closed off section from the street was used, not nice. I had a wonderful place in ducose triangle for a while, just above the Castro, great area, very wealthy, however no shopping, had to walk down into the Castro, fantastic views, lived in several other little neighborhoods, I love all the little different neighborhoods of SF, so much to see and do in such a small amount of space, never really have to leave, it’s a mini New York. By far the inner sunset however was the best, just over twin peaks, some would say that is so far away, if you consider 2 minutes on the tram tunneling under twin peaks far, I did not have a car, no need of one, really believe that the inner sunset is the place to be - for a long term home in a very safe area with excellent shopping, dining and easy access to everything. Cole valley would be my second choice. if I was a multi millionaire - the little area just above UCSF. Very small area, extremely hilly, very close tight little community, only a couple of streets but everybody really knows each other, lots of neighbor dinners, parties, some celebrities and very wealthy. I think it is called parnassus heights, only 2 ways to enter, once you hit Belmont Ave, every property around that area has character, surrounding views, of course are amazing, this is the area Armistead Maupin once called home. It really is beautiful, quiet, hidden away little area. Visitation valley 😂 seriously never heard of it, I am guessing closer to south San Francisco yuck that is miles away,

Thanks for the neat breakdown! I moved to 9th and Irving about 3.5 years ago when I was single. Great restaurants, mostly chill vibe, a taste of city life without the craziness of downtown (but N Judah made it easy to get downtown), cute shops, farmers market, could pop over to GG Park, Academy of Science (science nerd), etc. on a whim. Things have dimmed a little bit lately - dining in & partying much less these days 🦠 , homeless population went from harmless to somewhat crazy, and hearing the N Judah honk at double parkers during dinner went from alarming to entertaining to tiring. I have a new partner but it’s so hard for her to find parking, not to mention the window smashing, and feeling slightly less safe at night. We’ll soon be moving to a much quieter spot in the Outer Richmond, but I’ll miss being able to walk downstairs and have my pick of Asian spots & pizzerias!

Too much to live there. Go Hawaii! Even Honolulu has 1 bedrooms for $1,350

I heard Hawaii is crazy expensive to live in! I wonder if housing prices went down because damn that’s not bad.

@@IlanaPinsky From what I see and hear, LA, SF, San Diego are far more expensive for housing. I live in a very comfortable condo about five blocks from Waikiki. People are nice and friendly here. I pay $1,400 for my one bedroom apt. But... gas is about $4.10 a gallon, electricity is super high, milk is $6 a gallon. It's a wonderful life in Hawaii.

That’s amazing! Yeah California I’d say is more expensive than Hawaii, but I know housing in Hawaii has gone up and a lot of natives and locals had been priced out. I’m so happy to hear you have a great place though!
