I am stoked to share this with you because I am genuinely excited about this machine how it can make investing in Apple products infinitely cheaper!

Just a friendly reminder by someone from the I.T. industry to always back up your important files in an off-premise cloud as well such as Google Drive or iCloud. Things happen. Having your super important files on at least 3 locations where at least one is off premise ensures you don't lose data that was one of a kind.

I almost bought the Kickstarter but honestly the software is immature, hardware is Ugreen solid. The NAS landscape is changing. The N100 NAS boards that are easy to get are really disrupting the lower end. At the upper end people are going to want ZFS or something like Unraid. The Ugreen NAS is based on Debian so it should ultimately be flexible.

Hi! I'm confused about Ugreen's max storage, THIS 22T*4+4T*2 thing cofuses me. I have a quick question if anyone may happen to know it; it would help a lot so I can get the NAS before the Kickstarter ends. Would I be able to use the 4 bay plus version with 4 of these HDDs (Seagate Exos X18 18TB Enterprise HDD)? My budget is short so I would be buying one at a time. No backup up necessary, I just need external, server-like storage and when one drive starts to decay I will put another and copy everything there. Thank you
@PatrickRambles
@PatrickRambles Ай бұрын
Hey Andrew, it means you can add a max of 22 Terabyte times 4 plus another 4 Terabyte times two in the form of NVME SSD. I run 4x18TB ironwolf drives and they run very well (and loud 😂). I understand the cost issue and you can populate the bays one by one, but since HDD drives can also fail suddenly, it's risky not to run it in a RAID configuration.

@@PatrickRambles Then, I fear, I would not buy it. PCs running Linux would make a much more practical NAS. Or FreeNAS.. One of our offices fell into that trap recently, when the office NAS died, taking with it a great deal of crucial data. They didn't have another copy, thinking that if it was on the NAS, it was "safe." I spent many hours trying to recover the data, got some of it, but unfortunately, the NAS took a couple of crucial folders with it when it died. Bye-bye. A NAS needs backup too.
@PatrickRambles
@PatrickRambles 2 ай бұрын
100% a NAS needs backup. And yes there are much more open options like building your own. I think this NAS is built for people who want the benefits of a NAS but don’t want to dive deep into it. It’s almost plug and play.
@NathanGregoryAuthor
@NathanGregoryAuthor 2 ай бұрын
@@PatrickRambles Agreed, and there is a place for it. But what bothers me about this is these inexpensive standalone NAS systems create a trap that unwary, or unknowledgeable users can fall into all too easily, thinking that if they have a NAS, they are safe, or that a NAS is a replacement for cloud storage. The very title of this video propagates that idea, and that is simply false. A single NAS is NOT a replacement for cloud storage. You need multiple NAS, cloud storage or some other means to backup the NAS. That's my objection, my point, that the video propagates a false sense of security, implying that a single local NAS is a viable alternative to an off-site storage system of some type. It isn't, and by definition, cannot be. I have a NAS, and I use it. But I also have cloud storage, and, frankly, quite a lot of it. The cloud storage backs up my NAS, and my NAS backs up the cloud storage. Yes, your cloud storage needs a backup too! Just because you have iCloud, or G-Drive, or OneDrive does not mean you are safe. While rare, cloud storage does fail too. Simple human error can cause loss of data stored "safely" in the cloud. If you have ONE copy of a file, then you have ZERO copies.
@PatrickRambles
@PatrickRambles 2 ай бұрын
@NathanGregoryAuthor I don’t really see how my title propagates this. I compare NAS storage to internal Mac storage, not cloud storage. It goes without saying that important files need more than one backup.
@NathanGregoryAuthor
@NathanGregoryAuthor 2 ай бұрын
A NAS is great, but always remember...If you have ONE copy of a file, then you have ZERO copies. A NAS protects you against drive failure, but does NOT protect against NAS failure. Your house could be burgled, or burn down, etc. Or the NAS itself can fail (It does happen). So, it does not eliminate the need for cloud storage, or at least a SECOND NAS offsite at another location!

Hello! I have a question. I’m planning on ditching google photos and get myself one of these. My question is : since you can create user profiles. If two different users backup their photos, will they be stored in the same photo library ? Or will each user have their own ? For example say I have a 100 picture of a dog and my wife has 100 pictures of a cat, when I open the photos app. Will I see 200 pictures under my account ?

You can create folders and assign them to different users. You can set it up so that only the user has access. The roles every user has are customizable.

@@PatrickRambles I think understand but I heard from other reviewers that if you use the ugreen app to back up photos they get sent to a default folder into to the nas. I just would like to know if each user will have its own set of photos. The same way google photos is with different gmail accounts.

For truly professional workloads, the lackluster storage is a bit more defensible as external and networked storage options exist are are getting cheaper year over year... I have like 470 gigs of my one terabyte space on OneDrive used up, and 90% of that is photos and videos from my camera and phone. Turns out, games aside, 1 terabyte is kinda hard to fill unless you have a TON of high-quality video content, either as your own production or a media library of lossless Blu-Ray rips.
@PatrickRambles

It's incredibly easy to full up a terabyte with raw video footage. Cloud storage is not fast enough.

Anything that is connected to the internet is susceptible to hacking. Storage companies spend a lot of resources on making their products and applications as robust as possible.

The ugreen product needs a lot of time to mature before even using it for data storage, go with a mature company link synology or qnap. The software on the nas is not very good and missing a lot of features.

@@TheFreestyleStorm I own two Synology NAS'es but I backed this one too on Kickstarter not as a replacement but as an extra media server. Those specs are hard to beat at that price. As much as I like my Synology NAS'es, we need more competition on the NAS department and I hope U green succeeds. 😗

@@xellazfor real the specs are unreal in this space. i have 2 synology nases as well. my issue lies in the fact that the synology software is great yet is hindered by the fact the hardware is so slow. Why even have a good vm manager if i have a slow dual core cpu and 2GB of ram? I can only hope ugreen will have long term support for their software.

@@TheFreestyleStorm Yea man! Most of Synology NAS'es are weak on hardware and the decent ones are too expensive! For the price I paid for my 6-bay DS1621xs+ I could have gotten myself an 8-bay and a 6-bay UGreen NAS at those super early bird pricing and with better hardware and connections! Front SD card reader and dual thunderbolt 4 ports on the higher models! Not to mention dual 10GBe too! That would cost you a fortune if Synology included all those. 😅
