I just love early medieval history, especially the Anglo Saxons and Vikings. It's just such a rich and fascinating period and the art of the age is also breathtaking. I am so lucky to live in an area that was a part of Northumbria and only a short drive or train ride from some of the locations connected to the Vikings, such as York and Lindisfarne. The largest hoard ever discovered (the Cuerdale hoard) was unearthed only a couple of miles from where I live and that makes me feel so close to that period of time and the amazing characters that lived then.

Black Viking by Bill Downey. This one snuck up on me. I was ready to write it off, but it is meticulously researched and is a rousing story.

I love The Last Kingdom Book Series.

Thanks for a most interesting video. I love read out the Vikings. Slightly tangential but even so, a great book told very much in the style of a saga, is The Greenlanders by Jane Smiley. A nonfiction choice I loved is Laughing Shall I Die.

Hello Jennifer. I have read the first two of the books in the Last Kingdom series and agree they are great. I especially like how Cornwell characterizes Alfred. Now that you say the series is finished I may get back to it. I don't know if you've come across it but there is a KZfaq channel I like called Jackson Crawford who is a professor in Colorado who teaches Norse languages. He has a lot of videos on the myths, sagas, language, pronunciation, runes and just about anything else Norse. He delivers in a good laid back style too. I remember reading a science fiction novel called Space Viking by H. Beam Piper. It was along time ago so I won't vouch for how legitimate the Viking part is but to my mind any book titled Space Viking can't be all bad....right?

Your KZfaq channel is really hurting my wallet. I value so many of your recommendations. I have Neil Gaiman’s Norse mythology and it was ok but I read something else by him and didn’t really like it. I borrowed a copy of Norse Myths by Kevin Crossley Holland from the library and it was everything you said. Excellent notes, glossary and I preferred the style of writing. I only read a little bit and promptly ordered a copy. I have Children of Ash and Elm on my wish list. I listened to The Great Courses Viking audiobook last year so very interested in this book as it it sounds like it covers the Vikings extensively. Looking forward to your episode on sagas.

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard is a YA/Middle grade series that is an urban fantasy with Norse mythology as it's premise. It probably wouldn't meet your qualifications for a favorite but they're fun adventurous reads that provide enough Norse myth context for young people

Not a book, but great nonetheless: Outlander (2008), a sci-fi retelling of Beowulf. Truly impressive Viking production design.

Have you read Tim Severin's Viking Trilogy: Odinn's Child, Sworn Brothers, King's Man. I found those to be pretty good representations of the late viking age from Iceland and the colonies on Greenland all the way to Constantinople and ending with the battle of Hastings.

I read Cornwell's archer series years ago and very much enjoyed it, so I've had my eye on the Last Kingdom series for a while. I've also got a couple historical fantasy books by Guy Gabriel Kay on my shelves, though I haven't read either yet, and I'm pretty sure he did a Viking themed book, wondering if you've ever read him?

I think you would really enjoy The Circle of Ceridwen series by Octavia Randolph. It is set during the similar time as the last kingdom but you really see how life was probably like for the women of the time which we really don't know much of. the whole series I will never forget and it is almost complete. One more book to go it also shows in such a interesting way the good and bad parts of Christianity vs paganism and the choice people had to make back then between the two.
