Is this the ultimate winter sleeping bag? This is my review of the Rab Ascent 1100 sleeping bag. The Rab Ascent sleeping bag range are down sleeping bags ideal for 4 season sleeping bag use.
Despite it’s large size, this four season sleeping bag packs down into a reasonable small package so can be used for backpacking too.
This four season sleeping bag weighs 1725 grams. It is approximately 210cm long x 80cm wide at its widest point.
At £310, it is not a cheap sleeping bag but I still think it's reasonable value for money. I got mine for £220 so it's worth shopping around. Expedition sleeping bag can cost up to £1000 so if you're prepared to take a little more weight and a bit more bulk you're getting a fantastic sleeping bag at a good price.
Full details found here: rab.equipment/uk/ascent-1100
This is what Rab say:
The warmest in the Ascent range, the Ascent 1100 is a down-filled sleeping bag that provides reliable protection in cold winter conditions. Designed specifically for regular outdoor use, this is ideal for those buying their first down sleeping bag for serious winter use.
Thanks, Andy.

Hi Andy, on your recommendation I went ahead and bought the Black Ice 700 down sleeping bag. Very happy with it. Arrived yesterday and I slept in it on top of my bed in my freezing cold flat last night, well, it's 13° at night inside here at the moment (can't put the heating on yet) and I have to say I was warm! I had to ditch my hot water bottle and for the first time ever, I didn't need to wear my hat in bed!!! So thanks for the tip off. Now to test it outside in a tent...

Having a proper winter sleeping bag actually makes you look forward to the cold nights. With my old bag I was always worried about the temperature dropping which spoilt the camp. Now I can go camping with peace of mind I'll be nice and cosy no matter the temperature.

A good vid I'm new to your channel and I'm enjoying it. My question is have you considered military surplus, I've just recently got a British Arctic sleeping bag and it's the warmest one so far, haven't yet tested it in the real outdoors, that will happen at a camp in Feb but it only cost £35. For me getting the best value for money is essential, this is the first bit of military stuff I've bought but it definitely won't be the last. Thanks for reading this, keep going and stay safe👍

I too have the Rab Asent 1100 and a Fab Bag. A touch unfair comparing the OEX 400 to it as I also have the OEX Leviathan EV 900 Sleeping Bag Temp -9 to Comfort -16 ... Iv'e used it to -10 and with a Thermarest Mat rated to R4.9 very comfortable with minimual clothing. However everybodys different on how they gain and lose heat. But the Rab I've had that down to -18 to -22 in Canada for 3 nights wearing a thin Marino Wool Thermal suit and "nice n comfortable". More than capable in the UK.

Maybe the 500 or 300. I have the 700 and was a bit too warm in The Highlands last weekend. I'm a cold sleeper. It was 9/10°C and rained all through the night. I ended up sleeping in a short sleeved top with my arms out of the bag. The 1100 is much warmer than the 700 so I'd definitely say it wouldn't be for UK summers.

I have the British army arctic sleeping bag that i use pretty much all year around but it is just so big and heavy, I can find it a bit chilly sometimes in the winter too. I was tempted to get this as a replacement but now worried that it might be too hot for warmer camps. Is there such a thing as a realistic "all-season" sleeping bag? or would you just go for 2 separate systems

500 would be fine for warmer weather. 1100 is over the top unless it’s deep winter in minus temperatures. The 700 would be a good 3 season bag and could deal with some chilly nights.

I tend to get cold and took the 700 out for its first trip last week. Around 9/10°C overnight temperatures and it rained all night. I didn't get cold once, but was too warm for a while. I've never been too warm when I first go to bed camping. Even if I get too warm later, I'm always chilly to start with. Not with that one. It was milder than I thought it would be, but good to know it will see me down to cooler temperatures and with a liner would probably see me through pretty much any UK weather. Maybe just the liner for warmer weather and no sleeping bag. I'm trying to figure out if the 300 might be a good summer bag. As a side sleeper, who tends to curl up, I can say I love the 700. I could easily change sleep position without either getting drafty or having to fight with it to let me move.
