I always wondered if Mod Podge was actually good at protecting, nice to know it really is. If I ever make terrain for kids I'll remember that final test piece.

Very informative video, thanks! I use Johnsons Klear acrylic floor wax to seal foam brick walls after painting before I apply the wet mortar mix as it makes it easier to remove the mortar residue but I haven't really tested it for protection.

Looks like being careful is the best option. Expect to repair things. Good science.

Great test! I started out using BMC formula ( modpodge, acrylic paint and a little water) I still do that, but add Ace Hardware Clear Acrylic Sealer to the mix. Really makes for a hard surface. Does dry glossy, but I spray it with a matte clear coat to tone it down.

I use Mod Podge and mix it with color. Seen from Black Magic Craft. 😉

I’m interested in this experiment again after the full 4 week cure but not only that, Gerard, try DecoArt DuraClear. It is a Polyurethane varnish and is available in gloss, matte and ultra matte. I have used it for sealing my diamond art and 1 coat was very durable. Just a thought for you, but again it would need to be fully cured before you would get the true result.

The only test I don't see is foam that has already had its surface compressed a bit by doing something like texturing with a ball of aluminium foil. AS this is quite a usual thing to do and would likely affect the surface structure it would be a good addition I think 😉

I would have liked to see the Spray Primer from Army Painter in this contest, as they write, it would be special designated for this purpose.

for a gaming club this could very well be worth the time to do so many coats

The best think I've found is spray on polyurethane varnish. You need to make sure it's foam safe but it's not tough to find and it's very strong without dulling paint colours.

you could make the cracks work if you want to maybe make it look like there is some sort of falling trap ahead

My next thought after seeing this is how much surface detail/texture do you lose with that many layers on top?

Just wondering, your finish with multiple layers of paverpol is giving cracks. what if you change the layers? So first paint and woodglue, then the layers of paverpol and last the layers of woodglue or mod podge? My guess is that you have no cracks then. I give all my parts a basecoat with a combination black paint + woodglue + Cre-ation Crea Patch glue (action) The crea patch glue is a combination of glue and varnish.
