The Unattainable American Dream Is Broken and in this video I will be exposing just how. looking at the history of its berth, it is easy to see that it was sort of a lie to begin with. There has always been a sort of myth about it, especially with how elusive it really is for MOST individuals. If one were to ask a highly successful person if it is indeed exists the likely answer is to be yes, it's still alive, or yes, it is not dead or over. The lens in which they see things is different from one on the bottom struggling and doing every single thing they can. For them this "dream" just becomes more and more not real. In my opinion, to even have this mindset from the early 1900's in a modern society that has changed so much, is just irresponsible and selfish.

@@ChristopherLRussell My comment was meant from the perspective of what a "Dream" means in the german language. A dream = Traum = and besides of the actual meaning which is what you experience in your sleep "a dream" is an unrealistic thing solely based on "Wunschdenken"/wishfulness. A guy who thinks unrealistic and unreasonable is therefore called in German "Ein Träumer/a dreamer" and means basically "A fool far beyond realism". When someone states his expectations of his future life which then sounds way over the top and unachievable then he will get as answer the statement "Ja, Ja, träum weiter"/Yeah I hear you so now dream on/keep on dreaming" Your content in that vlog was none of those, therefore I wrote "You are awake" And my statement about the US Media and Goverment was meant that those are just selling "dreams" for the most part in order for certain politicians to get elected and it works..therefore you have those kind of politicians in charge who are working solely into their own pockets and for their doners instead providing a better future for the american people no matter what social class...at least that´s my perspective of those things about what´s going on in the US for decades now...and I´m a bit over 50 therefore my overview is for quite a time now...I follow US policy on the surface since the Ronald Reagan area where actually his wife Nancy was secretly in charge.

Wow Christopher, I can't be more thankful that I've come across your video. We also moved to Germany (about a year and a half ago), and as I've spent more time here, I've been struggling putting into words my disappointment and dissatisfaction with the American mindset. You've done it flawlessly! I can't agree more with everything you've said, and to think that I had to move halfway across the world to get rid of the brainwashing American's undergo makes me worried for others who won't get this opportunity. The things that I have are mostly for necessity as they allow me to have less stress. Less stress and simplicity make me happy. I know what you mean by "outside looking in." My beliefs and opinions changed so much, even in the years I was still in the Army in Germany. After almost 24 years as an American in Germany I often find the egotistical belief that American is the greatest country in the world laughable. Don't get me wrong I love the U.S. but in every measurable way it hasn't been the "Greatest" in a long time. When our Grandparents and Great Grandparents were our age I think it was. At least it was the land of the greatest opportunity for a certain class(race) of people. I love watching your videos. It so often confirms my opinions and observations as an Expat.

"There is no such thing as a self-made man. We are made up of thousands of others. Every one who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success." - George Matthew Adams Too many people don't realize how much a role pure 'chance' plays in everything, how much of what we can achieve is possible or limited by things we can't influence. Every success stands on the corpses of other peoples failed attempts to gain the same success. And its not because the others worked less hard, were less invested or took less risks... they might have worked even harder, more invested and took much larger risks, maybe because they had to start from a less optimal position, maybe because they just were actually better. It's because they were less lucky. And being lucky doesn't mean the recipe for success falling out of the sky into your lap, it means all the things that happened on your path to your success not blocking your way for good. And thats why social policy is so important, why it is right to tax the rich and help the poor ... because you can't distribute fortune, but you can distribute fortune.

A very good and thought provoking video. I think the idea of The American Dream is being squashed due to big pharma, big agriculture and big business. The U.S. was known as "the land of opportunity" at one time. That works into the American Dream ideology that is still believed by many immigrants but not so much by American citizens. This idea is still what prevails throughout the world, even though it isn't believed by most U.S. citizens. I believe or wish to believe that it was meant for all races, all religions and both genders (now all genders) ideally. Again, it was a vision for what America was supposed to be and what it COULD be in the future. It seems that fewer people believe or even know of their own American Dream due to the pressures of those factors said at the beginning and this new overly undue sense of entitlement. In my opinion, I think that people choosing to chase their own dreams IS THEIR American Dream. Ok, my brain is hurting from so much thinking. lol Can't wait for your next video.

Where this dream thing falls short of being a potentially good thing is where alll the spoils of an effort go to the individual and stay there basically. If the spoils were given back to society (with some rewards to the individual) it would have become more akin to communism. Where everybody contributes due to his abilities. But does not get unproportionally rewarded. E.g. like a Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos etc.

Hello Christopher, I think you have personally made an important step and I think it is great if you help your Followers to wake up. I notice that many people - at least here in Europe - want to be saved and in exchange for this protection program increasingly want to hand over responsibility to others. As soon as "mistakes" occur and the hoped-for feeling of well-being fails to materialize, culprits are sought and punished. Living one's own dream also means taking responsibility for one's own actions. This is how you grow up, and it hurts and brings difficulties with it. An example of this full-service mentality? There was a bus with tourists going to a war zone in Syria or Libya a few years ago to take photos. The idea alone is incredible. Photo safari to war. Do they have a pedestrian airbag? They were captured by an armed group. There were dramatic cries for help and an appeal for the special forces of the Bundeswehr to free the hostages. How stupid do you have to be? There were also success stories in several of my wife's women's magazines of start-up entrepreneurs living out their lifelong dream with a wool store or similar on Mallorca. Success? Sure, at 30 degrees I knit myself sweaters! That with gem earn money runs then like "cut bread" (a german phrase)... a self runner. These are just a few stories that run in the wrong direction. I don't have to tell you this, you're doing fine. I'm writing it here because otherwise the message "do your thing" only creates other problems if "you" don't also face the responsibility. Many become a coach but can't make a living from it. A wool store on Mallorca or the store with the Bathik designer socks in Spain is possibly a self-realization project, but is it a sustainable life concept? Only if you have a partner with money at your side or you have enough assets yourself. You can do everything, if you are ready to bear the consequences. So make "yourself" smart before, if "you" can do it. It's only fair to tell people that, because unfortunately many don't want to see it. Otherwise, many continue to dream, but it turns into a nightmare.

I think ppl have to rethink what they are dreaming about. The big question is, what are your dreams made off, where did they come from, what do you expect coming with your dreams. If we dont understand where our dreams comming from, we will not understand ourselves and our dreams will left a whole in uns and we will never be satisfied with our achivements. The core of our dreams is not having a famliy, having a lot of money and travel around the world. It is not even to be save, healthy or wealthy. All of this things we wish in our lifes are deceiving us if we do not undertsand what we really want. The core of our dreams is to have a happy life. A happy life is achived if we are peaceful, free to express our love for life and in harmony between our actions and intentions. We want joy, because that is what life has to offer. When we think our dreams are money or position, we do not understand ourselves and our dreams will lead us into a dark place. We dream of this things because we were told and told ourselves, that we need this things to be happy and to enjoy. If we do not understand this, no matter how you call the dream, it is missleading. That are my thoughts on this.

"The thing about happiness is that you only know you had it when it's gone. I mean, you may think to yourself that you're happy. But you don't really believe it. You focus on the petty bullshit, or the next job, or whatever. It's only looking back, by comparison to what comes after, that you really understand that's what happiness felt like." - Kellogg (Fallout 4) There's a lot of truth in that. Because most adults become something they never wanted to become as a child. ... just part of the machine...

There is a pretty interesting TedTalk on this topic, I forgot the name tho. Basically, the American dream is all about class mobility: From rags to riches, poor to rich. The right term is class mobility, which describes your chance to make if from a lower class to a higher class. Now comes the funny part: Even tho this idea is called "the American dream", the US is one of the countries with the LOWEST CLASS MOBILITY IN THE WORLD. Many countries in Europe like Denmark, Norway, Switzerland and some other countries have waaaay higher class mobility than the US. Even Germany, which has a very bad class mobility compared to other countries in Europe, has a way better class mobility than the US. So yes, I guess it is safe to say that the American dream is dead, at least in the US.

I still have "my american dream" but it's somewhere hidden in the dungeons of my back brain. As a guy who has been to the US several times and knows people who actually went out to live their american dream, I came to terms with the so-called american dream. Too many people fail because to them it's more like fleeing one place and then failing in another. You can only be successful in another part of the world if you are successful here. The ones who still remain in the US were doing great over here so to the ones thinking if they would be in the US everything would change for the better, not any more. I cherish the things I have over here and I would give up those things trying to make it somewhere where I don't even know if I could survive the first year or months. At this point, I just live "my american dream" when going on vacation but moving to the US at that current state, especially when this country seems more divided than ever?! Not happening....

The American dream is like the lotto...Some win but most don't and Americans are convinced that this is absolutely atainable by everyone. This fact will never be true..It assumes that one will remain healthy or is smart enough or lucky enough and the realit is that a large part of Americans have bought into this to the point where you hear people at age 60 still believeing it even though it is clear that they will never achieve this in their lifetime! This is the one big positive I can say about Germany (You know I am not always positive! LOL) Since I live in Germany I respect that Germany accepts the fact that not all will be able to rise to the top andthat the "average joe" should still have a decent living standard! That is the wise and true way to think about it...I now accept the fact that I probably wont reach the American dream, but thanks to Germany I have a really nice quality of life and if because of bad luck I shoud get sick or lose my job, I will still be take care of because I live in Germany! ...Now if only the Americans could learn from this.

Because I also try to find the source of emotions in others. Often this is easier than it sounds. You say you are not a therapist, but you are profound. One of the main reasons I subscribed to you. Good work!

No words. But this is a strong Video with a message! A message that not everyone can understand. But its there, Thumbs up! My dream is to live in a world. In which money no longer plays a role. But not in the sense that everyone has enough money. Just that money is not longer plays a role in society. That you help yourself and others without having to pay for it. A world without money is a better one. In my opinion. But thats nothing I can change.

the american dream was built on false foundations from the beginning. in my opinion there was never the american dream for everyone, not for the indians, who simply stole everything, from the country to the culture, and not for the slaves from one also took everything for a few to get rich and powerful. the american dream from dish washer to millionaire was basically just a legend.the topic is difficult to comment on in a few lines. Germany certainly owes a lot to the usa after the Second World War. but more to many us citizens and less to the usa. unfortunately, I am no longer the youngest and have a lot in my life met a lot of people, including old us veterans with black skin, who for the first time in their lives in post-war europe what it means to be really equal before the law. restaurant to be treated like everyone else on every bus and train, they took with them to the USA and incorporated it into their struggle for human rights.many activists around martin luther king were former soldiers who were in italy, germany, netherlands, belgium or france and discovered a whole new world - a world that even a racist forced to serve you in a bar. or that one was a little smaller workers do not have to be exploited.Incidentally, I would also like to thank you. Without the black us citizens, I would not exist. 2 black us soldiers found my mother, seriously ill and on the run in a destroyed house in 1945, although she received the instructions from her white officers just let her lie there, they gave her medication and food and took her to a us lazaret. her heart was bigger than her obedience. every year at christmas I was told this story as a child.

When we talked about American history in class at my German school, our teacher told us that the American dream was really only for white men. Women had to fight hard for their equal rights and obviously if you were a minority and/or especially black, most doors would be closed for you from birth. The thought of the American dream was always so weird to me, why are so many people in the US so miserable if everyone has the same opportunities? It never made sense

a LOT of the problem w 95% of Americans never achieving the "American Dream" & only 5% achieving it is because 95% of the people in America aren't willing to do what it takes to become successful. its not gonna happen over night & not even in a few years but a lifestyle change is necessary to go from poor to financially independent. an interesting saying is that if you took all the money in the world & divided it up evenly, it would be back in the hands of the rich in no time. poor people spend money & save whats left & rich people save money & spend whats left. its a lifestyle. entrepreneurial multi level marketing gives people the best chance to achieve their dreams, no matter what country, color or religion you are. a lot of times, it doesn't matter if you have no education & if you're a felon. it's tough out there but it doesn't have to be.

The "American Dream" is much older than the term American Dream. In the past, when we still had the monarchy in Europe, many emigrated to America to live this dream. But at that time, this dream was less materialistic (I guess) and more characterized by the idea of freedom. As you say at 5:55 , there are very few who are ultra-rich. The majority live paycheck to paycheck. Isn't the current situation then similar to the past when people left monarchist Europe? In this world, everything has gone crazy.... Now even Americans are coming to Germany because the "new monarchy" is no longer what the U.S. once stood for. "They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions Why did they never mention, what's real and in between? It seems the path we're on was paved with blood and sorrow No thought about tomorrow Just part of the machine, or so it seems" - Five Finger Death Punch - Living The Dream

I think for most Germans the definition of the American Dream is "Vom Tellerwäscher zum Präsidenten", i.e. maximum upwards social mobility. But these days, I think, most people think it's exactly that, a dream, because in order to come to a place of power, you already need to be in a privileged position.

It's a little more complicated than that. Being rich is no guarantee for success. If you want to get to the top, you also have to be part of the elite (and "elite" doesn't necessarily mean something positive). For example, the 2 Bush presidents were both members of the "Skull and Bones" student union. Once Skull and Bones, always Skull and Bones. And french President Marcon, austrias ex-Chancellor Kurz, german Green Party leader Baerbock, german Health Minister Spahn and many others are part of the WEF's "Young Global Leaders" program. In a few words: You have to be chosen by the top 0.001% to get into a position of power.
