I think the thing that's interesting (for the Infinite customization anyway) is that as I've played, there are certainly a number of people who try out the more jokey customization for a bit, but over time, I see fewer and fewer people wearing them until there's only a small portion of the population who will always wear that kind of customization.

Honestly, I'm mostly just getting so sick of seeing the mohawk and cyber eye shields. Oversaturation really is the word.

The only customization option with real prestige seams to be the Watchdog armor and weapon coatings, which interestingly were earned by playing Halo 5. Other than that, maybe the flaming head or footsteps, as they had to be earned by completing the battle pass, and day 1 infinite players have Bleached Bone and the ZVEZDA set which is somewhat prestigious.

The teddy is fine as it's a reference to a Halo Legends episode. I wish it was for the Reach set, and Emile's helmet is fine as it's one character's in the campaign.

The only item with allure is the Mk 7 helmet when not coated in a HCS skin. And that is simply due to it being at the end of the battle-pass, being noticeable and seeming a lot of players choosing other helmets/cores so it doesn't become over saturated. For most of the rest, they don't have personal appeal unless they are references to halo media like the teddy bear, being a reference to one of the shorts from Halo Legends. And as a result if have no issues with it and would buy it if it ever reached a decent price (i.e £4 or less (500 credits).

It's definitely strange seeing the bright, loud, colorful stuff being easier to get than the more grounded things, and most often what players will wear. Call me petty, but i feel just a tad invalidated when i grind out the entire battle pass for a flaming head and a trail of fire, then some guy gets a laser mohawk for free. It's like if Reach just handed out Haunted and Eternal for free but you had to grind to Inheritor just for the default helmet.

I think Ascend Hyperion has the most well thought out and deliberate opinions in the Halo community. Everywhere there is nuance, he acknowledges it and explains his point of view. He actively restates opposing or different opinions, validates points that are right, and explains details that are wrong. It's refreshing to see an intelligent conversation about a game while still remembering the fun factor. At the end of the day, it's "just a game." Too often do I see a battle of opinions that have no real substance or willingness to acknowledge others. These "arguments" usually devolve into pointless rants. GG Valid points everywhere. I have no way to show my own realistic spartan. I was totally apart of the group that thought, "Wow I am going to make the most ideal Spartan I have ever thought up for myself in this game. I cannot wait for this extreme amount of customization." Oh how I was wrong... I still am using DEFAULT RECRUIT ORANGE. This is a problem.

I've BEEN feeling this would happen with the introduction of unrealistic armor. I was kinda happy it would be only linked to certain armor cores but armor cores only made the situation worse because now you have empty armor sets

I must be in like the 5% of players who prefer realistic items over quirky ones from the start and didn't even participate in the events because I found the silliness of the armor pieces and coatings repelling. Edit: Also, the existence of armor cores is terrible. I want to be able to put mark 7 and mark 5 stuff on each other and use armor coatings and colors on all armor types. That is really what kills it for me. I unlock the camo armor coating but can only use it on mark 7, not mark 5. Terrible.

Same thing could be said about vehicle and weapon cosmetics everything is so wacky, before launch I was looking forward to giving all UNSC vehicles forest camo to make them look more modern and "realistic". What a damn shame...

Yeah, I think this is why a lot of people had problems with the season 8 armor in MCC. It felt like the game was being over-saturated with wacky and over-the-top cosmetics. And now here we are with Infinite and the problem is actually a problem now because you can't just toggle off the wacky stuff.

All I wanted was a blue and yellow spartan. In the beta there was an amazing metallic blue & gold armor coating when you reached max level. I was excited to get it in the full release but it ended up being a store item. Even though I want it because it looks cool, I don't care about it now because there is no prestige behind unlocking it like there would have been if it was a reward. It doesn't mean anything anymore and I'm not going to buy it.

Thank you for making this. I've been saying this from launch. Customisation is what keeps me playing Halo. I'm an average to good player. I'm not MLG. I despise ranked. I'm not a competetive Halo elite. But I had recon in Halo 3, I had Inclement Weather in Reach. I got all the Vidmaster Achievements. I worked hard to earn my way in those games because the cosmetics and the self expression they embody are what matter the most to me in these games. I played Halo Infinite till I beat the battle pass and I haven't come back except for a the events and even then I just unlocked what I wanted and left it again. I have no incentive to play this game anymore. The Battle Pass was a JOKE and an insult as most of the armour was taken out of it and put in the store, replaced with challenge swaps (which is a whole other rant) and what they did give you was downright insulting. There are two, AT LEAST, unlocks of the SAME colour blue. The exact same shade for both carter and Kat's armour suits which is WRONG coz Carter is deep blue and Kat is teal. They didn't even get the fucking cosmetics RIGHT and they expect us to be satisfied. If you did not byuy the battlepass or play the campaign you CANNOT customise your spartan in any way that matters and that's just downright not acceptable. I was beyond excited for this game but they just lied to us. They lied to our faces and I'm over it. I don't care if this game is free to play. I've played plenty of free to play titles with better player expression than this. It's not an excuse and I will not entertain it as one.

The fact that it’s all based around monetisation is the biggest problem… There is no player expression because none of the armour actually means anything… When I saw someone wearing Recon or Haunted, I knew what I was in for and when I saw their colours I knew that the player chose those colours…now I just think “I wonder how much they paid for that?” And “that’s probably just the only good coating they have” why do I think that? Because my armour also means nothing to me now, there’s no personal expression just a bunch of cosmetic options that have no memories attached to them… This isn’t my Spartan anymore, my gameplay has no relation to the Spartan taking up space in my menus. And 100% of the people claiming that it doesn’t matter because it’s just cosmetic are full of shit because not a single one of them were just wearing only default options in 3, Reach, 4 or even 5…

I honestly don't like how a lot of the Spartans look in this game because of all the mish mash and unrealistic stuff they have now, no way would the UNSC allow those neon Spartans anywhere but the dance floor! Yet here they are trying to break my kneecaps! And I really like that filter thing on the Yokai helmet, I like my spartan to look bulky and tactical at the same time. Almost like a flood containment spartan or security guard or something. I try to give my spartan some kinda story, but that's kinda hard to do in Infinite. Especially when I feel like the emersion is broken by that spartan WITH CAT EARS!!! C'mon 343 they gameplay is fun, now give us less neon, weird, out-of-place junk, and me some more realistic junk to put on my glorious Spartan.

The only form of prestige/allure in Infinite are the ultimate challenge rewards and the ranked rewards. Unfortunately most of those things have been emblems or things that are barely noticeable in game. But when they do give better rewards like the recon helmet weapon charm for ranked or a gun/armor coating as an ultimate challenge reward, it really hits for me.

So far, the only cosmetics that bring allure to me are EVENT cosmetics such as the neon mohawk, yoroi armors & the Christmas hip attachment. We need events with casual, NORMAL armour for all cores (and maybe credits too) so people can actually EARN stuff instead of PURCHASING it.

Honestly the items with the most prestige to me are the mk7 helmet and the swordsman's belt utility because they both show that you have completed a battle pass that requires some effort, the sacrifice emblem used to but I've mostly forgotten about it, nonetheless sacrifice (the nameplate at least) is currently the closest we have to something like hyabusa in terms of effort but for a most part I at least pay very little attention to nameplates especially on the lineup when I could be looking at people's spartans.

The only thing that creates ‘allure’ for me is the weekly reward. While it’s not hard to obtain, it took many hours to get the week one tea armor coating and this week’s is a red one for the ninja core. I remember hearing that the battle pass for infinite was gonna be same as the MCC. The nice this was, that you didn’t have to buy it you can play the game and earn what the battle pass offers. I personally liked the Reach handled it but that just me. Both Reach and MCC had a sort of progression to them that the player can choose what they want when they earn them. Infinite sadly doesn’t do that. Yeah there’s armor pieces I want but I have to pull I my wallet to get them. Two things that I hate in this modern era of gaming is the random drops of armor in certain events, like Destiny, and paying rather then earning the armor you want, Halo infinite.

For me there's only two goofy armors in the game that I can excuse and those two are the teddy bear chest piece since it's a reference to a Halo Legends Spartan that wore red CQB armor set with a teddy bear charm on her chest. Of course sadly in Infinite they have the bear but no way to recreate that Spartan 's look since there's no CQB armor set for the MK7 core and you can't even use the CQB chest piece with the bear even if it did exist. Now the other armor that is "goofy" that I can get behind is the Yoroi armor core because even though it is an alternate reality samurai armor all of its armor pieces fit within that established aesthetic, a demon helmet, swords for your waist, kunai knives for the chest it all follows the samurai aesthetic. And as far as prestige in Infinite I guess the only things you could consider prestigious would be the campaign coatings but the only thing you need to do for those is go to a map marker.

The only status symbol items would be the Battlepass items but you can just buy your way to rank 100 so it's not even a real achievement. It's one of the core issues with Infinite's game play loop. There is nothing you can work towards in terms of customization that can't be a achieved with a high enough credit card limit.

My biggest bugbear is core -locking custom pieces. It seems fair for SOME stuff, but colours? Visor textures?!

Personally, I feel no attraction towards any of these extravagant armors. I'd much rather see the many cool looking, realistic armors 343 introduced in this game, and occasionally see something weird that stands out and makes me want to wear it. Most of all, though, I want to be able to look realistic without spending tons of money in a rotating store.

I appreciated that photo comparison around 9:43. I’m actually one of the few people I know who liked H5 armor styles, but it definitely felt more “out there” when compared to previous titles. I’ve felt bothered when the customization options for Halo Infinite seemed more ridiculous, but I really couldn’t put a finger on why until I saw that picture. Anyway, great video, and thanks for your levelheaded and thought out approach to content. It’s refreshing to see.

My issues really isn’t the ease of access to goofy cosmetics. after all, MCC is also like that. My issue is more that there isn’t a balance between the goofy and realistic stuff that players can get for free. I’m okay with literally every cosmetic in the game, I just wish it was balanced around the different types of armor and distributed better.

A strongly agree with you. I hate seeing every single random team I am matched up with (teammates and the enemy team) all having the cyber showdown stuff (which the modeling for the “glasses” and Mohawk are still not fixed and uneven on the player model). I want there to be a leveling system like Halo 5, but let’s say every 5 levels you get a new realistic customization option (let’s say max is 117) and every 10 levels you get a more unique realistic customization option. Then with an accommodation system, you can get crazy stuff that has been in previous games (like the haunt helmet for example). There can still be a store, but only for luxury items like we kind have. Make skins in packs but at a LOW price, helmets are “meh” price, and full packs are 15 bucks. Then add all the base colors to the skins, like white, grey, and black for all the armors. It really REALLY funny how a 17 year old can think of a way to make the customization system way better than a full experience development team of 30-40 years olds. Also one last thing, they need to give us more helmet options, like two attachments at one per helmet. I just want to have my mark 7 helmet to have a side attachment and the visor attachment.

The only item I earned and felt proud of in Infinite is the Willow Tea coating. Had to complete a weekly challenge set and the final challenge. And it's not outlandish like cat ears or a holographic mohawk

The shot at the end showing the difference between HALO 5 and HALO Infinete is priceless. makes me wonder how the people who bulyed 343s artstile feel now. What we have for customisation now is esentualy a joke. The worst part is, even if you buy everything you posiby can, there really isn't much you can do to make you sparten look good becuses there is so little freedom for what you can do. This game deserved better.

An item that has a lot of alure is the 20th anniversary items, especially the armour coating. You had to play the game in the first week of it’s release, so not many people have it.

it's inevitable result of a system where you are paying for visual impact. players don't want to pay money for the color blue especially when it isn't any more visually distinct on the field than the default options, but a holographic Halo over their head is striking, and an effect they couldn't approximate otherwise. vibrant colors and exaggerated profiles read at a distance/at speed and have more "character", which means they're more visible to the other players to whom you're showing off your spartan. so those will grab attention, thus player credits, and 343 is going to follow the money with what their data is indicating will sell.

Fun fact. The teddy bear armor that was mentioned in the video is actually a real thing in halo. For anyone who has seen halo legends, the teddy bear is actually a reference to daisy, a Spartan who made a main appearance in one of the story’s in the movie.

To address the final question, there is one set of items that will certainly hold value, which is the platinum anniversary set Also, the rewards from the capstone challenges show that you at least went and grinded the game for that challenge

There absolutely is one thing that has prestige. The halo 5 rank 152 coatings. That said, they fact that the look worse than originally advertised and have an almost duplicate version through HCS unlocks.....well that's just classic 343 at work

ITS THE TEDDY BEAR FROM HALO LEGENDS! I don't remember which episode, but it's the one that dives into the story of a Spartan and her flash clone. The teddy bear was a gift from the clone to the Spartan. I want it.

The funny thing for me is that i stick to using the color palettes from the campaign lockers because i refuse to spend any money on microtransactions for such restrictive and limited color combination options, but the apparent consequence of this is that i barely ever run into anybody else using the same color palettes as i am.

The only customization pieces I’m proud of and grinded to earn is the ODST helmet, mark VI helmet, mark VII helmet, and the onyx weapon emblem. So at least to me, there is some level of prestige to those items. After receiving those items I have been playing considerably less. I still play every other week or so. Also I suppose it’s worth noting, the only things I bought in the store were the cat ears and an HCS skin. And I only bought them with friends. I never wear them unless I play with that group of friends (maybe once a month?) and haven’t bought anything since, even though all of those items are more attractive than my “earned” stuff. The mark vi helmet and onyx emblem mean way more because of the time it took to get them. I feel like the cosmetics I earn (even if subtle) are timeless, while the store stuff I only wore for about 2 days after I bought them 🤷‍♂️ Nonetheless, I still love the game tho and I’m excited for season 2

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here. I really want armour that’s tied to achievement again. The Vidmasters for Recon was an amazing idea back in the day, but it doesn’t all have to be that intense. Even stuff like beat the campaign to get Mk. VI would be the right idea. Cross-game would he fun as well-Beat Halo Wars 2 for Mk IV.

I agree with this 100%... but "play the game for a few hours / complete a few simple challenges" to get like the 25th Tenrai event unlock is a bit of a misrepresentation

The Willow Tea armor coating is rarely seen in-game. It was one of the first ultimate challenge unlocks and it's quite difficult to find people using it. Either it be because hardly any people unlocked it, or maybe they just don't have it equipped. But either way to my understanding it has some prestige to it just due to people's negligence of trying to get it while it was obtainable. Zvezda armor as well as mentioned in other comments, but that one is a paywall so I'd hardly say it's prestigous.

This core issue stems from a problem I've had with every game 343 has produced; They don't like to give players the standard armor of the era the game takes place in. Instead they always make a separate look for "rookies" that has no purpose but to make players who have no armor stand out like a sore thumb. For example, all of Bungie's Halo games made the starting armor be the hero's armor, the armor people would see prominently in all the game's marketing and given a lot of respect prior to the game's release. This made it so that, while most people would still diverge to other armors, many people would still wear default armor because it was still cool. In Halo 4 and 5, not only did you get "recruit" armor which was very random and only visible in the background of one screenshot and maybe a weapon trailer leading up to Halo 4's release, but you also could never get Master Chief's armor. In Halo 5 you could get Osiris's armor or the rest of Blue Team, though splattered with tons of annoying white decals, but still no trace of Master Chief's armor from the Campaign. Now, in Infinite, the same thing is still happening, random helmet with no relevance or value to single out people who have no other helmets, no access to Master Chief's armor at all, and furthermore the base helmet for the default armor set is one of the later rewards for the battle pass! The Mk VII helmet is literally in every visor preview, but you don't start with it! Idk why 343 hates letting players wear the same armor as Master Chief, but it's not cool.

As long as the free stuff in the battle pass looks good I’m fine with some of the more wacky stuff though there should be something for beating the campaign on legendary or laso and for getting to certain ranks that isn’t just for your weapon I probably would have done laso already if there was a reward worthwhile getting

It seems to me that Halo Infinite aquired a common free-to-play trend in its customization system: by promoting player expression through whacky skins, armors and items and rewarding the average player with these itens, what's left to the 1% players to show their distinction is something else, since regular armour and helmets are locked behind a paywall. I see something similar happening in Rocket League, where average players (myself included) fill their cars with shiny skins and items, while the top 1% players usually use standard car and customization.

This game has the best groundwork but 343 have a special way of just fucking things up. If they allowed all the content in season 1 to be freely obtainable, and let all the Reach armour be obtained by the battle pass (not paid for in the store) then the reception would've been much better. Then on season 2 start flooding the shop with pay walled items after you already have the good will of the player base. But no, they've done everything wrong. I've tried to put up with this studio for the last 10 years but they've just constantly disappointed. At least Infinite had its 10 minutes in the lime light with its huge launch. Haven't even played the game myself properly for ages now.

Not to sound jaded and living the past, but customization used to mean something more than just being able to look at your cool spartan that you look at in your armor, it was a genuine form of expression. Before customization was a result of either difficulty which demonstrated your commitment/ability to overcome those challenges or acted as a hallmark of a good player since a certain level of skill was required; Or simply expensive cosmetics that showed off to others how much you play/love that game; And lastly, the limited variety made each armor piece/set more noticeable and memorable, being able to clearly identify what someone's style when they kill you or are on your team. I'm not saying we need less customization, but that it held more weight in the past for a few reasons to parody Ascend.

You're right, there aren't really any status symbol items I've noticed. The issue, for me, is that the vast majority of customization items are behind a paywall, be that the armor store or the battle pass. Even if you have a piece of armor that's unlocked at the very end of the battle pass and required a grind to get, I know you have it and other people don't because you paid money and they didn't.

Maybe an additional event item if you completed every event challenge during its duration would add a more prestige item. Let's say the light mohawk was obtainable by doing all 20 event challenges over the 2 weeks, you earn something from 1-10 then 11-19 are blank or challenge swaps. Or Tenrai had a Level 60 item that was a really gaudy helmet or coating. People would moan about it not respecting time etc. But it would be something to show off with pride more than other event items

The art style was diminished greatly as goofy wacky cosmetics SELL, how many people did you know who were dead set on never purchasing a THING until those cat ears launched?

This hits the nail on the head. When it comes to the gimmick items I feel like the relationship is backwards. This isn't a jab but the more grounded armours are like wallpaper, they fit within the general aesthetic, you get a couple stand out helmets but otherwise people will choose em based on preference. Plenty of people hopped on the cat ears and that's fine if they think that's worth it, it's a stand out item. But I think they should occupy more of that higher price point for that reason (relative to the item type, not saying cat ears should cost more than hazop).

I'd say most of the Jorge gear and coatings for me. They're towards the end of the battlepass and are the closest they can come to the colour scheme i want, even though it's not perfect. Also I tend to stack challenge swaps so that I can steer the challenges in a way that I don't compromise the game modes I choose to play, but that's on me, not on the game, since I never have enough time in the week to do all of them.

I think the more prestigious/alluring customization are things that are earned like the HCS coatings from watching HCS matches, the campaign unlocks (some of which look pretty cool), and to a lesser degree, high-tier BP unlocks like the flame effects.

Closest we get to prestige is level 100 in the battle pass, besides that nope. heck no way to earn any piece of armor(freely at any time) outside of the battle pass.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I remember how cool it was to see samurai armor in Halo 3 cause it took work to get. Now, anyone can get quirky shit and not only that but most armor in the game is behind a pay wall with a FOMO shop that rotates weekly. It's annoying because I can't build the armor I want by PLAYING THE DAMN GAME! I have to shelling out cash for it when it comes into the store. Reach had the best system IMO. All the neat stuff, you had to bust your balls for and I loved the realistic armor with pouches and knives and stuff. You looked like a real commando.

They really need to add some achievement based unlocks like Halo 3. Imagine a new version of Vidmaster challenges. And THATS how you unlock master chiefs new Mark VII.

I feel like this problem would be a bit easier of a fix if they were to shift their free events to include realistic armor and the shop to have the quirky stuff on rare occasion for a higher price tag. That being said there is some armor customization that is slightly quirky and yet still embodied in realism like the Calling Card helmet add on and the Bandolier, and I think it would be good if there were say a tier list of all the current armor variants and their attachments to examine how well they fit in the halo aesthetic.

I posted this on the post you made for on your community tab but how do you feel about 343 using armor pieces in marketing and trailers when they aren’t even planning on releasing them for the season they marketed them for? -CQB Helmet which was shown quite a bit in trailers and is on the official season 1 cover artwork isn’t even in the game anymore -Jorge’s Grenadier shoulder isn’t an item in the game able to be used for a customized Spartan tho it was shown in Inside Infinites. -Gungnir shoulder used in the season 1 cover artwork isn’t available in the game at all either like the other 2 mentioned items above. Potentially even the remaining Reach items in this game that were made for season 1 and marketed for season 1 may be getting delayed to season 2 cause they got so much backlash.

I would say that the watchdog armour coating has some prestige, the problem is that it doesn’t look anything like what was advertised

Haven't spent a dime and don't ever plan to. My base Mk. VII body (no shoulder pads) with the base Mk. VII helmet, Vandal visor, and Nobel Portal coating is a modernized homage to the original S-II's that came before me.

I think the bigger issue for the future of the game is that there will be too much armor that all blends together, and that a lot of cool shit can be had just by paying money. Halo reach struck the best blend of any game I’ve seen where there was enough armor to customize your perfect Spartan, but little enough so that you knew what people did to unlock what they have and you had status symbols like you mentioned.

In week 2 the weekly reward was the Willow Tea armour coating. The challenge system hadn’t yet been changed so it was a hard coating to get. And having it be the first ever legit weekly, and an armour coating makes it rare. Anybody I see wearing it has my respect

As well customization has shown experience in the game in past Halos and MCC. New players usually had the base set and players who have spent time showed that thorough their mix and matching of unlockable armor.

You definitely hit the nail on the head. Completely agree. My most/the most prestigious cosmetic is the Mk.7 Helmet because it’s at the end of the battle pass, is realistic, and one of the few things that look good on the Mk.7 core.

The only unrealistic armours in halo before recent years was haunted helmet and the hyabusa armour But they were grounded in realism like Emile since you can see some guy carving his helmet or an ornamental set of samurai style armour to fit the current armour Never before were we in Skyrim or looking like a rave On halo infinite the only armour I wear is my reach armour that I’ve owned since 2011 since I’m not a fan of all that neon stuff

The current allure I see now is noticing some players have been able to run Jorge's Chest piece with it's proper colors despite it having not been fixed yet. I'm guessing some people figured out how to manipulate the menus to alter Jorge's armor kit to use other pieces....but it's that's all I have, where's the real allure?

When I was really young I played 3 and when I was in middle school I played reach and It was my favorite not because it necessarily had the best gameplay but because it was me, that spartan was me and everyone in that lobby talking and hanging out was also their own spartan. This game feels more like fortnight and like those who can't pay are just clowned on for being "default" and not having a ring above their head

I'm fine with some of the more grounded of the quirkiness that look like something the spartan would have done themselves. Look at Emile's mods as a grounded example. Something like the cat ears would theoretically be a grounded mod that a spartan might consider. I still think the samurai or ancient armor styles are currently out of place. The samurai style needs an appropriate style sword available to give it some grounding. Without an appropriate sword available, the samurai style is out of place.

Its a matter of meeting the tastes of everyone I dont use any of the unrealistic stuff but people like it But blocking it all behind paywall sucks, even worse when you cant even buy what you want when you want, I still want zvezda helmet, but they wont put it on the store again

I heard that the player base is shrinking immensely, I stepped away for a couple of weeks because I was bored too. Went back to play last night and got completely shit on. I feel like the only people playing at night now are insanely good. I'm honestly a pretty decent player too, I placed in Gold tier 5 in ranked when I played my first 10 ranked matches. It honestly made the game unenjoyable.

Restricted cores is the bane of customization. A response to the question is no, not even the sought after 152 skin from H5 has any real value now since they are willing to give it away to players just for watching an hour of tv (HCS). Back in Halo 3 I remember that unlocking all the armor was something to work for and when I got a full armory I knew the costs and time it took to get them. Now all I need is a full wallet and a good connection to the store and I will look exactly like the other guy with a full wallet. No variety or individuality at all. Not that it matters since there is no pre or post game lobby to admire your hard work or customization anyway

Just something that's off topic is how if ypu launch the game offline you can't customize your Spartans armor at all your forced to wear some short of basic armor and that's it
