The vehicle sandbox of Halo is one the franchises most unique elements; and few vehicles encapsulate the complex and interesting design of Halo as well as the Gauss Hog. But it's not because it's well balanced. In fact, it's the terrible overpowered nature of the Gauss that makes it one of the best vehicles to ever be in Halo, and it's removal in Halo Infinite is a representation of a major change in Halo, 20 years in the making. @@JeancarlosRPerez It did; the turret was basically the same as as the handheld launcher but with three barrels instead of two (and the only vehicular weapon that had to be reloaded after a certain number of shots that wasn't 1 and COULD be reloaded sooner). The hog itself also had a sweet paintjob; the Rhine skins among others that MCC added to other games is vaguely similar.

The Gauss Hog was balance by being effectively banned from standard play. It only showed up on non-standard forge maps and in Heavies, which is meant to be overpower vehicle chaos. The fun of the Gauss hog coms from fighting over it, not necessarily controlling it or fighting it. It removal from infinite kind of sums up my grievances with parts of the sandbox. Every decision seems to have been made in the name of making things fair/balanced rather than fun. It's ok to have extremely powerful items, just know when and where to put them.

Yes, but then you have the gauss hog on standoff heavy and the whole map became a not fun grind fest for who ever didn't control the spartan laser. I think the gaus hog was better balanced on a mode like warzone or btb super Fiesta, when you can pick up easily a counter to it, but you can also perform well with it

Whenever I play BTB heavies, I always go for the Spartan Laser to take out the enemy Gauss Hog so my teammates can have a good time

Precisely, it’s all about working as a team to take out the baddie that is wrecking your team. Whether that’s a tank, hog, banshee, etc. the problem is 343 insists on appeasing all the pro plebs that just wanna brrt brrt brrt around with their BRs 24/7 and bitch that the games unbalanced because they can’t 1v1 a tank with their BR and cat ears.

@@Vengong Nah. The BTB maps we have now are so tight that the Gauss Hog would be pretty easy to hijack...just like every other vehicle. And that's not even considering Disruptors, Skewers, plasma grenades, or grapple shots. The only really effective vehicles in Infinite are the Wasp and Banshee, and that's because you can go vertical and get out of range. The maps for both Infinite and H4 (I never played H5) are so small and tight with such predictable routes for vehicles that vehicles carry no where near the threat they were pre-H4.

The Gauss is the biggest double edged sword in the game. If you're behind the turret, it's the most fun you can have. If you're on the enemy team, it's an infinite rage generator.

One factor is that 343 removed almost all of the one-shotting from infinite, and the gauss hog is intrinsically one shot.

Imagine a sniper rifle style gauss replacement in Infinite, no zoom, marginal bloom, and a mix of the sniper and disruptor damage models, proppeling a dart that deals slightly more damage on hit than a sniper shot BUT briefly stuns a vehicle.

@@Woopor yeah. Mostly was just trying to figure out a combination of already in-game behaviors that could be mixed for a fun gauss-adjacent weapon. From what little I understand of the forge features it might even be something players could rig if 343 won't

Halo 4 perhaps was the most OP iteration. Only if the driver used the wheel man perk which adds additional armor as well as reducing EMP time and if the gunner had the gunner perk.

I went 40 and 1 in halo 4 the only reason I died was because I decided to get into the mantis right before the game ended and got board right away. It was so OPed that's probably why they removed the vehicle perks in mcc

I feel like in halo 5 it was the most balanced but that’s mainly because there were so many weapons in the sandbox that could destroy any vehicle and there’s advanced movement which made it hard for the gunner to get an accurate shot

Something I'd like to point out: the Gauss Hog led to the Splaser. The Gauss was an overpowered vehicle, and literally the only way you could stop a Gauss spree was with an overpowered anti vehicle weapon: the Splaser.

Plasma EMPs with a sticky fixed it very quickly or A bruteshot to flip it then nades Or regular frags if timed correctly Other vehicles Or rockets A hog gauss or not has plenty of counters Besides Lazer personally I don't see the point of the laser in halo it's just an op counter to a high power weapon in game play

I felt the gauss hog worked best in halo 5 as you had a chance to dodge the shot with thrusters making it more useful to catch an enemy or vehicle of guard rather than just full send into the enemy base get a killionare

The Gauss hog was absolutely busted in Halo Reach. Me and my friends have spent so long queuing Heavies just so we can dominate in it.

I always really liked the Gauss hog in campaign, but it and the scorpion made halo 3 BTB so not fun for me when I still queued for heavies, you either get stomped by it because the enemy team took your launchers and laser, or (I) 'misuse' it if I see one and now the enemy has such a huge advantage because they have the bigger boom

It's even more crazy when being used with PC on reach. Ask me how i know I think one thing that balances it is that it takes 2 people to use well, it gives it a high floor to use well

Not long after Reach came to PC I had a round of Heavies where I got on the Gauss maybe twice and ended the round with at least 35 points. I wasn't even tryharding, I was shooting the shit with people in voice chat the entire time. Didn't even notice till someone pointed it out

Best: Reach Stupid broken with its fast projectile velocity, wide red reticle values, and on Forge World maps, it can shoot through walls. Worst: Halo 2 This is the one iteration of the Gauss where I feel it has the least impact in BTB, but I don’t think it’s the weapon’s fault, more so the netcode. Travels less than a third of the velocity of the Reach Gauss, and it’s one of the factors that makes the hit detection online very inconsistent.

Also worth noting Halo 2's hitreg on Vista/MCC is pretty bad compared to the original, it's not as big a difference as Halo 3 MCC's was from it's original counter part, but it's worth noting in regards to Halo 2's hit registration.

Adding onto this, I personally think the H2A has the most unique gausshog, the fact alone that you have to charge up the shot for a second before firing I feel adds a bit more of a skill gap to timing shots and feels a bit less like a click to kill. Nonetheless it still pretty much shreds

I think the removal of the gauss hog represents how infinite removed the crazy and fun aspect of halo that comes with each installment. The balenced gameplay in infinite is fine and all but infintite as a whole is missing weapons that were all over the place. Bad weapons like the H3 spiker and the focus rifle and really OP weapons too both should have a place in infinite to create experiences not just for a fair game, but a fun one too.

Having the gauss canon require a chargeup that fires once it’s charged (to prevent charge storing, like the splaser, but faster) might do wonders toward balancing it with other medium vehicles and make it less of an easy kill factory. It would naturally limit the fire rate and add a component of skill and timing to use effectively

Yup but good luck with that in a game where the Banshee bomb is next to useless, the Scorpion cannon is literally hit scan, and a Shock rifle can EMP everything from acrossed the map in no time at all while simultaneously being able to one shot Spartans. Balance. 🤣

Most people don't know that the original gause hog in Halo 2 had a small charge up before it'd fire, this was sadly lost from Halo 3 onward

Tank does be Gauss...if you can hit it. It takes 2-3 shots for Gauss to beat a Scorpion. A near miss with a Scorpion can flip a Gauss.

@@samuelzuleger5134 PC gets the advantage of mouse/crosshair speed lock being turned off, so those shots are 100% easier to land. Tank can wipe out anything when it doesn't turn slow, the one balance debuff it had going for it lol

Yeah Banshee has always been garbage as long as Scorpion/Guass hog exist in the same match. Honestly the Banshee should be able to two shot the Scorpion with how fragile the damn thing is but alas...

I'm a good driver and the gauss hog allows me to give my killing potential to another player. I just have to focus on driving and watching the gunners shields. I have never gotten a killionaire and only 1 extermination, but I have led others to this treasure I cannot possess via my driving.

The Gauss Warthog was the reason why I got my first Invincible in a Halo game. Specifically Halo 3. I’ll never forget that moment getting that medal on BTB heavies on Sandbox.

Could you imagine a gauss hog on behemoth 🤣. Halo 3 had the strongest gauss hog because you can't counter it consistently with anything but the spartan laser. I love the gauss and rail gun, but instant death is hard to play around.

I think the version of the gauss hog that required a brief charge up could still work in Infinite. Especially with the shock rifle and skewer as counters.

In my opinion Guass hog should be reworked as a 2 step firing mechanism, first step is a quick trigger pull for a quick but weak shots that might take 2 hits to kill a spartan and 4 shots for vehicles; and now the second step would be a 3-4 second charge by holding the trigger in order to have the single shot kill for Spartans and a 2 fully charged shot for vehicles.🤔

A great way to re-introduce the G-Hog into Halo: Infinite would be to split it into 2 new variants: The Spark Hog, a Hog with an oversize Shock Rifle on top. It would cycle much slower than a Shock Rifle, but the trigger could be held down for prolonged bursts and it would become a great way to clear infantry from around a tank (with the chaining bolts). This solves the issue of an instakill light vehicle. The Blast Hog, a Hog with a Hard-Light cannon on top that fires deaccelerating, but very girthy bouncing balls of instakill. It would obviously pass through enemies and could maybe deal splash damage around every bounce. This variant maintains the instakill fantasy, while making the variant much more skill-dependent with the projectiles loosing speed mid-flight and allowing experienced players to dodge those shots, given they are paying attention. You could also add a mechanic where bouncing increases projectile speed, allowing for trickshots that actually benefint the player.

Perhaps it should of been replaced with a rail gun hog. You would charge it up and could only hold the charge for a few seconds. Maybe give it the targeting laser like in H2A multiplayer.

@@evanceier8577 gauss rifles are coil guns which arent the same as rail guns.I would change it to a rail gun because it behaves like the halo 4/5 rail gun. Also the halo2-4 style gauss hog turret had a lot of defense compared to the regular hog turret due to its large size which would block bullets. The rail hog turret would be similar to the halo 5 gauss turret in profile (nerfing the defense) and act like a railgun (nerfing offense)

Halo 3 gauss would probably the best one due to the fact that a sniper can’t really damage it. The worst one for me would be Halo 4 since it feels harder to aim. You spartans have a legendary bless and heads up high. God bless

I haven't played H5 but in my experience, Gauss performed best in Reach due to its rate of Fire and it easy-to-use reticle, performed worst in H4 due to it's hard-to-use reticle, reduced rate of Fire, and the hog being made of paper mache, along with every other vehicle in H4

We were pinned down trying to push towards the enemy Elephant. They had a banshee in the air and a scorpion closing in on us. Suddenly I saw a brilliant glowing beam shoot into the sky and nail the banshee. A few more followed and the purple aircraft exoloded. The gauss hog arrived. The tank focused on the hog which gave me a chance to finally use my laser. I melted the tank with it. The gauss hog swung around and stopped a few feet away, honking at me to get in. I love BTB Heavies

I feel like the gauss was it's best back in reach. But that's because of reach's more open warfare style gameplay with many vehicles and large open areas. I feel that's something that reach did best. And really hasn't been back since. With how weak vehicles are in infinite it would be hard to see it fit in property. Having to have some kind of balanceing

The only thing that was incorrect was what you said at 2:09 - The Gauss Hog was not the first Warthog variant at release. There was the Rocket Hog which came with Halo PC's multiplayer that was done by Gearbox back in 2003.

Oni Gauss Hog in Halo 5 was stupid powerful but so fun to use in Warzone and Firefight. That sandbox is ridiculously fun overall.

I always like the gauss hog as a sort if “golden warthog” in a party game sort of way. the warthog is probably the most iconic vehicle, so the gauss was like a crown on top of that title.

Driving the warthog and other variants is one of my favorite things to do in Halo and unfortunately they really nerfed the vehicles in Infinite pretty bad. The warthog on Behemoth can sometimes be worth grabbing but on BTB it’s usually just a death trap which really sucks. Besides HighPower, the BTB maps are really bad for Vehicle traversing. Outside of the defined paths, you are extremely vulnerable in a vehicle. It just makes it so much less fun to actually grab a vehicle. Teamwork should be rewarded and if you have 2 guys paired up to take down the other team, there should be more incentive to grab a vehicle. In this version of BTB so far, there’s not. They also still haven’t found great utility for the passenger seat in the warthog. There should be a role for the passenger in Slayer to take this seat and be effective. One idea would be that they could control some kind of weapon mounted to the front of the hog. Either a projectile weapon or have some kind of hydraulic powered aggressive front bumper rhino bar that would pop out and hit anyone or anything directly in front of the vehicle. Kind of like the stomp for the Mantis, but it would only be accessible from the passenger seat. Brutehog. That would make loading up the hog so much more fun!

The Gauss Hog served as a means for the average player to be able to gain control of as well as being able to survive longer than the average powerful vehicle. With a tank for example, its low mobility and easy weak points made its lifespan affect how a tank can be used. If you want your tank to survive, you're gonna have to sit in the back with it, which kinda defeats the point of a tank compared to how they are used irl. With gauss hogs, its mobility allows multiple teammates in the gausshog allows for it drive easily in and out of enemy territory, while it still maintains its lower health. This can allow for it to be easily lasered, or for the driver/gunner to be shot out of. Gausshogs are much more powerful than their counterparts, but its threat made for some of the most interesting gameplay. Even just fighting for the gausshog made me feel like I was in the trenches of WW1, spartans slugging at each other just for the opportunity of obtaining the gausshog. Infinite's removal of the gausshog is just another criticism of the overall weapon sandbox of infinite. Infinite gives up unbalanced/interesting weapons for the sake of mundane/balanced gun play, where (almost) every weapon, although viable, becomes boring. Not every weapon in a Halo game needs to be super balanced. There are other halo games, like Reach, which maintained a varied sandbox with interesting mechanics in every single one of them, even the guns that you probably wouldn't use in a ranked match. Games are meant to be fun and entertaining, not a sweatfest for competitiveness.

NEXT VIDEO IDEA: The comparison between original Halo map architecture and it's development with the introduction of 343. Look at the walls and walkways while recognizing the pure airspace around & within each of those great maps (Halo CE,2,3 +/- Reach). Now compare that to the very arcady, close quarters, shoulder to shoulder hallways. Which 343 has repurposed as "Maps". Is it really a quality & true MAP if every pixel was designed specifically with armed combat scenarios in mind? Now imagine every play space & pixel within that military scenario being called a "map", had also been constructed with the concept of fair gameplay in mind.

Now, see, if the Gauss Hog were treated with the reverence it deserves, it'd be that vehicle that "sits nicely between the Scorpion and the Warthog" as 343 put their own Razorback. If I were to be put in charge of the vehicle sandbox, I'd probably enforce "vehicle roles" in the same way one might enforce "weapon roles," which is exactly what 343i attempted with weapons. That would mean making room for "medium" vehicles that serve their own purpose in the sandbox alongside mainstays like the Hog and Tank. And I don't mean something like the Razorback. To answer the question of the video, though, the Gauss Hog undeniably performed best in Halo 2 and 3, with Halo 5 possibly being where it underperformed the most simply due to what modes it was utilized in, which included Warzone, where keeping a vehicle alive in the first place is a feat in of itself. H2A MP is another contender for worst performance, mostly due to the change to how the weapon fired at all.

Literally the only problem with the gauss was swatting down aerial vehicles. But in the case of reach it didn't matter as everybody started with a SAM turret in their arms.

I'm wondering whether or not the Gauss Hog would have been better for players to go up against if the Gauss Cannon had a charge time, like Halo 4's Railgun or Reach's Mass Driver, rather than being able to put out shots instantly. Then again, I personally feel that finally taking it out in favour of a CE/Infinite style RocketHog was an improvement; giving the Warthogs a dynamic of being either more Anti-Infantry or Anti-Vehicle.

i think an good change to the gauss that may nerf it enough but still be good, make the gauss require to charge power before firing and depending on how long you charge it, it would have decreased damage until full charge… then its the monster we cower from

343 should bring back the Mantis, Guass and Falcon when forge drops but make the Guass have a charge up time with a laser indicator so it's more balanced.

While l don’t want thr Guass Hog back, l think its a cool idea to put a Gauss Turret in the center of a map so teams can basically fight for it. Adds a little strategy that if someone on the enemy team is on the turret, you gotta decide to avoid it, kill the player and take the turret or destroy the player and turret while losing the turret’s potentially infinite ammo supply

What if players spawned in a vehicle? As an example, let’s say three players are killed within a given time. When they respawn instead of respawning like normal they respawn in a vehicle like the Gauss.

This is saddening. 343 has made it CoD. Part of Halo's magic was the ridiculousness in the balancing that somehow worked. I mean look at Sniper rifles, plasma swords, grav hammers, rocket launchers, the power ups, the CE pistol, DMR. I could go on and on. Most of the things in Halo were stupidly overpowered to the point where it balanced everything out, which in turn caused for some insanity (shit blowing up, bodies flying across the map, being killed by objects thrown across the map, and other ridiculous things). The Gauss was the pinnacle of how ridiculous something can be and useful, but with a weakness too (I mean, let's be real, hogs are weak light vehicles, so of course Bungie would stick a ridiculously OP weapon atop of it).

To answer the end of video question: The Gauss Hog was the best in H3, and worst in H4...because of maps. H3 maps were open (like Sandtrap), allowing for the relative higher speed and long-range precision of the Gauss Hog to shine. H4 maps were tight, narrow, and constricting, by comparison, plus players got plasma 'nades at start so... THIS is why we need BTB Heavies and BTB Heavies-designed maps in Infinite. The BTB maps we have now are fine, but they do not play to heavy (or really any) vehicles. They are too narrow and constricting for the longer range, higher mobility, and higher firepower of just about any vehicle other than the mongoose or gungoose. Even the vaunted Scorpion and Wraith require (yes, REQUIRE) infantry support, otherwise infantry jumping out of a rock can get the kill. This is hurt by the fact that vehicles are restricted to very specific and predictable routes. When you hear the drop incoming, you can just pick up a skewer (or other option) and sit on in ideal position to intercept. If you are going to introduce vehicles, you need to give them some freedom and openness to move, otherwise a grapple shot and power weapon are actually a better option. Part of the fun of Heavies was that they "unbalanced" the normal gameplay and required new ways of play. I personally think that 343i has failed Halo's vehicle sandbox from the start. They focused so much on INFANTRY BALANCE that they nerfed vehicles (either by changing elements of them or by changing the maps) to the point of being nearly useless. I have played H4 BTB heavies matches where Scorpions and Banshees have just sat there unused. I feel like 343i is somehow afraid that over-powered vehicles will "ruin" the game when, in reality, they enhance it. Also, there are two weaknesses to the Gauss Hog: 1. despite having some armor, the driver and gunner are still exposed to gunfire, at least compared to the real heavies and 2. the Gauss Hog requires a two-man team. A bad driver means you get killed quick and never get ideal shots while a bad gunner means you never get kills. I have seen games where Gauss Hogs rack up the kills and where they do nothing depending entirely on the driver/gunner combo (I, personally, was a better driver...thanks largely to way too much time playing "The Maw" and H3's "Halo").

Your explanation goes right along with Infinite being geared towards allowing any player regardless of skill stay competitive so they will increase the player base, selling more cosmetics. Mad about the gauss driving around, snipe the driver, plasma pistol the vehicle, hide in its path and stick it as it goes by, or just use the BR and headshot the drive or gunner. But no, this game is based around the spray and pray of the AR.

Not really sure which games had the worst or the best Gauss Hog but it was probably easier to encounter and destroy in the newer games due to the additions to gameplay. Like killing a gauss hog in Halo 5 would've been easier then in Halo 2

I mean, broken? I don’t know,…if you’re fast enough you can entirely negate such a platform. It’s so slow that you can technically corner it,especially if the diver and the gunner are not on the same page, which happens more often then not.
