The unexpected car problem F1 teams are battling in pre-season testing

THE RACE

2 жыл бұрын

Modern F1 teams are always super-prepared for a new season, even in a year like 2022 where the cars are designed to brand new rules. But there was one element that proved very difficult to simulate ahead of the cars running on the track for real.
The problem is known as porpoising. And it is a phenomenon that was a problem during F1’s last ground effect era in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At its worst, it can result in damage to the floor and give the drivers a big headache.
Some teams have struggled with porpoising and its variants during pre-season testing in Barcelona. So what exactly is causing it, why is it so hard to detect and how can teams solve their problems?

The Venturi tunnels coming back is probably the most overlooked thing. Yes it caused the Lotus to become unstable but the downforce was absolutely and ridiculously amazing. I'm so glad to see them back.
@michaelperry9180
@michaelperry9180 2 жыл бұрын
I think the new Venturi tunnels are meant to be much more stable. The skirts used to seal the floor on the old cars were attached to the bodywork so if the car lifted, the seal would break and they’d lose downforce immediately. I believe the new cars are using vortices to seal the floor (genius) which is much more consistent/predictable.

To counter this, teams would use smart actuating damping and aero either passive or active but that's all banned so teams will have to find other ways, the team that does the best job will yield big. I wonder if we'll see a complete fresh drawing board approach from some teams in the future, that focuses on neutralising this.

Just proof that when suspensions and down force creation are adjusted at the limits of car performance, trade-offs exist. I'm sure everyone in F1 knew about this (at least in theory) , but simulations can only simulate so much (because simulations only express what we KNOW, not what is REAL). No matter how good a sim is, you only really know by real world testing and experimentation. This is true for ANY simulation of ANY real world system. Better data in, better data out.. but it will never be perfect.

Was it really unexpected? The same issue occurred in the 80/90s, when underfloor downforce increases, meant teams ran ultra hard springs, affecting driver comfort in a big way. Active suspension was the solution, until politics banned it. This might ruin the 2022 season, as the first team to solve this issue, while still using all their available downforce is going to Brawn the season.

@Gatotsu2009
@Gatotsu2009 2 жыл бұрын
There are 2 simple solutions to this problem. One is to stiff the suspension but that will make the car bounce in even the smallest bump and avoid the best racing line in slow corners (therefore losing time). The other way will be to reduce DWF (downforce) but again that will make cars slower in the corners. Until last years the teams could run very complex suspension systems (hydraulic systems, inerters, etc.) due to this is hard to control the bouncing like before. You cant replicate this problem in wind tunnels because regulations only allow them to run at 180 km/h.

In the video, you described porpoising is the wave motion as the porpoise skips in and out of the water. In actuality, porpoising is called that because of how porpoises propel themselves through the water. Porpoises (and whales) use an up and down motion with their tail fins and bodies, where as fish use a side to side motion. Which, is also where we get the term Fishtailing.
@CouriersLondon
@CouriersLondon 2 жыл бұрын
...and to help clarify matters further, Porpoises actually stole their movement from the world of break dancing. wrong! skirts maintains the seal of airflow which increases the downforce. which in fact increase porpoising. the more you push the car to the ground the more chance you have to bottom out and create the porpoising. the solutions are titanium blocks to keep the car at a minimum height or active suspensions. because with the raising of ride height, they will lose downforce on slow corners. considering the weight of these cars, it will be very slow in slow corners. not sure it's what they want.

I've been commenting on this since before the launch of the new cars, and why ground effect was banned in the first place. When the air stalls the car loses downforce and then can not perform in a uniform way. That is on entry to a corner after a straight and cutting across the track the following cars air stalls and suddenly there is no downforce. Rather than being able to overtake that car is forced off track by not being able to retard the speed as there is not the expected braking available as seen in the previous ground effect era. Ground effect can only be safely used with active suspension.

It seems to me that, similar to the roof and hood flaps in NASCAR, small flaps could be added to the rear floor pans, when the pressure or "suction" overcomes a spring or valve. Before the rear can drop too far, the flaps briefly open.

hanging on to the above question, could bump stops solve the issue - only allowing the rear of the car to drop to a certain height and then no further. Once you know at what point the ground effect stalls, just put the bump stops 1-2mm above this and it should solve the issue. I'm not an aero engineer by any standards, and happy to hear differing opinions.

On top of that a more uncomfortable ride with stiffer suspension, especially on street circuits. It’s a delicate balance that has to be considered depending on the circuit. Mass dampers or active suspension can also help a bit but both are banned.

@@FTWGame0N The heave springs are the active component when both sides of the car change height in the same direction at the same time, to my understanding. @@KirbyCharkra yes, the DRS conversation is long. Referencing the initial comment “DRS everywhere at anytime” I don’t think this will ever happen I do think you have a somewhat feasible alternative. @@Murciielago yeah I vibe more with my second idea. I would like to see more strategic options on race day. It's true drs makes it artificial, and needs to be improved on. Who knows if drs all time would really be that much more unsafe. I can imagine some wild dive bombs... But again who knows, it's obviously better to have grip in the corner, so the drivers will use it as much as they use the brakes. End point, I can't wait for next regs to focus on smaller cars and combative driving.

Can teams use a moveable element similar to DRS on their floors that allows air to move more freely while on straights? This seems like an easy solution but probably not within regulations.
@annahenrietta9517
@annahenrietta9517 2 жыл бұрын
Quickfix solutions would be adding bumpstops to limit maximum compression of the car, adjustable on a per track basis to maximise performance. Or a rebound damper to control the upwards motion once the floor stalls. That however can lead to an excessively rigid behaviour from the chassis and threaten mechanical grip loss. It's gonna be very interesting to see how the teams will deal with the issue. Especially since with the rnd cap they cannot just sacrifice floors galore for maximum performance.

Is increasing the stiffness of the last bit of the suspension an option? / Increasing the bumpstop / or make a really stiff little spring that is slightly larger than the current bumpstop when fully compressed / or maybe add a plate at the end of the internal dampening which compresses the fluid harder when fully compressed which can dampened the bump with fluid at a higher point

I am not surprised with the porpoising effect making a return. Pitch sensitivity along with porpoising occur when racing cars generate a majority of the downforce from underfloor aerodynamics, specifically venturi tunnels. Since venturi tunnels require a flat plane for maximum effect, incorporating rake would reduce the overall efficiency and therefore negative pressure crated. As stated by others, the porpoising effect was the catalyst for R&D and eventual implementation of active suspension in F1 cars. Since the new regulations have banned inerters, heave springs and the FRIC (Front and Rear Interconnected Circuit) suspension system used by Mercedes-AMG F1 in previous cars until it was banned. The only option available is a combination of suspension setup and underfloor tuning.

So feathering the floor rather than a single solid floor area to reduce the suck , or if you have a vacuum cleaner there the little flap at the top of the handle has little circular holes which reduce the vacuum pressure when you roll over rugs on a hard floor so you don't suck it up , so if they can vary the pressure with a little flap and various holes they can reduce the pressure build up to be more controlled
