Interesting topic but both cars could do with modifying to improve performance. The older car if you took the magnet out and add weight and new tyres would be a lot more driveable. It would be interesting to see how close it could be to the other car with mods. I find the older cars with mods still very quick. Love the comparison video. Magnets can decrease performance in breaking and make cars jolt and twitch, magnet racing in 1/32 is not my thing, HO I think it works.

I left slot car racing, in the late 1960's because I couldn't keep up with building a new chassis and buying a competitive motor to compete. Simply too expensive, and too time consuming. Much like real life. Today's 'wing' cars in 1/24 are an example. resemble nothing in prototype at all. I can't even see those wing cars lapping the track in a fraction of a second. I was in my teens, and decided to go to real cars, not expecting the astronomical costs of real life racing. Eventually, I just gave up, not having the money to compete with the guys who had sponsors to supplement their costs. Slot cars are now just to enjoy reminiscing the past. As always, current day slot cars have gone in a new direction, with 1/64th cars racing on 1/87 track which is absurd. But I still enjoy racing around on my 4 lane track , skipping a lane to avoid the constant banging of two cars together because of poor design decisions, racing the wrong size cars on the wrong size tracks.
