When Secretariat settled in behind Kennedy Road, it reminded me of a cat playing with a mouse before deciding to end things. Just as in the Preakness once Secretariat decided to go, the race was quickly over. His top end speed was just so much faster than the rest of the field. The greatest racehorse of all time. STILL holds all three triple crown race records 51 years later. Incredible.

I don't know about that. The Great Sham was just as fast. He busted out his two front teeth coming out of the gate at the derby and ran the entire race with swollen nasal passages from the blow and Secretariat couldn't shake him. I believe The Great Sham would have beaten him. Unfortunately, we will never know how the Belmont would have turned out if Sham had not have been running with a hairline fracture in his left front lower leg. You can actually see his legs splay just a fraction of a second before Secretariat pulled away. He was every bit as good as Secretariat. Just bad luck.

@@JackelinHydewhat excuse do you have for Sham in the Preakness? Three races, three losses. Fractured a leg trying to push Secretariat at Belmont. I understand how good the stats are for Sham. I’ve always found it interesting that the two largest hearts ever measured in horses were Secretariat followed by Sham. Just the way they finished all three races against each other. By any measure, I just can’t see how Sham was every bit as good as Secretariat. Three races three loses doesn’t equate to “every bit as good”.
@Postinaway
@Postinaway Ай бұрын
@JackelinHyde Sorry, I love Sham. He was a great horse, and a worthy opponent. But I have never bought the bit about the hairline fracture in the Belmont. Based on how those two were running, Sham would not have finished the race and in fact would probably have pulled a Barbaro (crosses self) if anything had cracked during that stretch run. Sham had great early speed, and he also surpassed Northern Dancer's 9-year record in the Derby. I think Team Sham formulated a strategy based on the horses' performance in the Preakness, figuring that the smaller the field, the more likely Secretariat was to go to the front immediately and burn himself out (cf Smarty Jones in the Belmont, where Jerry Bailey and Russell Baze sacrificed their own horses to deny Smarty the Triple Crown) (Yes. I'm still bitter. I lost 20 bucks!). Laffit Pincay is clearly holding Sham's head during the stretch duel, while Turcotte has been ordered to let his steed decide how he wants to run. When Secretariat simply left Sham instead of collapsing, Pincay implemented part B of the plan, feign injury and let Sham valiantly finish last. That preserved Sham's value as a stud. What they hadn't counted on was the massive, literal mutant engine pounding inside Big Red's oversized chest. Both Sham and Secretariat were maternal grandson of Princequillo, who brought the largest of the large X Factor hearts to America. That day at the Belmont, the two largest thoroughbred hearts on record went beat to beat, and the 22 pounder won over the 18 pounder.

Secretariat had the most beautiful stride I've ever seen.
@Postinaway
@Postinaway 2 ай бұрын
At the beginning it was like he's thinking, "This is a track?! I should be eating this track!" Then as he went by the stands he seemed to get his footing and say, "Yeah, ok, I guess I can run on this!" The stride suddenly lengthened. He went from looking like a horse running to looking like one leaping again and again and again, Superman swooping low across the turf. "Well sorry... what did they say your name was...?! Oh right! Kennedy Road. Byeeeee!" *VOOM* Kudos for the music choice and editing. As if this race needed any more drama, with Ron projecting himself into Eddie Maple's saddle and Arcaro's expert, unabashed fandom of the big red locomotive barreling down the stretch, vanishing into silhouette against the lights, the ecstatic crowd, the epic race call... a fitting end to SecretariGOAT's career!

I urge fans of Big Red to read Andy Beyer’s 1975 “Picking Winners” to learn the fundamentals behind speed ratings & track variants. Later in the book Andy devotes a chapter to his work going back to ‘73 and constructing figs for Secretariat overall and the Belmont in particular. The grounding in the mathematical concepts helps you see as Andy did just how remarkable Big Red really was.

It's Protectors of the Earth by Two Steps from Hell. In particular, it's written by Thomas Bergersen. He's one of the most talented current composers in the world. If you don't like his music, you just have horrible taste.

My god, cut that awful music out. It detracts from the race! In other news, yes Secretariat was one of the best, but Man O’War was the GOAT

Wrong. Stop trolling. You never saw MOW race because there is NO film of him running except against an over-the-hill Sir Barton. Secretariat was a genetic freak and way better than MOW.

NOT the greatest horse ever, even though he was magnificent, the greatest has to go to FRANKEL, the speed could never be matched in his 14 undefeated races, I will NEVER EVER forget what I would witness at Newmarket in the 2.000 Guineas, Frankel was 15 lengths clear of the field which was full of group 1 winners and ABSOLUTELY coasted home in a canter, then came the phenomenal Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, 11 lengths, and many more races, the Frankel Breedings have since been ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
