Pokemon Competitive Singles has seen the triumphant return of many Pokemon from past Generations thanks to Pokemon Home. Mew, the original Mythical Pokemon, has unfortunately been having a rough time in the new Generation. With a huge amount of moveset cuts in the new games, Mew has lot many of its most important options that were keeping it afloat, including all of its healing moves, Defog, and even Knock Off.
This is Mew's lowest point in the entire series. What the heck!
Iron Mugulis and Iron Fellow know all about it.
Only Jim knows about the viability of Mew. All other sources of information are liars and are inaccurate.

Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.

Yes!!! Mew's Movepool should only Expand! Now if moves are removed fine. But Softboiled is still in the game (If Chansey is in, then Softboileds there too)

Mew can still learn any move via TM or tutors, but in SV's base game, there are no move tutors, and the only reason Mew "lost" moves is because there's no TMs for the moves in question.

Meganium and Tropius and are indeterminate eusauropods, but Tropius has bit of a titanosaur-like posture, Aurorus is an amargasaur and and Raging-Thunder/Great-Neck is a brontosaur in concept with a bit of giraffatitan/brachiosaurus for the physical characteristics. Not all sauropods are brachiosaurs, lol. X^)

mew has always learned every TM move. The moves it lost are the TMs they don't have in gen 9. and for some reason, they put barely any tms in the game

i don't think mew being nerfed was intentional. transfer moves haven't been legal for several years in game freak's formats and gen 9 just made it so you can't even have them outside of their formats, so mew's huge accumulated movepool of 8 gens worth of tms and tutor moves was completely wiped away in gen 9

The biggest thing that I feel is holding Mew back nowadays is its ability. Synchronize is a very passive, usually luck based ability that, depending on your team comp, might only ever proc once throughout the entire match. The same problem of having a barely present ability also affects its successor, Mewtwo, though to a lesser extent (Outside of mega evolution formats, Mewtwo barely keeps above the line of "OUBL," which is 4.52% Ubers usage rate - but at least it is able to often push above that line, while Mew consistently falls to UU even with its usual moveset options). Giving it at least a slightly more useful ability would help it keep up with the modern OU power level, like, I don't know, look at all the abilities they slap on other Psychic mons: Competitive, Trace, Serene Grace, or even Levitate. _Or,_ if they really want to push it back to near Ubers level of power like they always advertise for it, giving it a bonkers ability like Magic Bounce or Magic Guard would do just that. Come the DLC and the assumed reintroduction of move tutors, Mew will probably go back to being UU level and having a comfortable niche in OU. But I always feel weird seeing it just be a non-threat in OU teams when every Pokemon material ever made apart from the main series games tries to convince you that Mew is at least comparable in power to its steroid infused child.

I feel it worth mentioning that Mew not retaining soft-boiled and roost is because there's no tutors / tms for either of those moves. The last time soft-boiled was a tutor move was back in generation 3, and the last time roost was a tm was back in generation 7. I'm not defending the decision, rather explaining that it's been a while since Mew got either of these moves, and we're only feeling the effects now because of the HOME changes

Only played on emulators. If Mew retained those moves across gens, it can bring them over to newer games as long as the moves wasn't deleted from the game (example Scald), right?

@@nunyabiznes33yes before if you moved a pokemon up through the gens it kept all of its moves, even if there was no way to get that move on it in a more current game. But that's not the case anymore, so even those special distribution event pokemon with special moves don't get to keep them.

I think the craziest thing about Mew being nerfed and losing moves in Gen 9 is the fact that it's not even allowed in VGC formats as it's a Mythical Pokemon, meaning that it has 0 impact on that format making the nerfs seem incredibly harsh. Also why doesn't Mew learn Recover via level up? It makes sense that it no longer has access to Soft-Boiled but it should have some form of reliable recovery outside of Leftovers to compensate for that.

Mew's gimmick was learning every TM and tutor, and that's what it still is. It's just that, for BDSP and onwards, Pokémon movesets must now match the game they're in, so all leftover transfer-only moves from the past 20-ish years for TMs and tutors that didn't exist anymore became truly unavailable.

Most moveset cuts this gen are a result of two factors: Completely redone TMs and no move tutors Pokemon that could previously only get moves by tm or tutor (like roost was for so many pokemon) just can't get them anymore And this is the first gen where pokemon cannot take their old moves with them, they get reset on transfer Mew is a pokemon that can learn any TM and move tutor move But there are no tutors and the TM roster was entirely changed And Mew can't even carry over the moves from previous gens It seems like Mew's nerf was just incidental. Not intentional for either format, just something that happened as a result of these changes stacking together. Its a similar story for most pokemon but ESPECIALLY Mew

Mew should've kept all its moves, just make them move relearner-only. Giratina got to keep Defog as a level up move, so why not the 'mon that can learn every move? On that note, they should've given it Crabhammer

I for one, think that Great Neck is being wrongly persecuted, and that the giraffe community should learn to better accept him. Great Neck is a completely gentle and peace-loving guy, and may very well help us in our fight against the neck-farious Iron Mugulis, by virtue of its quad resistance to the evil Mug's Electric moves.

I understand all Pokemon needed to lose transfer moves, which haven’t been legal in official formats since Gen 6 anyway. But Mew should have gotten Recover as a natural move. Maybe even give it a new signature move since it’s Z move got cut. Idea: Genesis Mist 70 BP Psychic move that eliminates stat changes and hazards. It’d give Mew a niche as a hazard remover against Goldehngo and bring back Mew’s utility.

Even the Iron Defense set can be better done by Galarian Slowbro, which also gets it and is naturally immune to poison and has regenerator. It can even do it on the physical side too with Curse and Amenesia as well as Calm Mind + Iron Defense.

@@minmin8580 Outclassed in Ubers yes but it's never dropped out of it either. Mew dropped in Gen 5 and stayed below Ubers ever since. Mewtwo dropping out of Ubers would be as big of a shock as T-tar dropping out of OU.

I‘d expect it to bounce back to uu, that massive shift dragged down some mons that should be uu. The dlc hopefully brings defog back as a tm/tutor move, currently all mons learn defog via breeding (braviary is the only mon that learns it naturally afaik). I can’t wait to see movepool expansions with the dlc, hazard removal is in shambles across so many tiers.

The loss of generational moveset transfer is honestly really disappointing as it is the defining feature of the Pokemon series that makes teambuilding so unique, especially in gen 8. Seeing all of these options that a Pokemon accumulated over the years be uninhibited by Hidden Ability or Egg moves was such a joy to experience last gen. Honestly, I'd be much more OK with them nerfing or even entirely removing moves like Scald and Knock Off in order to keep the connectivity high because it reminds me a bit too much of set rotation, which is the reason I left the TCG

I totally agree with you. The weirdest thing about Mew is that its whole gimmick was that it learns everything. Period. That's what Mew is. I understand that too many pokemon had certain moves, but Mew should keep them. It's not like it was misusing them to be broken or anything, and having some more options in the competitive scene is nice. It's not like Mew is even usable in VGC so why bother cutting its moves to begin with? I do not understand.

Those removed moves were legacy transfer moves that are very hard to get in real cartridge, you need to own several old consoles and games and sometimes old event pokemons or key items impossible to get now, to get a legal Soft-Boiled Mew in gen 8 without using glitches, you need an event Mew from like 2005 that was only distributed in few countries teach it Soft-Boiled in gen 3 and transfer from generation to generation up to gen 8. Allowing those moves in showdown really didn't represent the experience you get when you play on cartridge, which is the purpose of the simulator in the first place. Mew can still learn every TM in the game, 171 in total and probably any new move tutor or tm from the upcoming DLC, is just that a lot of the current TM status moves are not that useful in singles.

(I havent watched the full vid yet so correct me if im wrong or already appeared on the vid)i think what made mew fall so hard was the removal of Alot of moves he learned,i dont remember much now but in gen 8 some people were bambling about it and also other mons like the lake trio,which of course has lower base stats but haves much more variety in its moveset.(and also power creep of course and meta mons like tyranitar,roaring moon now on gen 9, kingambit,and more....)

I don't think Great Neck will have a problem with the other giraffe Pokemon since it isn't one in the first place (what giraffe doesn't have hooves? smh). As another sauropod Pokemon, I'm sure they'd be thrilled to have a potentially viable member in a mainline tier.

So it looks like Mew wasn't targeted specifically, as it still has its gimmick of learning every TM move. The big thing was that the TM movepool was altered significantly, and its level up moveset has barely changed since gen 4. Well, it has changed slightly in kinda bizarre ways (went from psychic at 30 in gen 7 to psychic at 100 in gen 8?????), but the overall effect of the level up moveset for competitive purposes hasn't really changed. Mew not being able to have any sort of immediate healing aside from life dew is a travesty. This thing should always have some sort of softboiled or recover at the very least. I get the removal of a whole lot of moves from the game, but Mew's entire thing is moveset diversity with all around stats that can fill any role, so its a shame it can't do that anymore. Also, synchonize is a bit of an outdated ability. What do you think of this idea? Mew gets a new hidden ability that gives it a fifth moveslot. Nothing else, just the ability to carry five moves. Good idea or terrible idea?

You may think that the cut movements affect mew greatly, and it does, but in Nat Nax, even with recovery, knock, toxic, defog, is in RUBL, simply 9 generations are too many to always shine, it happened to Tytar, it happens to mew

I wanted to build a Cosmic Power Mew since I had never done it before, so as soon as I got him in Scarlet, I pumped him full of vitamins I had to make it. Each vitamin costs 10,000 dollars and only after I gave him like 20 of them, did I realize he doesn't even have access to Roost and Cosmic Power anymore, not even through the Mirror Herb. I'm gonna wait for the DLC to see if new TMs can salvage the stats build before I try to undo the stat distribution.

Mew is still a top tier pick for doubles though. Talking of support moves flexibility he is second only to smeargle but carrying far superior bulk and speed. He can set up both tailwind and trickroom, imprison foes to avoid them using those or to set up a deadly transform/imprison combo, fake out and much more. It can also fills unique niches thanks to its enormous movepool. Not a boy to sleep on. The only problem is it's not available rn in vgc

@@AdminAbuse in gen8doubles OU he was dominating. I personally used it to rank the ladder and get into top 10 with the transform imprison strat, obviously supported by a solid team, and performed exceptionally well. It can virtually stop any pokemon with this two move combo and on top of that he still has two super flexible slots.

Mew is still good in Doubles OU despite losing Fake Out as it compresses Tailwind or Trick Room and entry hazards neatly and can take advantage of Covert Cloak. In other words, yup.

mew has and probably never will be legal in an official vgc circuit (no, series 13 swsh doesn't count) due to its mythical status, so GameFreak nerfed it for no reason
