The Creality CR-X 3d printer has some new features that make it quite interesting to work with, especially the added second extruder for dual extruder capabilities.
HOWEVER - the machine sadly lacks much quality control, and the machine I have is different than what was announced, and most likely different than the machine you would receive.
How am I suppose to do a review on that? Simple - I won't be.

Yeah, I've said all this on WeChat multiple times but something is not clicking with them. It's 7:30am here, I've got to get dressed and do my makeup but then I'm going over to the factory and just make a nuisance of myself until I get some answers😡

Hope they finally understand where their interest is. They need to be honest with testers. And since they decided to go on the route of externalized testing like in software industry, maybe they should do the same and offer bug bounties to reward testers.

And Naomi, PLEASE let them know their customer service SUCK really bad.....They never answer messages...To get one was necessary to open a dispute on aliexpress, because they simply FORGOT to send the longer cables i bought for my CR-10S....It´s insane to spend 460 euros in a product and not have a seller answer when you have questions..... TEVO are doing a much better job in this area and i really think instead of getting another CR-10S(or CR-X) im going for Tevo little Monster.

I read a book about cultural differences which lead to misunderstandings and bad results when westerners deal with Chinese companies; it really opened my eyes to some things I was not previously aware of, including that it is common for Chinese manufacturers to make lots of changes to a product after it is designed and released. (the book was titled "Poorly made in China"). Personally, I have nothing against improving products for either quality improvement or cost reduction (that's just good business), but I do have a problem with undocumented and unexpected changes that do not enable users to know what changed and when, so that informed purchasing decisions can be made. In the west, if a product changes just a little bit and in an immaterial way, we expect revision numbers and a revision history log to inform us of those changes. And if a product changes in a material way impacting fit, form, or function, then the product's name should change to indicate that it is really a different product. That's how you build strong brand trust, and repeat customers; with consistency!

Before opening the box, an extra extruder, dual port nozzle and touch screen doesn’t justify an $800 price, $400 increase over a CR-10 is ridiculous. Your experience makes it worse.

+ CHEP ... One year later ... the CR-10 costs about $ 360 and a CR-X about $490. And *now the question is:* do $ 130 justify "an extra extruder, dual port nozzle and touch screen"?!? ... Maybe, it's time to re-review an actual machine? Even an unfair comparison with an Ender 3 would be nice, since this machine is 3 times the price! I would love to see that on filament friday! Greetings from Germany!

Only in the short-term. this kind of thing only really works with software which people can get fixed for free so long as they have an internet connection. With Hardware it ruins your brand reputation and causes people to stop trusting you thus it causes people to stop buying thier product. In the long run doing this could cost them everything.

And another issue is that all of us free beta testers do not have free access to future upgrades. And worse, they don't even tell you what has been improved based on feedback or not, so even if you buy a new one, you are not guaranteed that things have changed.

Angus, at maker's muse, had the same issue with the bed leveling. As well as most of the others. If they want beta testers, they should do what the software companies do and have a selection of people they send them to so they can tell them what the bugs are they need to fix. These ppl rarely get paid but do get to use it for free.

s R in the United States that might work in China that won't work look how long it took geeetech to put on a clone... I think about that for a moment how many Ender threes have been sold in the last couple months... They would have all been geeetech sales don't get me wrong I like geeetech I love their printers but they cloned the under 3 so did TiVo with the Flash both clones of the Ender 3 have they done what you suggested they be out of business... So how do you get around that? I don't have the answer for that but I know they could not have done a small release and spent the next couple months iterating in house because all the other manufacturers would have destroyed them in sales so they would be bleeding money in R&D and QC while the competition is raking in the money and don't tell me it settles out over time when people realize the good stuff over the bad stuff because the Clones will just copy the good stuff too it's not like here in the US we have to spend a fortune to set up a company and set up Manufacturing anybody over there in China can walk down the halls of their business districts and grab all the parts they need to start manufacturing a printer I wouldn't be surprised if you can go from I'm going to create xyzprinting today and next week you're shipping a printer it's that easy over there so we should be careful what we wish for :-) creality is trying to be a good neighbor the others are not that doesn't mean we excuse their mistakes that doesn't mean we called him out on the floor like Joel was doing here and like I missed it the mistakes in this printer while I consider them very minor are also in theory very easy to catch in manufacturing and should have been especially for one of their first pro-level printers one of their higher-end models which is what the CRX is supposed to be so I'm not saying go easy on them but let's attacking from the right angle and I fully admit I'm not sure what that angle is but I don't think the process of beta testing with customers is a bad one if done properly

It's no different than them sending the stuff to reviewers like they do now, only the problems don't get plastered on the net and the user is very aware that they might get something that is more junk than anything. It doesn't have to be done by the guy next door.

Sometimes I get the feeling that these companies don't even understand what they are making. My Creality CR-7 is a prime example. It shipped without a heated bed, so only PLA. Good, fine. Yet it had no part cooling fan so no PLA either. Even weirder is that the PCB cooling fan plugs into the port for the part cooling fan so if you don't turn the fan on in g-code, the PCB could potentially overheat. The annoying thing is, for maybe $30 more I fixed all the problems and now it prints better than my Ultimaker or Prusa. Like you said with this machine, they get 81% there and then quit. It's so frustrating.

It seems that more 3d printing companies are using their customers to find the problems and report back, then improving as they go. I am glad about them fixing known issues, but it make you not want to be the first one diving in on a new model.

Christopher Maschek correct this is what I tell my viewers don't buy the first run wait a couple months at least with creality printers you'll always get a working machine but the first batch or two will need little fixes As far as I know they are the only company iteratively improving their products TiVo ads corrections to the next product but does not appear to improve the existing product at least not yet

Quality control is severely lacking in a lot of products today. I work in the tech industry, management pushes for unrealistic time lines, when the engineers explain what they can deliver by the unrealistic timeline, management states, “approved”. Mid-management to executive management are to blame for product that meets the market unfinished. Today’s management 101 is to cut corners in timeline, cut cost, and cut experienced engineers for low cost newb employees. The only way for this process to change is to have a law, or lawsuit that will hurt their bonuses, and pocket books . As consumers, we need to hold them accountable for releasing unfinished products. Thank you for your help in taking a stand!

Sorry, I am totally out of the loop here, but just a question on the background/context of this video as I have been looking into buying a Creality machine. Did they send you a review unit for free and/or are these printers currently being sold in this state to customers? If the review unit was free but not yet commercially available, I feel that some QC problems should be expected as there are probably still ongoing hardware design iterations. In the same vein though, I feel like you can then also fairly say "this unit isn't there yet, do not buy." However if this current version is for sale, then I agree that the QC problems could be an issue. Having first started with 3D printer kits back in the day, maybe my tolerance for this kind of stuff is higher than the average user, but I also feel like a true, 100% novice-user-friendly 3D printer is still a while away, so some manual labor will always be required regardless.

It's not just Creality, lot of tech companies are like this. The manual for my Cetus 3D did not match the machine I got. This whole idea of using early adaptors as testers came from software companies. It worked for them because their product were not physical, they can push fixes to customers via the net. I used to be an early adaptor, but I've given that up since a lot of tech companies has adopted this QA model.

How did you end up going with the CRX? I have just acquired one but it has the stock Creality board with the noisy stepper drivers. Is this printer worth a revisit for you to "improve" on the failings of Creality? There is lots of these flooding the second hand market now and very little information to improve on these. Things I would consider would be mainboard, bl touch and reinforcement for the wobbly gantry.

Let them come out with a solid product first...... WAIT!

I'd consider it mate. Sounds like the initial beta release was a cock-up certainly. Though i've had mine a week or so and it's been delightful. My first out of the box test was a glow in the dark material, this was quoted as difficult to print with. I modeled up a little bat (see bat on Thingie verse) and it worked straight away. Certainly some of the lower quality parts worth upgrading. though it's a decent tool out of the box. I built my first printer in '07 and we use some high end stuff in aerospace. For the price this is great.

That will only lead to disaster, It’s not worth it if they drive the ones doing things the correct way into the ground because they won’t cut corners. If this is a $800 printer just get the folgertech ft-5 r2 yes its more of a kit, yes more assembly is required, yes to get dual extrusion you would need to fashion your own y connector or add a second extruder, but its $500 with 300x300x400 build volume, better support, a ridiculously rigid frame and it should work first thing after assembled, oh and did I mention folgertech wont beta test on you :P. obviously this comment is half a joke, but I seriously cannot see why in the world people would by a $800 printer from china that has a single nozzle dual extruder with no bed leveling when you could get a $500 printer add $20-30 in parts, configure a couple lines of code in marlin and have a dual extruding machine cheaper and probably with a little less headache than the cr-x. Love what you do joel, and I love the honesty in the video.

Had the same issue with the bracket off the cr-10s. Had to use a printed adjustable limiter switch and had to add washer to the springs and longe screws to get the bed higher. That's how much I had to higher it so it doesn't crash all the time.

4 printers over here and had challenges to each of them, such as missing parts, broken parts, missing micro SD chip, a substituted part that were not advertised such as a push button controller rather than what should've had a dial instead, defective controller cards, even bought a defective smoothieboard, english marketing, non english instructions, and a Anet seller who played games with cat n mouse messages for months rather than to ship a vital missing part. I ended up ordering the part from someplace else, and ebay read the messages and was amazed at how the seller tried to keep a dialogue going with the intention to make the ordeal run past eBay's customer complaints time limit. After the time limit, the seller became less responsive, skipping inquiries, and always 48 hours and not a minute sooner if to reply back, as per eBay's time limit policy. Even past the 60 day time limit, ebay realized the seller was a complete loogin, so ebay made an exception to their preset time limit and offered me a complete refund, though i opted for just enough to cover the cost of the missing part. And why advertise a project as being ideal for ABS, then make sure to not include a heatbed capable of reaching a typical ABS temperature setting, not even after waiting the usual hour it takes to max out. Yes, the bed levelling screws are poorly designed, that involved adding extra springs and washers, and even then, that maxes out at its barely within a hairs range of being ideal. Had a extruder framing melt and was observed dripping while smoldering towards housefire, and it would've eventually because being a delta meant it would've tossed the firey stuff over to one side past the printer eventually. Thermal runaway at the thermistor or the controller card. Damn things should have a bonus smoke alarm mounted to them really. I guess this is how it was when the first cars were being sold too. Lol Now, they only make them to eventually fall apart, often very shortly after the we got you covered time limit is reached. Let's see more effort put into the recycling of plastics when it comes to the 3d printing world. Printers designed with a complete recycler setup either built in or included affordably so as if to encourage responsibility towards our planet, or should all fish in the ocean and people that eat them end up with 3 eyes?

It is refreshing to see a machine that did not receive a glowing review. Quality control is the issue with many of these units and I feel that many purchase them expecting all roses since most reviews depict them in such a flattering way. These I3 clone machines have become so bland and boring . PLEASE stop making the same cookie cutter I3 style machines. I understand that many people want larger, cheaper machines but this has stunted all innovation. Most manufacturers seem to have forgotten about 32bit boards, direct drive, Core XY, true multi extrusion and enclosed units in favor of what they can manufacture cheaply and easily. At this point there are plenty of low cost, good quality machines. Let's see something new. Raise3D has great machines but not everyone has the 3k plus that they cost. My kingdom for some innovation!

Good job on the honest review. Might have also been a good idea to mention the stupidly high price though, a big premium to pay for just an extra extruder...
