Batya Ungar-Sargon is an American journalist and author. Recently, she traveled the country, speaking to everyday Americans about their lives and what they think about the political, economic, and cultural climate. She compiled her findings in her book: 'Second Class: How the Elites Betrayed America’s Working Men and Women.'
“The most shocking thing I found was that the American Dream for working-class people is much more alive and well and healthy in red states than it is in blue states,” says Ms. Ungar-Sargon.
We discuss how, according to her, the Democratic party betrayed middle-class Americans by creating a knowledge industry consisting of credentialed elites who benefit economically from illegal immigration and trade liberalization.

I was building lab equipment for the University of Fla. They let me know that my products were better, cheaper, and my service was excellent. When they found out I did not have a degree, they no longer would hire me. So much for meritocracy. Guess I'm a deplorable.

And they wonder why people go get worthless degrees. You should go and get an online degree from a diploma mill. The the “University” will rehire your firm.

Batya Ungar-Sargon, is just amazing, and this has been an awesome interview. I really think she can cure some TDS and get people focused on the issues again, not the man. I’m almost certain I can cure some TDS just by showing some of those I know who are afflicted, this interview. Looking forward to the new book. Absolutely brilliant.

My opinion: When it comes to the mental illness we call TDS syndrome there is one stubborn problem that is very hard to overcome, and it's best described by the old saying: "You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make them drink." To be clear: the same is true of Donkeys !"

Housing, food , free lunch , free breakfast, medical care, free education, and all the various benefits available those in the system are worth more then $50K per year, at todays prices. The "disadvantaged" people ,who are in the Govmnt the welfare system are way ahead of the fool who works.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski introduces a bill that offers Veterinary care to Indigenous people. let that sink in for a moment. apparently indigenous children are hospitalized from being bitten by dogs at twice the national average. this will lesson the risk of rabies to the indigenous population. this is no joke, this was the justification for the bill. this was in my local paper today. will this make my vet bills more affordable? or will my vet buy more expensive test equipment and raise prices now that there is a customer that doesn't care about the cost. when pet insurance was created, i noticed that the cost of my vet bills doubled. same thing all over again.

Fabulous research! I lived this and saw my life transformed. The great recession drove me from architectural design to the oilfield. I went from 34k to 100k a year. There's still middle class potential in oil extraction but the lifestyle can be bi-polar-boom bust. Great work!

I agree with much of this. However, I am skeptical about people taking pride in their work. There are still people who do a good job, but more and more people don't seem to care about the quality of the work they do. This ennui toward has gotten worse since the Covid lockdowns. It is also caused by attacks by the elites on working class people.

I was raised in a Democrat turned-Reagan turned-Republican family. So I knew better. But when I went to college in the late 80’s/early 90’s, I was also brainwashed. Getting a job, having to pay taxes and bills, plus rent quickly woke me up to reality

She did have TDS. That is why i struggle to say that i agree with most everything she says here. I do hope she isn't just grifting here but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt for now. As a Carpenter of over 35 years i have lived with the short end of the stick for decades. When i started banging nails in 1987 the journeymen who taught me the trade made $25 - $30 an hour. (Gas was under a buck a gallon) Now with 35 + years experience i struggle to get $25 - $30 an hour and I've invested tens of thousands of dollars in my own work truck and tools on top of now having the experience to get a set of plans and an address and complete the job the right way, with integrity. Now my gas is pennies under $4 per gallon ( thanx Joe )( it was the same under Barry too) and everything i need to buy to live is 3 to 4 times what it was in 1987 when i started working under the guys making the same wage i can now Fight to receive. Back then i used to hear "they are trying to kill the middle class ". I didn't know what those people meant. Now i do but have to add "they have killed the middle class".

Fantastic interview on such an important topic! I love that she and Jan put a focus on the benefits Cliff. That’s something I’d heard of before but I also don’t think about a ton. But it totally rang true that Themis is a big deal for the working class and they feel it creates perverse inventives. No reason it should be a moderately sloping hill instead of a cliff.

Robert F Kennedy Jr. is the only candidate who genuinely cares for working people in this country, and actually has the courage, skills and will to end the sell-out of middle America to the global corporations who now own our politics, resources, and discourse. A vote for Kennedy is a vote for Kennedy, and for the health and wealth of the American people.
