They make sense. It's because of scandals, or parents suing the companies, or tension, or lack of focus on the idols' part. It has happened before in certain companies, even one that shut down, and they can't afford to have that, especially because they're filming the whole process.

In almost every other entertainment industry in the world there is free interaction between men and women, kpop trainees and idols are human beings too ! They have to go through so much scrutiny and are being deprived of the normal human (dating, falling in love etc.) experience its just really heartbreaking.

The Unit is a very temporary thing for these idols. They must not see a point in allowing them to start anything among themselves. It's also because these are existing idols we're talking about. They have a reputation to keep, not a scandal to start. They have fans, no matter how many, and a relationship starting out of nowhere on a show can make those fans see them as easy or inconsiderate toward their goal. The companies know that falling in love and feelings is not really something that can be completely controlled by them, and that can create tension and lack of focus. If those idols want a relationship, they can start it elsewhere at their own responsibility, as harsh as that may sound. This is business. Contracts have been signed.

Whoever wants to be an idol basically has no life. If you ever see any sort of interview of an idol/trainee talking about their childhood, they'll say that they gave it up to become an idol. Underage idols still have to go to school or older ones to college, but they're too busy thinking of their work schedule.
