In 1967, Los Angeles Rams running back Les Josephson guided the Rams to the NFL playoffs, and made the Pro Bowl for the first time ever. In 1968, he missed the entire season. And the reason why? Not one, but two absolutely bizarre injuries that had nothing to do with football whatsoever, and were just everyday activities that no one gets injured doing

Les was my husband for most of his football career. He never once complained about what happened to him, although we did discuss it. In 1970, he played with a terrible broken jaw. After that he had a shoulder injury that could have ended his career.( Not a simple tear.) Allen wanted to take him to Washington, but the Rams would not let him go. He was a phenomenal athlete in every way. He played with multiple injuries and never complained. His Achilles injury was not a simple tear! It was destroyed! He was told he would never walk again. Allen sent him to Donald in Oklahoma. He took a muscle from his foot and made him an Achilles. It had never been done before! So Les basically came back and played with no Achilles! Without that injury, he would have been one of the most famous at his position of all time! He was different! Watch how he rolled off of defenders! Had Tommy Prothro used him like George did, things would have been different! Allen knew what he was capable of. He was superior at reading the defense! Had a photographic memory! He could run, jump, catch, throw and defend. Thank you for the video. I appreciated it!!

Growing up in LA and San Diego in the late '60s, when we played pick-up football at school, I was always Les Josephson. Great memories!

"You never root for injuries." My dad used to say that he rooted for whoever was playing the Cowboys and whoever was playing the Redskins, and when they faced each other, he rooted for injuries.

Loving these deep cuts from the ‘60s. This Assistant Professor of JG9 Studies will remind our viewers that you did a video on Ron Smith, a kickoff/punt return specialist whom the Falcons controversially traded to the Rams before this 1968 season.

Solid career for Les Josephson (34) - 17 rushing TDs, 11 TD catches, 11 years, all with L.A. The Rams always seemed to have a strong running attack throughout the years.

Those white uniforms of the Rams are great. There was a player who had a career-ending knee injury after the coin toss when he attempted to turn on his foot. "Turk" Edwards, HoF tackle for the Braves/Redskins.

I never thought I would hear of someone tearing their Achilles tendon while jumping rope. If Josephson didn't have bad luck in '68, he wouldn't have any luck at all.

Are you saying he was...born under a bad sign? Or that he'd been down since he began to crawl? Maybe that song by Cream in '68 was actually about Josephson, hmmm...

@@dallasbrubaker6054 Cream's Born Under A Bad Sign. One of the lines is literally, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all." Your comment reminded me of the song and got me to thinking about how it came out around that time and sure enough...

On a Saturday afternoon in December of 1967, The Packers came into the Coliseum and played the Rams on a Nationally Televised game. Les had a great game and if it wasn't for Travis William's 104 Yard kickoff return for a TD, the Packers would have lost by more than the 3 points they did. There was a Sports Illustrated full page photo of Lombardi shaking Josephson's hand after the game. I kept that in a folder for many years and I wish I still had it today.

The Rams were unbeatable at home that year. That was the year that the Colts lost one game (to the Rams) and they didn't even make the playoffs.

Growing up in Los Angeles I was a Rams fan. From 1967-1969, I lived and died every Sunday with the Rams. I remember Les Josephson and Dick Bass and of course Gabriel to Snow. When Les was carrying the ball, I knew something good was gonna happen for the Rams. Les always made a 110% effort. When Larry Smith came along Les got fewer carries, but he still never quit. RIP Les.

In 1966, the Rams' Marion McKeever was riding in a car driven by Roman Gabriel when it hit another car...just as McKeever was putting a tape into the car's player. His hand was jammed into the unit, severing a finger. He did continue playing in the NFL until 1973. That pales to the story of his twin brother Mike....stars at USC together, he suffered blood clots in his brain. Surgery saved his life, but ended his football career He subsequently worked in construction, while training to compete in the Olympics as a shotputter. In 1965 he was also in a car accident which left him in a coma until his death nearly two years later.

I think Josephson was the player that was blasted by a Viking in the 1969 playoffs and a Viking on the sideline hollered, "Hurts a little, doesn't it Lester?" Ah, good times...

Les definitely looked like he would be the first all-purpose back after 1967. Rushing, receiving. He did it. Too bad he got injured in 1968. RIP

3:23 this Augustana should not be confused for the Augustana of Illinois, where Ken Anderson played. Too lazy to confirm, but I believe they also are the college football team to even win four consecutive national titles while absolutely dominating the CCIW in the 80s

That's a very good story. But I would say that Les Josephson, whom I saw play, was the second unluckiest player in Los Angeles Ram history. Have you heard of Bucky Pope? He was a Los Angeles Ram wide receiver from 1964-1968. In 1964, as a rookie, he only caught 25 passes that year, but 10 were for touchdowns and he averaged 31.4 yards per catch. In 1965 everything was looking up. The Rams were scheduled to play a pre-season game on August 11, 1965. Do you know that date? It's the date of the Watts Riots. And because of the riots, the game was postponed until the next Thursday. The Rams played and Pope tore his knee. Badly. Without the Watts riots, it is certain the game would not have been postponed and highly likely Pope would not have been injured. He played for three more years but had only 9 more catches, none in his final year. Oh, he was a teammate of Les Josephson. That's unlucky.
