I totally agree with you. I've tried my fair share of Unorthodox waterbased pomades and they really don't compare to real grease. The only thing I found that I kind of like in that department is the "cool grease line " but those are consider more of an orthodox gel based. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the unorthdox waterbased pomades and think its cool what the home brewers are doing. However, they just don't work as well as oil based for my hair. Thats just me though...I have really thick hair.

Great video Tom. I myself haven't really bought a new pomade product in a while because the genre like you said is just turning into salon products. Great production value, some of the shots look plain amazing! Great work. On the topic, you are spot on. Seems like the word POMADE is "in" right now, so clays, waxes and pastes get the label pomade to sell better and to pander to the retrofillic crowds and give them pomade without the commitment to the real oil based pomades. Well that's the world we live in now.
@Tom_le_Grand

+Lukáš Helcl (LukyHell) Yes it's absolutely crazy. You come in and say you love pomade and then you clench to this salon product... I don't discriminate on anyone that loves salon products, but stop saying that it's "improved" pomade and saying that petro is now replaced with this paste/clay thing!

Excellent video. I came to the same conclusion a while ago just by looking at the ingredients on the containers of various types of mass-produced "wax"/"paste" products. That's why I've never been down the "UWB" route. I go to the supermarket for something I can wash out, but in general my shelf at home is full of traditional oil-based stuff.

Back when I started to get interested in pomades, there were none readily available where I lived. I had to settle for Brylcreem and Co. Then American Crew brought out its men's series with its pomade among others. Years later and thanks to the internet I discovered the originals from Dax and Murrays. I belong to those guys who like a pomade that washes out easily. I also discovered that with my hair texture I'm better off using water based stuff. Some of the waterbased ones I tried should have a "best before date" because they can go stale and dry out, or even dissolve on their own. I have found what works best for me and that is most important in my books. Whether whe call it pomade, clay, fiber, cream, etc., they are all still just hairdressings. In essence it is all just chemistry in the end. Before I forget, thanks for making another great video!
@Tom_le_Grand
@Tom_le_Grand 8 жыл бұрын
+Maxwell Smart Yes in the end we are talking about hair products and you have to use what works for you. None of them are better than the other but just give you a different experience or are made with different purposes. Just getting tired of people saying that UWB's are now replacing the petro's. It's a whole different type of product. Thanks for watching!

I just want your suggestion. My friend has a long hair. The length of his hair touches his eyes. What he wants to know is that are pomades good for him as he wants a shiny look but a very good hold as well. He wants to keep his hair similar to yours, upward or upward sideways. Could you give me any suggestion to what he should use or what brand is really good for that type of hairstyle that he wants, keeping in mind that it needs that shiny and really good hold. Thank you.
@Tom_le_Grand
@Tom_le_Grand 6 жыл бұрын
If you want really good hold you need a firm or a heavy hold pomade. The rule with most pomades is that the firmer they get, the less shinier they are. You can add a bit of light pomade as a topper to get some shine. With any brand of pomade you've got to learn to work with it. Good application is pretty important. Since I do not know your friend or his hair I will recommend some firm/heavy ones. Bone Crusher, Lockhart's Goon Grease or Heavy, Reuzel Pink, High Life Voodoo Brew. Goon Grease and Voodoo Brew have a pretty nice sheen of their own. If you want more shine you can use Murray's Super light, Voodoo Island or Sweet Georgia Brown Red. Any light will do basically as a topper. Use very little as it will make the hold less strong.
@jrh4248
@jrh4248 8 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, we always had clays and paste products, but those salon products didn't have that control and healthy feeling that Brewers provide. What you think about some of the homebrewers putting borax to the pomades? Is it safe?
@Tom_le_Grand
@Tom_le_Grand 8 жыл бұрын
+JR H Yes there are so many products out there and not all of them work the same way. But there surely are very good ones with similar holds and control. Works differently for every hair type I guess and that goes for every type of product. You can also go all natural and healthy but they usually are very pricey. I wouldn't dare to say the effects that borax have on your health. Better ask a chemist and a (natural) health practitioner about that ;) Thanks for watching!

Okay but the fact that many of them are home brewed with more natural and healthier components is also important. A salon product is mostly chemicals, lab made. And then we have quality ...
@Tom_le_Grand

Sure that is important if you try to maintain a healthy lifestyle but that wasn't really my point. The point was that they do not resemble or replace traditional pomades. They resemble salon products (all natural if you want).

I've been thinking the same damn thing for a while now. Granted, I love most of these "unorthodox" water-based pomades, but I didn't understand the initial and continual hype over them when they were first introduced into the traditional pomade market. Before I got into oil based pomades, I used various cream and paste products from American Crew, Tea Tree, Bedhead, etc... And these all washed out with one shampoo cycle. A couple years later, after I familiarized myself with the more traditional oil-based pomades, the whole "unorthodox, home-brew waterbased" trend started taking off, and everyone lost their shit because it gave good hold and washed out with one cycle, and I did not understand why those characteristics were being so hyped up. Like I said, I tend to like all the "unorthodox" water-based pomades that have come out lately, but I'm unwilling to act as if they're revolutionary for the pure fact that products like this have been around the whole time. To me, they're simply just good products that give me good control over the way I'd like to style my hair. Anyway, nice video and glad I'm not alone in this issue.

+gunguy999 As soon as I started to realise that these products were just (high end if you will) salon-type products it sort of made me giggle. All of these so called "real men", that were normally mocking salon products, were now getting hysterical about these uwb's. It was funny and interesting to me to see how that works and it inspired me to make this dramatised video on it. In about a year time it had drastically changed the industry in that little community.

Hi Tom, I live in Amsterdam. I'm into pompadours since a while now, I tried murrays but found it a bit annoying that it doesn't wash out very easily.. now this unorthodox water based pomade seems like a great replacement. Do you know where to get one of these in Amsterdam?

The unortho's are hard (probably no one has it) to get in a physical store in The Netherlands. You can get it on www.tameyourbeast.com where a Belgian guy imports some of them. Or www.pomadeclub.com/hair/pomade/water-based/unorthodox.html with very nice shipping prices. Another one is www.hedgelion.com but you have to contact the seller for international shipping.

I’m a guy with curly hair and I really like to do combovers. What my goal is with most products I try is; to comb my curly headed self to straight hair. The only thing so far that has been 100% successful at that for me is water based pomades. Off the top of my head, the water based products I’ve tried that have worked are, railcar finegoods pomade (standard and supreme holds) Layrite standard and superhold, reuzel blue, and dapper dan. The only UWB pomades I’ve tried so far to get the same look are Shear Revival crystal lake and firsthand water based pomade. Both of those have been unsuccessful for me in achieving a curly to straight hair combover. They definitely deliver fantastic texture to my hair but I always have to do a more messy looking hairstyle with them and sometimes that’s upsetting. The only way I can achieve a combover with UWB pomades is the blow dry my hair straight and then apply the product. Anyone with curly hair ever notice this? Anything out there that also works curly hair to straight, for a nice clean shiny combover? Let me know! Guess for this particular look with my hair type...I’m a water based jelly head all day!

When I apply any type of petro, UWB, clay, or paste into damp or dried hair it comes out wavy. I have plenty oil based products but I feel like I'm either not using them right or they just don't work for my hair.

Fucking awesome video. I didn't think about it that way, but I think you could be right about these products being salon products in disguise in some ways. Personally, I'm totally fine with that as I've always been into salon type products. One thing I will say though, is that a lot of these unorthodox water based pomades perform BETTER than many of the salon products I used to use and that makes a difference. I still do love my oil based products as well. I used to build up for weeks at a time with no problem and only don't do so now because of reviews.

+dudewuttheheck Well they are certainly derived or equal to it in my experience. Some work better than others. Same goes for the salon products. There are so many and ofcourse they do not all work for me. But that goes for petro and gel-types as well. Blackship and O'Douds works well for my hair type. I sometimes mix them with a little bit of petro for some extra shine and slickness haha.

Thank you for making this video. I am personally a clay + wax or gel pomade depending on if I want shine or not for my bedhead hairstyles, styling paste kind of guy. That being said, it leaves one confused when you keep seeing these unorthodox water based pomades and cant figure out why they are considered pomade when they don't really have any of the characteristics of a pomade. They typically do not any shine and if they do it is minimal. Additionally, many of the time they even say clay pomade. Isn't that really just a clay then? Hit the nail on the head with this one, the products are good, but they just aren't necessarily revolutionary. Then again, maybe I am just missing something.

I couldn't agree more. Oil based pomade still the best for me. Watching in 2019 🤟

Most of those styling products have a ton of chemicals in them. Look as the back of those Kevin Murphy products. I am sure they work just fine but I can't even pronounce half of that crap and i don't want it in my hair. Awesome brands like Flagship, Sheer Revival, O'Douds, Ominous Style Co. use a few natural ingredients and cost less.

+Scott Alcott That may be true. There are certainly some ingredients on there of which I have no knowledge which doesn't necessarily mean they are bad or unnatural. But let's say they are... In that case these uwb's could add something substantial to a healthy lifestyle. I guess you also choose your food and beverages with care so these products could really go with that. But still they do not in any way resemble or replace traditional pomades. They resemble salon products (all natural if you want). That doesn't mean they are bad products. I very much like Blackship and O'Douds because they work well for my hair-type. The point of this video was to give a counter reaction to all the people stating that petro-based products (which probably aren't healthy at all, who knows...) are now being replaced by these uwb's.

You had me at "I'm not here to tell you all of these are sissy products, made for nancy boys and should belong in blumaan group." I'm developing my own pomade brand to bring to market and have been researching videos and recipes. I need to have a good product so I can take care of my family and this video is encouraging.

salon products are shit, expensive, and often only come in 2oz or less. They often even apply with tug and pull. UWB pomades promote supporting small american buisnesses and sell for unbeatable prices at usally 4 oz. UWB pomades apply without the tugg and pull, much like how Lockhart's and PND apply. They're not salon products. They're home brewed for a goon reason. A lot of people can't stand salon products and the cosmetics industry. And the best part is that UWB pomades have natural products that you can actually understand and read. Salon products are full of chemical junk.

Aaah... getting so tired of having the same discussion over and over haha. So sure. It's for Goons that don't like to get there hands and hair dirty. Goons that prefer a more creamy substance in their hair that is washable. And it's high quality for affordable prices. If you think UWB’s resemble and feel like petro’s that’s awesome for you dude ;)

You should of mentioned that Classic oil based pomades do not work on curly, thick, wavy, hair . Only strong hold - water based pomades work on thick, wavy type hair . Please take a deep breath , water based pomades are not here to kill you 😂
