The first video in a new series where I look at the entire publication run of Official UK Sega Saturn Magazine. This is my favourite video game magazine of all time, it had an enthusiastic staff of dedicated writers who were die hard Sega fans and it lasted on store shelfs longer than the Sega Saturn console itself in the UK.
One of the most fascinating aspects of reading the magazine now is the amount of games that were announced, previewed and in some instances reviewed but would never see a release. This forms an interesting part of the story of the Saturn's ill fortunes in the west and provides a perspective of a wider library that the console would never receive.

I'm Seb, an old school gamer who used to be a filmmaker and Film Studies teacher, and the Gamers' Garden Retro channel is my way now of staying creative in my spare time. I particularly like video games from the 5th generation and the arcades, so among other things you'll likely see plenty of videos based on these areas.

The cover from issue 1 is indeed a pre-render and not a screenshot from VF2 arcade. The Model 2 hardware does not support gouraud shading (rounded polygon surfaces) so that Pai Chan character model isn't possible on real Model 2 arcade hardware. Loved this episode! I'm from Latin America so it' always interesting for me to see how gaming was experienced in other parts of the world back then.

You're gonna find so many cancelled Saturn games. I remember as it became clear the Saturn wasn't going to last long some of the magazines would just start claiming all sorts of Playstation games were coming just so they could put the titles on covers. You'd look into the magazine and find the games mentioned and it'd be clear they were just hyping up rumours rather than anything substantial.

You’re right mate, I’d say the majority of the articles are genuine, but I’ve found some incredible claims in later issues!

@@GamersGardenRetro The virtua fighter 3 one sounds outlandish in this vid but I imagine no-one had seen the game yet. Would have needed quite a downgrade to be on the saturn for sure.

@@MellowGaming Rich Leadbetter say in a Digital Foundry Q&A a few years ago he never saw a hint of anything confirmed for VF3 on Saturn. The idea was always floated that there would be some kind of upgrade cart, but yep that just sounds like conjecture to me too.

Amazing! I had the feeling it was but I was pretty young at the time and thought I might have mixed it up. The cabinets were huge, such an awesome setup.

Very nice vid. We'll cry when 1997 issues appears on scene. SSM was one of the most trusteable Magazines and most time was true when they talked about proyects on the way. By the way, do you like to play cancelled games? (those already available)

I bought a couple of repros of cancelled games (I love Half Life on Dreamcast even with it's dodge frame rate). But I don't have a way to burn my own discs really at the mo, otherwise I would get far more into it with cancelled PS1, Saturn and DC games.

Reading through an old interview with Capcom, (around time Sega had just annouced the Dreamcast) and it threw up a few interesting points: 1)Saturn Resident Evil 2 (or Biohazard 2 in Japan), Capcom said it WOULD'NT have been impossible to do, nor would it needed the 4MB Ram cart, as Ram was'nt the issue, 2 key things stopped it happening: The 1st, Sega annoucing the Dreamcast and that they (Sega) were no onger working on Saturn games-Capcom felt that people would stop buying Saturn games as it was seen as being a 'dead' console and also retailers would start clearing shelves of Saturn games, to replace with something else (this also meant Capcom would'nt be converting any more CPS II games to Saturn). The 2nd issue was that Capcom were struggling to get the top performance from the Saturn's CPU, (something they admit Sega's own internal team had managed) and as a result, the CPU speeds they were getting, were too slow to handle the 'graphics calculations' Res Evil 2 needed, as it was on PS1. So, they were'nt going to re-code Res.Evil 2 for Saturn, when Sega had just pulled the plug on it

point 1 does not hold a lot of water when you realize that Capcom released Sfz 3 and final fight revenge on saturn well after bh2 was released

@@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 Well, depends on the translation and if they were just spewing pr bullshit. What is sure is that SFZ3 and FFR came out well after Saturn's demise...so they could have done the same with BH2 , i'm quite sure sony paid them good money to keep the exclusive just like they paid for TR2 and many more during 97/98. Such a scummy company, sony, that now cries because a bigger bully entered the ring (ms) and is threatening to buy everything up just like sony before.

The suprise launch and poor managing killed the system slowly. Majority of those cancelled would have been if sega unified and properly launch the Saturn to it's original date.

Yes the launch was handled terribly and really make it too much of an uphill struggle. Do you think the PS1 would still have run away with it though if the Saturn released a little later?
@maroon9273
@maroon9273 3 жыл бұрын
@@GamersGardenRetro yes, once final fantasy 7 launch date in the states. I believe the Saturn will compete with the ps1 for a year or two (the Saturn was still released in 94/95 with a proper launch). At least it will have more market shares than n64 worldwide due to utilizing cd media.
