There's a third daytona usa on the sega saturn called "daytona circuit edition" (without the "championship"). This is basically the champion circuit edition with improved controls. The controls are like in the first game. This game is very rare and hard to find.

I'm a french viewer and i actually try to buy all the old magazine of SSM UK, and franch version called MegaForce. Saturn was my favourite plateform but with some recoil, i believed so so strongly in the announcements that I was very often disappointed that it was bullshit. Like the "first capture" of RE2 official...even capcom said this version never existed. Anyway...Faith is something we can't explain right?

This game may not be a masterpiece, but it is enjoyable for the most part. Sadly the lukewarm reviews by the critics, overshadowed it and faded it into the obscurity. I have the American release and I happy to have it in my collection. Except for the name, which is dumb. While in Japan and Europe is call Hard Edge, in the US the game is call T.R.A.G.

No Model 2 game ran at 60fps, they ran at 57fps. This is so commonly repeated and is it wrong. The first port you've wrongly called not successful, was infact very successful and very highly regarded by all that reviewed it. You are correct it was a rushed mess to look at, but you're absolutely incorrect that it was a failure. Shame they didn't spend another 12 months on it, if they did it would've been the port we should've got but really never did. Ridge Racer on PS1 wasn't even close to arcade perfect, it ran at half the frame rate, and well under half the resolution. It may be fairly polished, but it is a massive step away from the near arcade perfect port it often gets called. Very short and very basic game, it could've been done on the 32x minus the textures and played just as well. Daytona USA smoked Ridge Racer, in the arcades and at home. I like Ridge Racer, but it is a play 5 times and never again for 2-3 years game, no way you could spend a full day on it now. Daytona 2001 wasn't Daytona, any more than Daytona Championship Circuit Edition was. And what is with those gumby wheels sticking 4 feet out the sides of the car???

I rented Hard Egde together with a friend from a video game rental, and we both enjoyed it quite a bit even back then, I believe my friend actually ended up trading other games in for it. It's basically a less polished anime themed Resident Evil clone made in the late 90s, and a perfectly decent and fun game if you like tank control RE style games.

I played the arcade a few times back when it came out. But played it a lot on the Saturn. I know people bashed that version, but at the time was the only home port so couldn't compare it. Decent enough for me to enjoy. Also, it had the better version soundtrack over the arcade. Years later, I played and completed the PS3 version. No other words to describe than a perfect port. Now, I have the original arcade version on my model 2 emulator with a wheel/pedal/shifter setup reliving the good 'ol days!

Having lived through the 8 and 16-bit eras as a rabid Sega fan, I have to nevertheless say that insinuating the PC-Engine/Turbografx was less capable because it was 8-bit is a solid red herring. I personally like the sound chip less than that of the Mega Drive/Genesis, but the PCE’s color palette was nicer and it could display more colors onscreen. Sprite differences weren’t significant, if I recall. The MD bested it with its scrolling layers, but overall, I feel the systems were very closely matched. Personally, I feel the biggest hinderance of the PC engine at the time was limited HUcard size. If NEC/Hudson had been more savvy at marketing, we very well may have seen a different outcome outside of Japan.

Interesting... Using only the left hand to control the gamepad (while using the right hand for the mouse) make it looks similar to the _PS Move Navigation_ controller for the PS3. It's not by change that some PC gamers use the PS Move Navigation together with a mouse to play some games.

Great retrospective! I was happy to hear you briefly mention how the Saturn's music of Daytona was improved. I've always felt this was the best version of the soundtrack between the arcade, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I'm not sure if it was simply remastered or re-recorded, but the Saturn's vocals are cleaner and more refined. For me, half the enjoyment of Daytona comes from the amazingly memorable soundtrack. While I also love the arcade soundtrack, the Saturn takes the top spot. I have the Saturn CD tracks ripped in lossless audio, and still to this day, I will play "Sky High" when I need a pick-me-up. While I'm very pleased with the Xbox 360/PS3 port, I only wish they would've added in an option to be able to use the OST from the Saturn version as a companion to the arcade original.

These ports are so fascinating to me but I’m sure it could’ve done some of these better. Super Hang On is great, I love the way it plays, sure with a direct comparison it looks worse, but it feels almost as good and without a comparison it could fool you into believing it’s nearly as good, which is what good retro ports should strive to do. It could be improved a bit I feel but it’s very competent and that engine could’ve done the original Hang On Arcade Perfect. Space Harrier 2 is a real disappointment to me, I love the arcade game but the Mega Drive one is just way too choppy for my liking, even though the sprites are respectable. Outrun on the other hand is an impressive port I think, it’s not perfect but it looks great, however the changed colours, somewhat-lacking music, and the weird graphical glitches like the ocean flicker and the inconsistent framerate mame the game feel almost unfinished, it’s competent but could be better I think. Unlike the Master System though, After Burner 2 IS AMAZING, I love that arcade game but the Mega Drive port is exactly what I was hoping for, the music is shockingly well done, it’s a bit compressed but it uses the ladder effect and subtle rolloff of the original model 1’s shoddy audio hardware to its advantage. It’s my ideal port, graphically it’s compromised, but there’s enough sprites to show the high speed movement still and it looks nice, and the planes look great and scale super smoothly, and it perfectly captures the gameplay of the arcade and plays great.

I can’t believe I haven’t posted a positive comment here yet, I love this series of videos. Most of these ports are really impressive, Hang-On is a really good port, it captures the feeling of the game and runs really well and the sound effects are close, although the lack of music is very disappointing. Space Harrier is unique but definitely not great, it plays poorly and looks so clunky, but the theme song is really good! Outrun’s port looks great to me, it’s really well done, the best ports from the time in my opinion would sacrifice some graphical detail but find their own good looking style, and nail that controls and gameplay, and Outrun definitely seems to do that great. Music is awesome too and it looks very smooth. After Burner is probably the most disappointing one to me, it’s WAYYYY too choppy. But the music is good enough and the sprites are huge, it’s just a shame it runs so poorly. It’s impressive how the did the ground detail though, the mega drive version could’ve benefitted from that technique. This is a good video but I’m glad the volume issues were fixed in future videos, your channel really improved over time but even this video is good.

Nice series! I loved all of these games back in the day. I played through the Master System ports of Space Harrier, After Burner, Outrun, Hang On and Thunderblade, as well as their ports/sequels on the Genesis/MegaDrive (I'd even say that Space Harrier, Outrun and After Burner are my most purchased Sega games across Sega and non Sega consoles). Can't say I agree with the assessment for Outrun, it was the best home port until the Saturn version. Yeah they made some concessions; it's missing the cars engine sound, and some of the roadside detail was cut back, but the actual courses were very faithful to the arcade. If you knew the arcade courses, the Megadrive versions were second nature, almost all of the turns, dips in the road, even what gear you took them in was the same.

The only good game you mentioned is Thrash Rally for the Neo Geo, which has the right camera view and the right gameplay. The others are too zoomed in and/or have poor gameplay. Neo Drift-Out nonsensically zooms in and out between two camera views, both of which are bad. I dare anyone to try to understand what the zooming depends on! The designers were smoking something really strong.

Fun video, but there are some inaccuracies. System16.com doesn't list texture filtering as a Model 2 feature, and I've never seen it. Dithering would be much less pronounced if filtering was available. Second, Pop up in Daytona Arcade seems to be barely remembered at all for such a "popular" title. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNVdfqqr29eXiYk.html

Reading through an old interview with Capcom, (around time Sega had just annouced the Dreamcast) and it threw up a few interesting points: 1)Saturn Resident Evil 2 (or Biohazard 2 in Japan), Capcom said it WOULD'NT have been impossible to do, nor would it needed the 4MB Ram cart, as Ram was'nt the issue, 2 key things stopped it happening: The 1st, Sega annoucing the Dreamcast and that they (Sega) were no onger working on Saturn games-Capcom felt that people would stop buying Saturn games as it was seen as being a 'dead' console and also retailers would start clearing shelves of Saturn games, to replace with something else (this also meant Capcom would'nt be converting any more CPS II games to Saturn). The 2nd issue was that Capcom were struggling to get the top performance from the Saturn's CPU, (something they admit Sega's own internal team had managed) and as a result, the CPU speeds they were getting, were too slow to handle the 'graphics calculations' Res Evil 2 needed, as it was on PS1. So, they were'nt going to re-code Res.Evil 2 for Saturn, when Sega had just pulled the plug on it
