Professional wrestling has seen all kinds of colorful characters over the years, but there was only one Macho Man Randy Savage. With his booming voice, flashy wardrobe, and over-the-top theatrics, the man embodied everything that professional wrestling was about. After all, Macho Man did everything from feuding with Andre the Giant to recording a rap album. It doesn’t get much showier than that. However, how much do you know about the man behind the character? From his surprisingly private wedding to the many tragedies of his life, let’s take a look at the untold truth of Macho Man Randy Savage.

All I know, is that when I was 12 years old, I had the opportunity to meet Macho Man at the “World of Wheels” custom car show. He was soft spoken, and seemed to be about 5’10, and just a really nice guy. He took the time to talk to me and my dad, let us take picture, and really left a lasting impression on me. He was nothing like his stage persona, and it was a real honor and privilege to meet him. Something I’ll never forget.

In 1987, I moved to Largo, FL as a new physician at the local Non Profit Hospital. Randy was my next door neighbor! He was always the gentleman. When I asked him to come to our "Hospital Foundation Gala," he went out of his way to support the hospital foundation. He attended in full wrestling regalia and donated to the silent auction making our events a great success. Everyone loved him. Of course, he presented a larger-than-life and even scary persona. But he used this stardom in our little community to the benefit of all and never asked for anything in return. God bless him.

Who cares? People who know the real history will know in what series Macho Man wrestled in. The aptly named (because it's incredibly stupid and whoever came up with it was a moron) mandela effect is just ignoramuses who wrongly listened to "word-of-mouth", "popular opinion" and "common hearsay". When these thick clowns learn they have been wrong for years they refuse to accept it. Hence the retard effect, uh I mean the mandela effect (who didn't f*ckin' die in prison, Steve Biko did). Those who know will know the facts. Those who don't know the facts - who cares about them?

I was night manager at the Omni @ CNN Center in the mid-90's and I knew all the wrestlers, they stayed there all the time and always checked in late at night when I was on duty. They were all normal, nice guys except Hulk Hogan (who I hardly ever saw admittedly) who was a total douche, and Randy Savage. I can personally confirm that the other wrestlers used to call him "The Cartoon" because he was always "in character" and he was the only one who didn't check in under his real name. But they all seemed to like and respect him, no one really seemed to dislike him. It all seemed to be good-natured.

Rest In Peace to a true legend! I still clearly remember being at ringside when he defended his world title against Ted DiBiase back in the Summer of 1988! I also remember Virgil trying to hold Macho Man still, hoping DiBiase could get a cheap shot, only to have Macho Man escape and duck in time, causing DiBiase to accidentally punch Virgil instead! After DiBiase was checking on and apologizing to Virgil, I also clearly remember feeling the vibes real well when DiBiase's shoulders hit the ring floor when Macho Man back suplexed him, then holding diBiase's houlders still for a three count, getting the pin and win! That was such an amazing night!

That's because back then wrestlers were marketed in ads, in movies made by real studios, they truly wanted wrestlers to be larger than life. Today the WWE wrestlers are puppets hired so that other companies can't use them, and even non-wrestlers on WWE's payroll have no say in what's going on. The most popular wrestlers today are John Cena, Randy Orton and Roman Reigns. The first two have been there for a decade and became internet memes several times, the last one is the only person to get constant positive exposure over recent years and also made mainstream media for "beating" leukemia.

I can remember back to the days of Big John Studd and Chief Jay Strongbow and Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. And before The Genius, he was "Leaping" Lanny Poffo, jumping over guys as they bounced off the ropes, and throwing little frisbees into the crowd. The early 80s, before Hogan blew up into such a character. Then along came Savage, and the Ultimate Warrior, and Nikolai Volkoff, and Brutus Beefcake. And then the Undertaker made an enormous splash onto the scene. And then things just became silly.

I'd run into him from time-to-time at airports. He was next in line behind me at the Madison restaurant one evening, I visited with hime briefly, and we both talked about "Slim Jims" being a staple for a snack on long trans-oceanic flights for me and my crew. We sat at tables next to each other and talked between bites. I heard a little bit of muffled laughter from some of his compadres as we talked. I didn't think much if it. Later that evening as we left Denver for L.A., I reached into my flight kit for my flashlight and my hand felt a bunch of strange thin floppy objects. I looked directly into my kit and saw a dozen Slim Jim meat snacks. I shared the Jims with my f.o. and flight engineer, which left the cockpit a bit spicy smelling. Randy had snuck the Jims into my floppy leather flight case, the one that had been with me for 6 continents, and numerous ocean crossings. I still have the bag, and there might be a tinge of Slim Jim fragrance every now and then. "Snap into a Slim Jim" Randy. The next ones are on me. Vayo con dios.

I was kind of into wrestling in the late 1960s. Names I remember off the top of my head: Ray Stevens, Pat Patterson, Pepper Gomez, Haystack Calhoun, etc. There were matches broadcast every weekend from Oakland, CA.....hosted by Walt Harris. Roller Derby was pretty popular as well. One of my friends won the chance....( probably from some radio station ...).....to remove the cape from some wrestler's shoulders, as he stepped into the ring....when the whole party came to our town. He seemed so dejected afterwards.....saying that he hung around after the event.....and watched the good guys & the bad guys, all climbing into a big station wagon TOGETHER. He followed them to a little bar, and realized they were good friends, and weren't really enemies at all....LOL. I only recall ever attending one match. They were selling beer in glass bottles back then, and there were bottles & fists flying out there in the bleachers. As fake as it all is.....I think of those guys as buffed-up ballerinas. The skill level it must take, not only to master all of those moves night after night, but also NOT to really f#@k each other up so badly, that they really put each other out of commission. I know there were tragic exceptions, but very rare.

The baby oil thing with Andre is true. However, Andre's overall problem was that he was always in pain. His hygiene was also pretty bad as you could smell him coming. According to Hogan the Giant didn't want to shower, just wrestle and hit the bars. Disgusting as he wreaked also of alcohol. Baby oil you just wash off no big deal, but if you don't shower....

Macho Man and Tommy Dreamer were the best wrestlers I've met. Since it was a Slim Jim event (I'm veg lol) I did the best female impression of him... Lol. It was embarrassing to do that in front of him and on a microphone. It was him and his bro - both amazing people. Ah well. RIP macho man. ❤ Snap into a slim jim. OH YEEEAAHH

I lived in southern Illinois in the late 70's and Macho Man , Leaping Lanny , and George Weingrof (?) all wrestled in small town gymnasiums on weekends with maybe 3 or 4 rows of spectators , maybe 50 -60people ! The locals would go to some ones' house and watch and then go back out partying ! Macho Man paid his dues and then some ! He earned everything he had !

Macho man, at the height OF the WWF during the 80's and early 90's, Savage had the best finisher. Hogan and his dumbass leg drop was pathetic compared to Savages high flying elbow drop.

Years ago when I was a cab driver in Albany, NY, I drove Macho Man from the airport to the Knickerbocker Arena for a big match. Dude barely fit in my cab, didn't say much. Asked him about Elizabeth and Hogan, if it was real, he grunted something, drove through a crowd of fans to the rear entrance of the arena, pretty cool.
