CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ness (Kevin Costner) confronts Capone (Robert De Niro) at his hotel, challenging him to a fistfight.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Like the TV series that shared the same title, The Untouchables (1987) was an account of the battle between gangster Al Capone and lawman Eliot Ness, this time in the form of a feature film boasting big stars, a big budget, and a script from respected playwright David Mamet. Kevin Costner stars as Ness, a federal agent who has come to Chicago during the Prohibition Era, when corruption in the local police department is rampant. His mission is to put crime lord Capone (Robert De Niro) out of business, but Capone is so powerful and popular that Ness is not taken seriously by the law or the press. One night, discouraged, he meets a veteran patrolman, Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), and discovers that the acerbic Irishman is the one honest man he's been seeking. Malone has soon helped Ness recruit a gunslinger rookie, George Stone (Andy Garcia), and, joined by nebbish accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith), the men doggedly pursue Capone and his illegal interests. At first a laughingstock, Ness soon has Capone outraged over his and Malone's sometimes law-bending tactics, and the vain mobster strikes back in vicious style. Ultimately, it is the most unexpected and minor of crimes, tax evasion, which proves Capone's undoing. All of the credits for The Untouchables boasted big names, including music from Ennio Morricone and costumes by Giorgio Armani. Director Brian De Palma continued his tradition of including a homage to past masters of the cinema with a taut stairway shoot-out reminiscent of a similar sequence in Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1925).

During a business trip to Louisville Kentucky my host took me to dinner. It was at the Oak Room restaurant in the Seelbach Hilton. This hotel was frequented by Capone so much in fact he had a private dining room off to the side of the main dining room. I was lucky enough to be seated and served a fine dinner in this very room. A great memory.

In the first scene of the movie Capone openly talks to reporters about being a bootlegger... I think everyone in 1930's Chicago knew what he was doing they just didn't care because 1. Very few people actually supported prohibition and 2. He threw a bunch of money around so people liked Capone

What makes Capone so powerful in this scene is that throughout the movie they talk about him as if he’s some kind of brute force that’s somewhere in the world, yet this scene really does paint him into a more powerful person, as anyone could literally find him at his hotel home. You could literally confront him (though it probably wouldn’t go very well), and Ness tries to take him on personally. Malone made him out to be this complicated powerful force, yet he’s the one now in Capone’s presence, holding Ness back. There’s something very intriguing about that.

a flawless movie imho - I love how Kevin Kostner goes against the grain - instead of playing the stereotypical hero cop good guy, he creates a character that wants to fight corruption while at the same time retaining an inner innocence and purity which can not comprehend how so many people can be so evil and corrupt - and his character doesn't really reach its arc until he develops the wherewithal to willingly commit murder himself (when he throws Nitti off the building rooftop)
