I own a 2023 Niro EV Wave and actually chose it over the Model 3 for a few reasons. I prefer sedans, but the Niro really just feels like a big hatchback. The main problem with the Model 3 for me is its ride. The Niro is a more comfortable car (compared to the Model 3 that my Tesla dealership let me test drive). The Niro's higher seating position also makes it easier for my mom to get in and out of the car. An additional reason for me was that I wanted a lot of the driver assistance stuff. Adding Enhanced Autopilot onto the Model 3 (at the time I was shopping for the new car) took it over the price of the Niro EV Wave. To address some of the points in the video: -Cost: The pricing of it is a bit high, even more so now that Tesla has cut prices. It does get too close to the EV 6 and Ioniq 5 in pricing (and if I could have afforded the couple extra thousand, I would have just gone for the Ioniq 5 because I love how it looks). But I do feel like I'm getting my money's worth out of it. As you said in the video, it's a great car and a joy to be in. -Road tripping: There are better cars for this, no question about it. The Niro is primarily an around town commuter. However, I did take mine from SE Michigan to Austin, Texas and back in early July. We favored EA chargers along the way (mostly due to the free 500 kW charging that we got) and averaged 30 minutes per charge. We used ABRP for the routing, but it doesn't take into account the increased range over the previous generation, so it's battery percentage guessing was a bit off. We ended up just topping the battery off to 80% each stop. This was our first-time road tripping in an EV (the Niro is our first full EV, we had a 2017 Chevy Volt prior), and overall, I'd say it was a good trip. The 30-minute stops gave us enough time to use the restroom and stretch our legs, get some food and in general just relax from the on-road stresses. We're currently in the planning stages of planning a trip from SE Michigan to Anaheim, California and back. -Heated Steering Wheel: This is part of the Preserve Package on both trims. The package is an optional item that adds a heat pump, the heated steering wheel and rear heated seats for $1,300 (at the time I bought mine). It'll be named either Wind Preserve or Wave Preserve depending on the trim level. I believe it is an option on all Niro EVs in the US but is a required optional in certain areas (i.e. Kia isn't shipping Niros without the Preserve Package to Michigan). -Wheel Spin: From what I understand, they addressed the wheel spin issue of the previous generation by reducing the torque output of the electric motor. I know I'm commenting 7 months after this video went up, and I apologize for the long comment that most people probably won't see, but I really do like my car and want to share what I can from my experience. If anyone sees this and has any questions, I'll gladly answer what I can about the car

It’s exciting to see “normal” EVs, not just those with bleeding edge tech and specs. THESE are the vehicles (like the Model 3) that are going to move EVs forward. Functional, affordable, capable, and reliable. That’s what is needed.

I bought a niro EV 3 months ago to drive errands around town. Around 75-90 miles per week, It is like a small SUV with the back hatch window. I also bought a small solar setup with 6 panels just laying in my back yard. I built out a complete off grid setup with some batterys too. I have not driven my gas cars since I bought this and I have not been to a gas station either. In 3 weeks ! The off grid solar generates enough power to keep the Car going without charging from my house on the grid. I would not use it for a long road trip. But for my daily driver around town. It has been an awesome car.

Every year, 20 of Canada's top Automobile Journalists take part in EcoRun, an event where automakers are invited to bring their most efficient models to one place for three days of fighting to use less under real world road conditions. The unassuming Niro EV managed the highest overall score on this test with a 156 MPGe (4.6 mi/kWh. 13.5 kWh/100 km) average. It was second for beating its EPA estimates as well, 38 percent better than its 113 MPGe (3.4 mi/kWh, 18.3 kWh/100 km) window sticker figure. That shows the Kia could have managed 350 miles instead of the 253 miles the EPA suggests, which is very impressive. Equally impressive is that the Niro PHEV beat out the New Prius Prime PHEV (both running in pure hybrid mode with PHEV batteries fully discharged). The Niro returned 54.5 mpg, 11.1 percent better than the 49 mpg (4.8 L/100 km) rating. The Niro turned in better than 52 mpg (4.5 L/100 km) on every leg, with a best of 71 mpg (3.3 L/100 km), the best of the entire event. Niro PHEV's estimated electric range is 33 miles. Oh, and the Niro PHEV was on snow tires for some reason, making the figure even more impressive.

I love my 2022 Niro before the refresh. The older models do not have a front trunk. That is new for the 2023 model.

Really like these. If it was priced closer to $32k, I'd be sold. But as it is, the Bolt is just so much cheaper that I can't convince myself to spend the extra money.

Yes after all this I have to admit, I did sell my 2023 Ioniq 5 and last Sunday had a stellar experience picking up my brand new 2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD, white on white white with tow hitch, much much better delivery experience than my Ioniq 5 delivery which was not cleaned, took 3 hours and finally it did not fast DC charge. So the first thing we did with our Model Y was drive 300KM so I could get my wife experience (and also confirm) how easy it was to plan a route and charge, she loved it and now we can Road trip all across Canada without charging issue but our Trusty 2020 Kia Soul EV will still be our daily runabout till we trade up to 2024 Niro EV Limited, this little car has never had any warranty issues at all and in Canada Kia have excellent warranty.

How can you say this and the Kona will be your only new reasonably priced options when you just said you can get a Tesla for cheaper. There is also the ID4 which starts out at $38,995 & is eligible for the full $7,500 tax credit. Also the Chevy Equinox is slated to have a starting price of 30k and that is coming out this fall & it's expected to qualify for the full $7,500.

I own a 2020 model, and I would say it's actually a fantastic road-tripping vehicle! I think the reason Kyle disagrees is because he doesn't have kids 😅 but taking 40 min instead of 20 on charge sessions every 3 hours is not at all a deal breaker.

We rent Niro EVs on Kaua’i and the luggage room is paramount for that. There is no rapid charging on the island but free Level 2 that’s 95% solar so works great there.

We need more EVs in the Bolt’s price range.

I have to say road tripping with my 2020 Soul EV with the 64KWH battery was perfectly fine, normally we could run 2 to 2-1/2hours between charge stops were you would need to eat, bathroom break etc, perfectly liveable! With the space better suspension more room the Niro EV is a stellar car and it has full EV federal rebates eligibility in Canada!

The Wave version actually comes with the sunroof, heated steering wheel, and LED headlights.

I've never met a Niro EV owner (original or updated design) that doesn't just love their car. It's high on our list if we need a second car. A lot of dealers around us are actually discounting these a grand or two to compensate for the lack of fed tax incentive.

Here in the UK it is significantly cheaper to lease than model 3 and with average journey lengths much shorter than in the US this makes perfect sense for normal family use.

I have a the wave trim in the same color and I absolutely love the thing. It’s smooth, quite, and quick. That rear door issue you had with your rental is not something I’ve ever experienced with mine. I typically drive mine in I-pedal and do wish it would remember that when you start the car each time. I’ve had the car for about 2 months now and regularly drive between Tacoma and Seattle and the drive assist function with the adaptive cruise control is outa this word. It’s almost hands free. You still have to pay attention but it really does follow that center line it creates. As for range it actually does get the range it claims. I was skeptical but it does a good job. I also typically drive it in eco mode just to try and squeeze as much range as I can out of a charge and even in eco this thing halls ass haha. Throw it in sport and it becomes a little go cart ha. I get compliments on it all the time. Especially now, I put some Yakima HD crossbars on it and it looks killer. I was afraid that the bars would ruin the sleek look but they made it look a whole lot sportier. I was also worried that the added drag of the crossbars would decrease my range but I’ve had them on for about two weeks now and haven’t noticed any difference, so that’s nice. All that being said I do think this is probably one of the best looking EVs on the road at the moment. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6 give this car a run for its money in the looks department. Also the interior is very clean with a pretty bangin Harmon Kardon sound system. Any that’s enough for now. Point is I think it’s dope and I hope others do too.

It really highlights the value proposition of the Bolt when you can buy two of them (with tax credit) for the price is one Niro! Hard to compare the two but it's the next closest EV in price, really sad it's going away.

Kona owner here, from the UK. Americans road trip more and further than we do but this car can do 300 miles at 60 in summer or like 5 hours of driving! You need a break after that, a charging break isn't a big deal. Normal people aren't going to try cannonball this across the US or want that trip. It's charging rate is moderate but it's good enough for relaxed trips. That said the nav function great for an ICE car, but doesn't do the Tesla thing of planning chargers or preconditioning. But some minor planning isn't to much of a headache given UK life is 99% of trips less than 100 miles it's rare to need it.

The $7500 tax credit is a killer for sales in the USA. Kia would sell these all day long if buyers could qualify for the credit. Oh well.

I have a pre-refresh model (2022), and I absolutely love this car. It is so well-built, feels solid, handles so well- is such a smooth ride, it is great. It has the same guts, same motor, same battery as the new 2023 from what I understand, with just a different body style. I fortunately was able to get mine just before the $7500 tax credit went away, so including the heated seats, battery heater, heated steering wheel, and heat pump it was $33,500 after the tax credit. One thing that I have found and many other Niro owners mention (at least the pre-refresh years) is that the range far exceeds the EPA estimate... it is estimated at 239 miles, but in the summer months I consistently get 300 miles when we go out on our weekend day trips. This eases the concerns about slower charging, because we usually can do these Saturday hiking/sight seeing trips on a single charge. There have been a few longer trips where I've had to DC fast charge, doing a 20 minute top-off and it was fine. On really long trips, though, we do find ourselves opting to use my wife's ICE vehicle. I see the slower charging speed (77Kw) and being "stuck" with CCS as limitations vs. having a Tesla with their superior Supercharger network. For that reason alone I find myself looking at the Model 3 standard range that can be had after tax credit for about $36K right now.... but likely wouldn't make the move since I would take a loss on my current car on that trade in, it would be a rather costly "upgrade". But back to the Niro- I highly recommend it as a fantastic, quality EV. JD Power even listed it as the most reliable EV last year- so that combined with Kia's generous warranty really provides some additional peace of mind.

I bought a 2023 Kona EV and love it - very comparable to the Niro, but I'm glad it has the dedicated buttons for climate vs. that variable section (and had a heated steering wheel on the base package). I don't know why they included the glossy black plastic around the drive selector - it looks gross from spots and muck and will only get scratched over time. The range and economy is great, and I would buy it again!

Kyle.. The Bolt is a far better deal . $27,495 ..$13K LESS than the Niro AND 20K less than the Niro after the $7,500 for thos that qualify. The Bolt also as a City car gets closer to 300 miles of range in City. Many of us routinuely get over5miles/kWh In City. And for those that want to Road trip the Equinox comes out this fall at slightly more than 30K for base vehicle. Will be far nicer than the Niro with REAL fast charging and 310 Miles of Range. Please people dont be spending 40K (45K out the door for a CITY CAR like the Niro)

Please do a range test, charge test and all the standard electric car tests with the Niro EV

I think if we are fairly assessing the Model 3 SR it might peak at 170kw momentarily, but it curves down very rapidly. It would be interesting to see the charge curve for the Niro. They need to get that price down. The Model 3 at 39,990 is hard to beat right now. With the Fed raising rates the car sales are going to keep slowing so Tesla will likely push prices down even more. Worth the wait. I still like the Bolt better. If it only had faster charging it fits a great niche in the car market.

I love Kia including this Niro EV. I am currently driving my Kia Sorento PHEV (got my $6600 tax credit when purchased in Oct 21, so so happy....) and I enjoy it very much!!!

My dad has a green 2023 Kia Niro EV Wind with the gray interior. He has had since May 31st. So it’s not been 3 months since he had it and he loves it a lot. He came from a 2020 Range Rover Evoque. But the Kia Niro EV still has a nice interior to it.

I feel like as we get a lot more variety in terms of charging curve, peak power seems less and less important. It’s more about 10% to 80% fast charge time and average charging speed for that period. Hitting a peak of 175kw and then dropping off after a couple minutes doesn’t say that much.

40k for a base model Niro that has peak 75kw dc charging? Hell no.

I just drove one as a rental. Autopilot does work VERY well. It kept reminding me to hold the wheel- once every 5-10 minutes 😂 very fast. Roomy. Great air conditioning. I attended a seminar at a university. Electric chargers were available in the parking lot. Getting gas may be more available but you never see gas pumps in public parking lots. It will take some perspective for everyone to switch to all electric. I would consider buying one if the price was right.

I drive 2021 VW Id.4 and regularly get 270-280 miles on an 80% charge around town (which is 90% of my driving), and generally get 4.0 /kWh . So I guess that makes my I’d.4 a very efficient EV.

Love my Niro EV. Bought the wave edition which has sunroof and driver assistance on the highway. I live in South Florida and take it to Orlando every month. Makes the longer drives more relaxing. Makes my local commute pleasant as well. You also get a load option Jack for the charge port so you can plug electronics into the car if you go camping or need power for certain electronics when you lose power. Mine does not rattle in the trunk.

I don't know about the full EV but I purchased my 2018 Niro Hybrid in November of 2017 and it's the only car I've ever owned that I still like this many years later as the day I bought it. It definitely made me a Kia fan.

I love the looks of the updated Niro. So much more than the awkward looking EV6.

I feel like the glass roof is a novelty, looks kind of cool, but it definitely doesn’t help with the sound dampening

I loved the Niro when I test drove. Even the HEV version is great and gets around 54 mpg EPA

No squeaks from the trunk of my 2023 Kia Niro EV. Two months of driving in NJ and I love it compared to my 2020 Bolt. The lease price has dropped considerably so it's now about the same lease price as a 2023 Bolt. The voice commands make it easy to find charging stations on the road. And it's very efficient -- average of 4.7 miles per kwh with mixed driving conditions.

The rear wing on my 22 model was loose and made noise. I tightened the bolts, and it solved the issue. Not sure if this would apply to the 23 model.

I got the 23 KIA NIRO WAVE in graphite gray . LOVE IT!!!

When the Bolt EV is no longer on sale, the Chevy Equinox EV should be available for $30k. The Mini EV should also be another $30k option. The Kona EV is great, but those two will be more affordable than spending $40k.

Thanks for the review. We own the 2019 hybrid version that has been wonderful getting between 50 to 60 MPG and carries all 4 of the family. My wife wants to get this EV version next year (if the infrastructure improves enough). We are taking a trip to Boston in July and selected the same EV Manger Special as well with Hertz. Hopefully, we can select this Niro. Hertz keeps putting the Niro in the same class as the Bolt on their selection screen even though the Niro is bigger all over. My wife hates the Bolt size (she calls it a clown car), so we are crossing our fingers that we are not forced to take that car or do a costly upgrade.

Eh, base ID.4 is slightly cheaper and gets the full tax credit, also a bit larger for more room.

As a Canadian that charge port is horrific, unless it is very strongly heated. Any wet road in the winter will turn the front of your car in to an ice plate. I'd much rather they bring back the old school gas vehicle by having the charge port underthe back license plate.

We just bought a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD Limited. The HDA is amazing. We're taking it on a road trip in a couple of weeks and are keeping fingers crossed that the infrastructure in our are isn't as hosed as it seems to be out west. I REALLY hope EA gets their acts together - but cannot help but be cynical as they've been at the forefront of making charging as torturous as humanly possible for years now.

The Niro EV as a pa Kate makes perfect sense for our family. Here in MALTA however you can seemingly only get heated seats with the highest trim and this trim is expensive- €45,000. That is only €5,000 away from a base EV6 also from KIA. Now the EV6 is too big for us but I couldn’t justify the Niro EV price to make the purchase.

Wait! That's my car! Same color and trim and everything! I absolutely love it, I've had it since November! I do get about 230-250 with 80mph highway driving, and the drive assist features are pretty dang good! One thing I put in the front trunk? That little shelf is perfect for a four pack of Crumbl cookies. The trunk is I think an issue with the one you have; mine doesn't have that issue. On highways at 80mph I get about 2.7kw/h; if I'm in town I tend to get 3.5+. The winter package has a heated steering wheel and if you have the Kia access app you can turn on the heated steering wheel but not the seats. I'm still losing my mind, I NEVER see the 23 Niro reviewed!

I have the '22 version, and love it. Only downside is the back up alarm, but we use it to commute about 120 miles a day and it's perfect, especially since we got the fed tax return from purchasing last year.

I totally agree with most everything you said in this video. My wife and I are owned and drive a 2019 and a 2020 Hyundai ioniq electric. If we were to do a review of them it would sound almost exactly like the one you just did. Hyundai and Kia have nailed it any EV space for the average consumer I just need to build their batteries and vehicles in the US and get a move on!

Hey Ho! I own a 2019 Niro BEV and note the following for comparisons. You CAN buy an aftermarket front trunk for the Niro [which I did] . and the Kona. I think it was left out of the production versions for cost reasons. The tyres on wet roads is ALL in the tyre on the EV. I have "Sailon" branded tyres on mine and there are no issues with wet roads/traction. Last, the top trim spec. gets the heated wheel, sunroof, better navigation &tc. And the 'comparison' of Niro vs Tesla is bogus. The Niro does not have Tesla 'looking into your skivvies' all day, no Tesla flawed business model. The interior in the Niro is better, or perhaps, normal. The Tesla 'looks like a hospital waiting room with a transistor powered TV set. Yes you can road trip this if you plan ahead and are not 'hell bent to get there ; stick a cork in my pizzle, and just DRIVE'. I do road trips with mine, and cannot complain of the experience. In sum BOTH generations of the Niro are perfectly fine. In the 0st generation version, if you chose to so buy it-- get the Upper Trim, EX Premium Its an EXECEPTIONAL EV!.

If you want value the Bolt EUV Premier without options is really the way to go for a budget around-town car especially once you factor in the tax credits (the Niro ends up being almost double the net price of the EUV). I would rather have a base Model 3 or a base ID4 over the Niro regardless of tax credits. Speaking of the base model ID4 - do you plan to review one of those with the smaller pack?

About ripping the charge plug out of the car - SAEJ1772 connecters are designed so that the pilot signal is lost first, before the power pins. Per J1772, the car is supposed to stop charging extremely quickly, so that current will be zero by the time the power pins are removed. This should help reduce arcing.

I just bought a new pre refresh 2022. A local dealer had it sitting around. Got a great deal one it, could not pass it up. It’s my first EV plus I needed something high sitting because of my crazy tall wife is disabled mother.

I rented the previous version for a week and really liked it.

This car is definitely built for charging at home. But to charge at the 46 amps one needs to install at least a 50 Amp circuit. Is there any on board software that can limit the charging current if one only has a 15, 20, or 30 Amp circuit? There seemed to be a lot of internal noise within the car (tire road noise? Wind noise?).

The 2023 Niro is the perfect size for me. I test drove a Wave trim model and loved it. The high price is keeping me from buying it right away, but dealers here in Southern California are getting more supply and they're starting to deal. If Kia were to offer a thousand or two cash rebate, I'd jump.

I shopped this car hard, but the Model Y made it impossible to justify, since I could afford $47k total price after tax credit. The base hybrid is by far the best value, but don't look at the options because they've done a great job making you want to step up to the next trim, then the plug-in, then the EV, and you end up right back at the Model Y again.

I’ve been considering it to replace my lease on Bolt EUV. was debating between Niro EV or Model 3 base. Seems Niro EV offers much more affordable lease than Tesla Model 3

I drive the 2019 hybrid. I do really small town driving and a lot of long road trips. I think the PHEV would be a better fit for me. FOr a full EV, I think that I would like the Hyundai Ionic 6 long range 2wd.

I ordered one of these in October for May delivery. Now delivery is pushed back to mid-July. Nine month wait.This in in France, I curious about other countries.

I have a model y performance but looking forward to Hyundai coming out with ev size of Palisades. Have you heard anything about that vehicle.

Leased a 23’ Kona for my wife and wish we looked at the Kia a little closer. The Kona doesn’t have the front storage or the V2L adapter. And as you mentioned is slightly smaller for storage in the back. We find the Kona too small but had a very limited selection so we leased it hoping things would improve in the next 3 yrs.

The trunk noise seems to be the same recurrent problem that the ioniq 5 has. The plastic lugs that are supposed to keep the trunk from having some play are badly adjusted

and you can take delivery in fairly short order here in Canada another plus!

I do feel like comparing this to a Bolt is the closest comparison, but with the tax credit you can get a bolt for almost half the price in a base trim. Same 11.5kW onboard charger, same size battery. Just the Niro charges 50% faster on DCFC.

It's weird it says on their website headlight projector beam headlight so I assume that's incandescent but all the other lights are LED. The daylight running lights the tail lights the interior lights all LED

I own an Electric Nero since last October. I think there is a design fault in the interior dash, where to change the heating you have to press the button down from the radio and media. This is not so safe to be doing while driving. I also wouldn’t recommend it for long road trips, as there is problems getting to chargers that are working. There is a problem with the charging system in this country (Ireland) not enough of them.

One of the best "not from the ground up" EVs. If it would qualify for the $7,500 rebate, now that would be something. Definitely better than a Bolt. It beats it even in charging even though the Bolt is a from the ground up electric vehicle. What does that say about GM?

What battery are they using? LG or someone else?

Had a 2019 model and loved it. Selling my Ioniq 5 and going back to Niro EV.

Just for some extra info. The future version of Kona is said to will have grown a bit too, with significantly more cargo space and all that. I'm curious about what the price will be. As for price, Kona also sells (at least here in Europe) with a 40kWh battery. I have the 2022 model with this smaller battery, similarly to this Niro, it is a great all-around car. A bit smaller on the cargo size and a bit uncomfortable for road trips (especially with this smaller battery ‒ charging infra is OK-ish around here, but the driving vs charging ratio is kind of bad), but cheaper than that Tesla model 3 SR. I think it is the cheapest EV that is actually somewhat capable of any kind of road trip, all the cheaper EVs don't have active battery cooling.

So the Tesla model 3 gets a pass on a possible 1 year half rebate but the Chevy Bolt gets no pass even though it qualifies for a full rebate? Supercruise for $30k!

3:11 The connector is not the only thing which is broken on this unit. Look at the cable management.

Battery is now made by CATL, and it is NCM chemistry.

Kyle! Come to Western Canada (Manitoba and Saskatchewan) where you have maybe if you are lucky... 2 DC Chargers every 200-250KM+ (125-155Miles+)

our top trim Limited here in Canada has fully openable sun roof, LED Projection head lights cooled seats on and on, and after the Federal and provincial (BC rebates) CAD$45,000.00 before taxes. We may trade in our stellar 2020 Kia Soul EV Limited for Niro EV Limited, it has slighter better charging specs (battery preconditioning and somewhat route / charger planing), quieter more room and with the longer wheel base more compliant. We have done 45K KM long distance road trips, was great in 2020 to 2021 but now those chargers are failing and more cars are turning up to charge not a win win here in Canada.

The Niro EV has some advantages (slightly bigger, heat pump, faster DCFC) over the Bolt... BUT for the price difference between a Bolt EUV and Niro EV it is VERY hard to justify. Before the tax rebate (Kia losing it and Chevy gaining it) and before Chevy dropped the price, this would have been a good contender to the Bolt. Also agree that you can get a Model Y for about the same price and a significantly more advanced vehicle.
