I actually really enjoy the “inner ear eye not agreeing” feeling. That is why I love the roller coaster videos on the oculus (especially standing up) and my family thinks it’s funny seeing me sway all over the place.

Honestly I'd like to see a game come out from Harmonix that's a conducting game for a virtual orchestra that uses higher-quality MIDI to adjust for tempo and dynamics like Wii Music did. Not only would they have a ton of songs from public domain classical compositions, but there could be a desktop app or website tool that could allow people to make their own compositions and share on the game for others to play with like the GH Studios or Clone Hero (making it user-made songs would hopefully take liability away from the developer for the inevitable scores of copyrighted songs that would be made for the game by users).

it’s nice this actually feels like a collab. it’s not two people squished together because it brings more views, it’s actually well done. instead of ice cream sandwich being present for a minute and calling it a collab, they’re both present throughout the video and provide value.

I know this video is a year old, but *wow* this is a great way to break this down. I’m senior in college working in VR development, and you’ve really hit the nail on the head for a lot of the issues we talk about during the design process of different experiences. A lot of your points my VR capstone professor, who has worked in the field for 30 years, brought up in our lectures. Kudos to you for a great video :)

Anyone can get acclimated to artificial locomotion. You just have to do it right. Take the HMD off when you begin to feel uncomfortable, come back when it has completely resided (but don't take too long of a break, like a few days, or your acclimation will restart). Takes a few weeks to a month to get acclimated, opening the door to the best VR has to offer in very intense immersive experiences.

I recently completed half life alyx and it was a great experience which addresses a lot of the problems brought up in this video, your hands are physical objects but are still tied to your body relatively, and your head/body aren’t physical objects, also helps that it looks really good and has a great physics engine.

Ok, I watched this a few times a while ago and I ABSOLUTELY forgot that they mentioned doom, honestly, I love doom mostly because of the violence but also because of all the cool guns, the Xbox original doom was what got me into it and now I'll watch my dad play it all the time, or when ever he is playing it, but yea, I enjoy games similar to doom as well like call of duty (specifically black ops zombies), halo, wolfenstiene and a bunch others we don't need to mention. This strange liking caused me to also enjoy horror movies ALOT more, like the tomorrow War, a quiet place and a quiet place part two (i know they aren't horror movies, but there's lots of violence in them, also you should definitely watch them 10 out of 10 from me) sorry for wasting your time anyone who read this.

After the first day of putting VR on and taking it off, I felt like the real world didn't feel real and my hands didn't feel like my own. But after a month of playing in VR I noticed I didn't get motion sick, at all, ever, and I could stay in VR for 9 hours straight with no problems if I felt like it. So mabye exposure therapy can actually work.

It super does, at least in my anecdotal experience, with the exception of a few very badly designed games of course. Every single person I've run through it with motion sickness, if they tough out just a bit of windlands they get used to it, but that bit of windlands is a real process sometimes.

With the power of hindsight and reverse time travel (i.e. letting time just go forward) I'm really glad the Oculus Go was a thing. It was baby's first VR, with no Z axis, just up and down, left and right. It got me used to the notion of VR and by the time I got a Quest 2, I was kicking ass in Blade and Sorcery with no issues. Motion sickness is a thing, I get it in long car rides in larger vehicles, but VR oddly enough has cured me of the opposite kind of motion sickness, so now I can pull off sick flips on games like Hellsweeper.

Echo VR handles movement similar to Boneworks. The only reason why I don't get motion sick with it is because my brain is able to adapt to how in the game I am not walking by using a thumbstick, but I am flying with a jetpack by pressing a button. You can also move by grabbing a wall and throwing yourself off of it. It works because the game is in a zero-g environment. My brain expects the motion without any real world movement because in the game I am flying. My legs don't need to move to do that. Racing games like Assetto Corsa, iRacing, and American Truck Simulator also work well in VR. (Except when you crash your vehicle.) Some people used to racing in real life will have some difficulty as they are used to the g-forces from the car and not having that is removing a sense you would be using to drive. The point is that your field of vision is moving when you are in a car sitting down and not moving yourself. One driving game that did get me motion sick was City Car Driving. It seems to be a good game outside of VR. In VR, the framerate drops so much when making a 90 degree turn that it made me sick. They may have fixed that since I played, although I doubt it. This is also why games where you fly a plane (Microsoft Flight Simulator) or a spaceship (Elite Dangerous) also work well in VR. Pretty much, even with a lot of motion although you yourself are stationary, as long as your brain interprets that as you in a vehicle, most people will not get motion sick by moving this way without teleportation. There were some physical room experiences where you can move around a large area physically in real life. There was a Ghostbusters VR experience and a Star Wars one from this company called The Void. They had a large enough room where the video game level was configured to match the real life room's layout, allowing players to move around physically. Sadly, this was shut down due to Covid. I've also seen videos of people playing Pavlov in a large room as well as someone playing a Beat Saber mod outdoors in a field. The level was so big it needed that much space. It's called Running in the 90 Lanes.

What’s good is that VR is becoming all that much more affordable now a days with the Oculus Quest 2 costing as much as some Consoles when maybe 5 years ago it was almost 700 to 1000 to get one and you had to deal with all the wires. VR is definitely in it’s infancy but it has a lot of room to grow and expand and for devs to find new ways to make the VR experience more enjoyable

Exposure therapy 100% worked for me, and even cured me of my real-life motion sickness, allowing me to enjoy things like intense theme park/fair rides again. When I first got my Oculus 2, anything with movement had me instantly nauseous. But I desperately wanted to play Alien Isolation in VR. So the first session I only made it about 5 minutes and had to stop. The next day I made it about 10 minutes, the next day ~15 minutes, etc. Once I hit about 30 minutes, I found I could just go indefinitely at that point, and finished the game which was one of the most immersive, intense gaming experiences I've ever had. Half-Life Alyx was similarly amazing. To my surprise, I found I could now handle all the spinning rides at the state fair with my kids (which definitely would have had me puking my guts out before). So that's what I recommend trying. Instead of turning on teleportation or other comfort features, try doing what you can reasonably handle, stop, and then sleep on it and do it again the next day and see if it slowly increases. It's so much more fun/immersive that way once you (hopefully) adapt.

@@ashenreality410 no, i literally like 95% of what i try in vr. Heck, Thrill of the Fight is part of my weekly workout routine, i fight twelve rounds a week in vr to complement my cardio when my leg joints are too fucked from cycling. boneworks is the exception. it's terrible and nauseating. their choice do "simulate a physical body" is the exact thing that made VR unbearable for most people and most devs try their hardest to avoid. i have pretty high tolerance for vr sickness and that game is the one to make me have a migraine every time i try it. Not to mention the huge tutorial part is annoying and i did not enjoy the game itself either for as far as i had played. i was coming from half life alyx with huge expectations because people said "boneworks is even better!" (even though alyx was freaking amazing), and then when i got to it, it was one of the biggest letdowns in my gaming life. It has this dumb policy that "everything has to be simulated" and they don't care what has to be sacrificed for that. The interactivity is cool and all, but it's definitively not worth the tradeoffs. not only it's not NEARLY as good as alyx (understandable, indie title vs huge blockbuster system seller), it actually made me feel terrible for a whole 30 hours AFTER I STOPPED PLAYING IT. i hate this game with all my might.

You mentioned being able to put your head in a wall, but there's another side effect of this. If you hold something in the game, you aren't holding anything in real life; you could pick up a car and spin it over your head, which your brain KNOWS is unrealistic. Objects in VR can't have presence or weight, which hugely effects the experience. If you DO give them weight and inertia, then your controllers and virtual hands can be in different places. Your brain gets really confused, your virtual body is being constrained but your real body isn't. For things like guns this is a huge deal, Stress Level Zero talked about this in a dev log; How can you make the gun recoil? If you remove recoil all shots are perfectly accurate and the guns feel weightless. If you add recoil like any other shooter, the player sees their hands and the gun moving when they are not. VR is a cool innovation, but the more games we experience in VR, the more fundamental flaws we find. It's like the uncanny valley, it feels way more realistic than other games, but given it's trying to digitally emulate the human body (which we're all accustomed to) we notice every way it deviates from reality. When you move your body and when the character moves become disconnected, which is disorientating. I don't know if we will solve this issue until we have full body suits with force feedback so virtual objects can exert force, or we control it with our minds using our eyes and ears while our body is completely stationary.

You know this video reminded me of when I was a kid and my Dad played Mario 64 with us for the first time. He loved video games when he was younger, held the high score on any of the space invader machines still in operation on our side of town. Just loved the stuff and was really excited to buy us a home console whose games 'looked amazing!'. He was puking and too sick to play within a few seconds due to the 3d camera in Mario 64. He slowly got better over the years and now it doesn't bother him at all. Which is odd because he's an engineer and does RND so he's been using auto cad/other 3d modeling software since the stuff was invented pretty much. He says it was the camera moving while the character moved in the game without his direct control moving the camera that made him sick. I don't know much, but I know alot of older people with similar stories about the first time they played a 3d video game. I think the two are similar in some respect personally.

Code Lyoko will soon be reality. I have a friend who is designing a fullbody vr suit that whenever your virtual self makes contact with something in the game, the suit blasts a puff of air in the same parts of your body to simulate your body actually interacting with the wall or a sword, etc. Pairing it with those VR walking simulation treadmill thingies that let people walk around irl so they don't get motion sick in the games and it might be the closest we can get to fully immersive VR
