Hello Everyone and Welcome back! Its finally here! This video will showcase my newest incarnation of my ever popular Ur Dragon Deck! This deck features some of the newest dragons released over the past year, some very strong and powerful new spells, some great budget options and even some spicy card choices. Although the deck at some point went through some major overhaul, ultimately I have settled on a similar vision as before. As mentioned, I did test out a dedicated Treasure Themed deck as well as a deck that strictly focused more on large splashy creatures. Those builds were explosive but often the results weren't consistent and hard to recover when interrupted. I chose to scrap those in favor of this as not only do I think this list is better and overall stronger but it remains true to the strategy of curving out and taking advantage of The Ur Dragons Eminence ability to maximize our plays. This is a hardnose build that aims to start deploying value based Dragons starting on turn 3-4 such as Ojutai, Guardian Scalelord, and Rith to set the pace and accumulate value. In addition the deck is packed with tutors for optimization. From there we are able to establish an aggressive pace in the game. Once we have stabilized, the table starts to become oppressed as the effects from cards like Dragon Tempest, Kindred Discovery, Scourge of Valkas start to stack up. We can then look for one of our many haymakers such as Last March of the Ents to close the game! It has been a while so this is a long one. The list for Moxfield will have any additional real time changes I will make in the future. With that, enjoy the video and remember to like comment and subscribe. As always engagement and feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

Awesome deck tech. Love just listening to selection of dragon choices. I powered down the deck a bit by making some cuts. Nothing against these cards or people who use these cards, I just prefer a bit more slow and battle-cruisery Commander. For anybody who is interested here's what I did and my reasonings below: - Cuts: Deathrite Shaman, Dockside Extortionist, Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, All 5 Tutors, Ancient Tomb, Gaea's Cradle, Urza's Saga, Hall of Heliods Generosity, Yavimaya Hollow. + Adds: Scaled Nurturer, Bloomtender, Farseek, Dragon's Hoard, Magda, Rivaz, Return of the Wildspeaker, Klauth Unrivaled Ancient, Utvara Hellkite, x1 of each basic land. 14 Card Cut total. Deathrite is better in higher power tables. Feels underwhelming in lower power tables without many fetches to use in the graveyard. It just becomes kinda bad pseudo grave hate. Scaled Nurturer is a easy dork replacement. It even costs only G thanks to Ur Dragon. Dockside wins games too fast and can generate you ludicrous mana. A good 2-3 color mana dork like a Bloom Tender works wonders in this spot of getting mana without feeling oppressive. Jeweled Lotus and Mana Crypt are both just insanely fast. Either everyone's using it at the pod or nobody should imo. Same applies to Sol Ring but, Sol Rings dirt cheap we all just run it. Lotus is not that bad, especially when you have a high CMC commander like Ur Dragon or Gishath. But when somebody with a low CMC commander gets it and sets up an insane board turn 1 it can feel really bad. Just adding a Farseek and a Dragon's Hoard is good replacement here. Fetching more lands for 2 mana and getting to choose between mana or card draw off Dragons Hoarde is nice. Removing the 5 tutors is both a budget and deck building choice. Tutors win games and some have come down in price. But tutors usually result in you going for the same stuff over and over and can make games get repetitive very quickly, imo. In place of the 5 tutors I added 1 very thematic tutor: Magda. She can search out any dragon (or artifact) we want. Since the deck can get overboard with generating treasures, she feels like an excellent treasure payoff. Running something like a Magda also lets you be a bit more creative with your dragon selection. Like running a Thrakkus/Swashbuckler for when you wanna close out games. Or grabbing one of our dragons that generates tokens. If you have an insane surplus of treasures you can even go for like a Terror of the Peaks or something and just burn people to death by comboing out all your dragons. She's very powerful, but we also don't have a way to tutor her out to instantly win the game. And none of the cEDH artifact infinite mana combos either so. Her power is somewhat reigned in by those factors in this deck. Aside from Magda, for the other 4 slots I added in 2 extra big dragons (Klauth gets us more mana to play with, Utvara gets us more bodies to play with), Rivaz is a dork and lets us recur our dragons in the graveyard. Doubles as ramp and reanimator, great card. And then Return of the Wildspeaker can draw us a lot of cards or be used to close out the game by pumping creatures as a combat trick. A Rishkars could go well here too. But Last March of the Ents kinda does something similar so I wanted to diversify a little bit. If you don't like Klauth or Utvara you could cut them for a different dragon or more card draw. Honorable mentions here are Thrakkus for big pump, Balefire Dragon for one-sided board wipes, and Cavernhoard Dragon for a big beater that gets cost reducted and gives us lots of treasures. Ancient Tomb/Gaea's/Urza's are all pretty up there in price and big haymaker lands. Ancient Tomb is a Mana Crypt on a land, Gaea's needs no introduction, and Urza's is cracked when running the fast mana. Since we cut Lotus/Crypt Urza's is a dead card in the deck. Gaea's is just too expensive. And Ancient Tomb is Mana Crypt on a land with a steep price point. I chose to cut two of the utility lands as well (Yavimaya and Heliods) so that I could cut 5 lands total and just slot in 5 basics. Deck is shocking itself a lot when you run a 5 mana base with all the fetches and shocks. Now we can fetch some lands without putting ourselves in the danger zone. There's also a lot of cards that people play which incidentally have "Opponent may search their library for a basic land" (Like Assassin's Trophy lol) and I want to be able to capitalize on those effects when I can. There's obviously other staples and cards you could cut to make it even FURTHER BUDGET as far as some interaction goes. But ultimately dragons and 5C mana bases will be pricey. So this is the best compromise of saving money while also toning down power level. Other good targets to cut if you'd like are Cyclonic Rift, Mana Drain, Teferi's Protection, Great Henge, Rhystic Study, and Smothering Tithe.

@@IDraken1221 Thank you! I consider it a starting point at least. And its definitely not the most budget you can make the list. Klauth, Utvara, and Bloomtender are all like in the 10-20 dollar range. But it beats like 50-70 dollar range per card. Dragons, 5C Mana Base, and Budget unfortunately don't mix very well. But I love dragons. One of my favorite creature archetypes in MTG and a worthwhile investment. A lot of these cards I even use outside of Ur Dragon and in more focused color identity commanders. Miirym for clones, combo, and value. Ziatora for power doubling, flinging, and reanimating. And Klauth as a Big Mana style dragon with some X Spells, Extra Combat spells (Has to be cast), etc.

Hypothetically speaking of course. If you had all dual lands too would you just substitute all the pain lands for them or would you change up your land package more having them inserted? Just curious since I thought a heard a slight hint you’d consider it someday if the prices weren’t as uncertain

I added patchwork banner as a mana rock. It's cool cause you choose a creature type and creatures of that type get a +1/+1 and you can tap the artifact for 1 mana of any color. It's a 3 generic mana cost so not bad imo. I also added ancient cornucopia. It's a 3 drop mana rock 2 generic 1 green, it's taps for one mana of any color, but depending on how many different color pips a spell is you heal that much. So if you use it to cast klauthe for example you get 2 health or if you use it to cast scion of the ur dragon you heal 5. I think it's nice because it heals you from using things like mana crypt, your fetches, shock lands or an ancient tomb.

I like jeweled lotus generally but I took it out. My issue is that UR dragon is a 9 mana drop. If you play it too soon people will prep removal or counters and if your holding onto it at the exact moment you can cast the ur dragon. It's usually burning a hole in your hand for multiple turns. I personally feel like you can replace jeweled lotus with a different mana rock. Especially one that isn't as obvious and you can put to use as soon as you draw it. I have mox amber for example if you want another 0 drop mana rock. The deck has a lot of legendaries so I don't see it being a problem. You can also have a medallion instead. I counted and I have 27 cards in my deck that would benefit from a ruby medalian, in addition to the the ur dragon discount. I also may throw emerald medallion in their because I have 11 cards that would benefit from it, but I'm iffy on that.

I think this is the first video I've watched about someone's Ur-Dragon deck that isn't just a terribly built deck with someone bragging about their expensive cards. I've seen people just put in the most outdated "bling" in their decks thinking they have this monster of a deck and then it's like chromatic lantern into Nicol Bolas or something. Ooof. You have actually valid (or at leat understandable) reasons for your card choices and you seem to be one of the few people who realize that common and uncommon dragons from Baldur's Gate exist. (e.g. Scaled Nurturer, Lozhan etc.). And just generally you mention such a high amount of really valid (more or less budget) alternatives. Such a great video. The only thing I'm just a tiny bit unhappy about is the amount of general "good stuff" in the deck (e.g. Smothering Tithe, Mana-Drain and friends). Like, I get it for ramp (and for counterspells and pinpoint removal) because there aren't many strong options besides Scaled Nurturer but even if I already have Goldspan Dragon in the deck I'd still play Ganax over Tithe any day in Ur-Dragon because where am I going to play these cards, if not in a Dragon deck? Ganax obviously makes less treasures than Tithe, but he's also a 3/4 flyer for 4 DRAGON that synnergizes with all the things that care about dragons. And it may be blasphemous, but for the same reason I'd play Iymrith, Desert Doom over Kindred Discovery. MOAR DRAGONS. PS: Maybe consider "Raise the Palisade" over cyclonic rift? Rift is still better because it bounces all non-lands but Raise the Pallisade only costs 5. -> you can make sure your card drawing dragons connect.
@IDraken1221
@IDraken1221 3 ай бұрын
Hey! That’s for your engagement and feedback on things! I know sometimes 5 color can become good stuff.dek but this is my only list where I’m prioritizing all power. I have variants I play with where o choose different cards and styles. I am using Raise the Palisade in my sliver deck. Rift is too strong to cut in my opinion but I do believe it can be better than Cruz of Fate? 🤔🤔🤔

So it just came down to choice and I chose to have the big Treasure makers like Cooper and Gnawbone. If you feel you can find room I’d def play it! I’m trying to see if I can find room still. The jist of it all is running 31 lands (10 shocks, 10 fetches, urza saga, command tower, mana confluence, cavern of souls, bosiju who shelteres all, ancient tomband 5 basics) grim monolith,crypt, vault, mox diamond/opal and chrome mox. Ragavan!!!. Insert those along with dropping shaman for both hierarchs. Drop jeweled lotus for lotus petal. There are other things and tbh I’m hesitant to give out the secret because i don’t want to add to all the net decking everywhere but those will immediately make the deck more lethal. The dragons could also use some work but I can assure you once the deck is done it can run with ANYTHING out there.

@@untilthewheelsfalloff1751 it seems like you’ve opted for a cEDH level mana base given the low land count as well as cEDH level ramp. I can see the point but I’m trying to aim for overall high power without trying to be a cEDH level deck. In the same vein although Ur Dragon is strong, the card design itself doesn’t lean into something cEDH would want. Just my opinion though. On paper though it’s great card choices if you’re trying to break the cEDH ceiling. The list you provided is just fast mana and lands? I’m curious as to what some of the win cons are if you are playing cEDH and how fast you win as well as some of the lines of play.

Thanks for the feedback! As for Incubator, depending on the build the deck plays between 25-29 Dragons. Although the discount is BIG it only discounts 30% of the deck, unless you double spell Dragons which changes the math. Plus the Ur Dragons discount is usually enough. I wouldn’t fault you for playing it though! Just need some more dragons and to change up the ramp package.

I kicked mine out after having it in hand too often when something able to produce color or with cheaper mana cost would have been needed. Fellwar Stone/Arcane Signet is better most of the time because it comes down quicker, discounts every card in the deck once a turn and fixes color. The 2 mana discount isn´t really that great because the dragons are already discounted and colorless mana is easy to produce with cards like sol ring, mana crypt and maybe mana vault if you choose to play it. Most of the times, not more than one dragon hits the board per turn and that is just not enough value for a 3 mana rock like Urzas Incubator. I think it reads nice but in actual game play it leaves much to be desired.

The Ur-Dragon (understandably) paints a massive target on you from the start of the game. Do you have any advice on handling that? I tried a deck with him out the other day and my most notable finding was that Shock/Fetch Lands' LP payments became a much more significant downside than usual because of being the archnemesis out the gate. I also found that cards like Morophon or Firkraag performed very poorly because they need to stay on the field for a long time to do anything, leaving them open to removal. So I suspect that powerful ETB effects, as well as attack triggers paired with Haste enablers like you've included will perform better. I'll be cribbing heavily from this decklist to brew another try.
@chearle91
@chearle91 7 ай бұрын
I found the solution to this in my play group was to make my deck a bit faster so they exhaust all their removal on my early permanents. With OP's permission I'll post my list so you can have some ideas, but basically my strategy is to flood the board so fast and so often my opponents cant really handle it. In my play group, when I play my Ur Dragon deck its referred to as 'my free win for the day'.
@Carwinley
@Carwinley 7 ай бұрын
@@chearle91 That's in line with what I was thinking too. One thing talked about during the game was "Always hit the Dragon player before they get rolling", and the deck I had been playing was focussed around getting the biggest Dragons possible out. Thinking on it after that chance to test, I reckon that the best way to capitalise on the Big UD isn't for him to make the really-expensive dudes into slightly-less-expensive dudes, but to bring everything down into 'reasonably-priced dudes' territory. In hindsight, it's the exact same theory I have behind my Angel Tribal deck; Giada being a mana dork means the expensive Angels are effectively 1 cheaper, but that doesn't make it a good idea to run 99 Avacyns.

Why not use the world tree as a lamd for early mana fixing?
@IDraken1221
@IDraken1221 10 ай бұрын
You can! It’s a fine land to play. The mana base here doesn’t have room for many tapped lands, the only one in here is the triome. In a near perfect mana base there’s really not a need to have any fixing like that even if it is on a land. That said, it’s still a solid choice especially for a mana base that’s missing lands or if you don’t mind more tapped lands just a preference though.
@patrick6190
@patrick6190 9 ай бұрын
@@IDraken1221 I would use tarnished citadel instead of the world tree if there is a need for mana fixing. Tarnished Citadel is most of the time just a colorless land except for the situations you realy need it. As you said, a perfect mana base needs no fixing in the later turns and in the rare cases where you need it in the early turns, tarnished citadel shines. For my Ur-Dragon Deck it solved the issue of possible early game colorscrew without needing to play any taplands. Mulligans are also much better with tarnished citadel. And regarding the three damage: most of the time, the land only needs to be tapped for color once a game but exactly the moment it´s critical to hit a certain color. It sets up draw engines or something like Three Visits, maybe a tutor and after that the color issues are usually immediately solved.

@@IDraken1221 I think they're decent rattlesnake cards. But there's also just so many dragons that you can build like ten vastly different Dragon decks with them and have a very different focus each time. Like, you could absolutely play a "treasure's matter" dragon-deck, which also runs token doublers to double treasures as well as any dradon tokens you create. Then there's the sacrifice theme, where you're balancing fewer dragons with a couple of dragons that have devour or bargain-effects. Then you can also just play generic good stuff, which a lot of people seem to be playing (e.g. they put cards like Cyclonic Rift, Deflecting Swat etc.) which I kind of like the least because there's a thousands of cards out there and people just slap Rhystic Study into their Ur-Dragon deck and call it a day and it's just super lazy deck-building to me. And of course there's combo -> mostly Scion of the Ur-Dragon and a bunch of tutors. So I think context is super important. Like just because a Dragon is "really good" doesn't mean it goes into every single Dragon deck.
@IDraken1221
@IDraken1221 3 ай бұрын
I agree the context and type of strategy helps. One of the great things about Dragons is the endless possibilities! You make some great points! I think it all boils down to where you want to go as a player. In a 5 color deck going for power it’s easy to fall into generically good cards, that’s kind of the nature of it. With that said there’s plenty of other good options and choices that would work just as good or better!

I really don’t like the number scale. I just label it as “high power”

High power EDH! Cards like Cradle, Coffers, Tomb, and more all allowed in our group! We also make sure to discuss when playing outside of your group. In addition our decks usually pack land or “any permanent” removal. In addition Cradle plays pretty fair here in relation to something like Elf Ball

that's a bit of a hot take. Maybe if you're playing combo. But why are you playing combo and then not have scion of the ur-dragon be your commander?
