The US drug abuse epidemic is killing 300 Americans a day | The Bottom Line

Purdue Pharma introduced the opioid painkiller OxyContin in the 1990s and promoted it aggressively as non-addictive.
United States government lawyers argued that the company’s owners, the Sacklers, knew how their medication was being abused widely, but doubled down on production - and profits. Recently a lawsuit was settled for $6bn.
Barry Meier, the author of Pain Killer (soon to be a Netflix series), started writing about the opioid epidemic 20 years ago when it was killing about 20,000 people yearly. He tells host Steve Clemons how corporate greed and government dithering have led that number to exceed 100,000 deaths last year alone.

I visited the states in the 90’s and I noticed the readiness to pop pills for headache (and the pills in USA they are strong) whereas where I am from one does not take pills for headaches but rather one tries a glass of water and some fresh air first. Most people don’t have any pills in their bathroom cabinet in my country.Americans just like the easy way for most things. I had a head on collision in the late ‘90’s and due to the soft tissue damage done to my body and especially my back, I experienced awful pain 24hrs a day and had no life, I still cannot lay down on my back. They prescribed opioids which was slightly helping me but eventually they prescribed Oxy Cotin around 2005 and it changed my life. It allowed me to work normally and become productive again as I was prior to the accident. I asked and they kept telling me it is not addictive due to its new slow release formula, I bought the lie. 4 years ago I decided to retire early and to get off these pills due to side effects which were affecting me. The first 3 days after stopping were a little uncomfortable but all good now. I thank God I did not end up being a statistic and lose everything I cherish in life. Today, I manage the pain without opioids, but my activity level has dropped off dramatically, usually lasting 4 hours before getting off my feet. They swung the pendulum 180 in the opposite direction, people with chronic pain like myself, are being denied pain relief of any kind. This could lead to sever depression and possible suicide, I know because it happened to me and for a year needed phycological intervention. Of course, this is my personal experience only.

It’s interesting because I’ve been experiencing excruciating lower back pain for over a year, and have undergone seven various treatments from my doctors for pain management until most my recent treatment that is somewhat effective at reducing pain. I was prescribed otc Tylenol for pain until I suffered a whole body muscle spasm that sent me to the ER. Finally, I was prescribed non-addictive muscle spasm medicine to be taken at bedtime. Tomorrow I get to go to the pain management clinic that has expressed in writing that it does not prescribe any opioids to their patients. This should be interesting. Perhaps they’ll allow anti-inflammatory medicine for my arthritis. Whiskey?

This is absolutely bonkers. The people who abuse prescription pills have made it so difficult for the people who actually need the medications. I had brain cancer, 10 hour open surgery, and 3 weeks in ICU. When I was released, I was only provided medication for a week! A WEEK! With swelling and over 100 staples still in my head. My PC doctor said it was new regulations with narcotics becos people were purposely harming themselves to get these pain pills. I couldn't believe it. I was in so much pain! And healing from the surgery, actually took longer because I was in so much pain.

People automatically assume that everyone has a drug addiction gene that gets activated in there system when that’s not the case for me and I’m sure it’s not the case for many others! Medication is much more responsibly prescribed in the UK. There is no way a doctor would prescribe a cancer opiod for everyday pain relief and for stronger drugs you need NHS prescriptions, not even GP prescribed. For most pain relief, over the counter drugs are absolutely fine. No need to use stronger coedine and morphine based opiods unless you've had an operation or suffer from organ pain (gallstones, kidney stones) or you need constant severe pain relief due to cancer or something else that has a dehabilitating effect. The USA are so money orientated they put profit before people every time. Couple that with no NHS free meds at the point of use, no wonder people manage their pain from illegal drugs eventually - if they are cheaper than medical insured legitimate drugs. What if you can't afford medical insurance?

That is your choice but I was on opioid analgesics after chest wall surgery that I only used to relieve pain. I had previously been a heroin addict so was acutely aware of the dangers of dependence, but if you use them just for pain relief and reduce off them, there is zero risk of addiction. The problem only occurs when people start deceiving themselves and their treating doctors - pretending their pain is worse than it actually is because they’re really using the medication to get high instead of just to relieve pain.

Opioids are not usually the default treatment for joint or muscle pain - usually they use non-steroidal anti-inflammatories - which are not addictive. If your doctors are prescribing anti-inflammatories like Diclofenac you should be taking them, not be tearing up the prescriptions.

The pharmaceutical industry is the problem. Synthetic opiate Methadone is just as effective a pain reliever as other opiates and has a 24 hour half life (much longer than any naturally derived opiate analgesic) and does _not_ produce the same euphoria as other opioids, but because it’s cheap and not under patent pharmaceutical companies can’t make a profit off it so it’s not marketed for pain relief - instead it’s only used to treat addicts in recovery, and (poor) patients with terminal cancer etc.

Its interesting because I remember hearing about a study which found that addictions occurred in people that were in abusive or unhealthy environments. The deaths from opioid addiction may raise bigger questions as to why people are in a mental state where they are becoming addicted. It's a fair point that it may be irresponsible and negligent to supply opioids without checking a patients vulnerability to addiction

Since the new drug regulations on opioids deaths in 2016 were 63,000 per year... now the latest numbers are 100,000+! The drug addicts receive no assistance or help getting off illegal meds while real chronic pain patients have been blamed and demonized for the addiction issue. I stopped all care for my chronic condition. A doctor recently asked me to trust him... my response, "Don't use big words you don't understand!" Chronic Pain patients did not create the problem, but we certainly are paying the price for it!

I absolutely agree with you. The problem is far worse now. It was a disaster to take this out of the hands of medical professionals. I’m in my 70’s and while I sympathize with doctors, I can handle my own pain at home, thank you. I don’t need to pay you to watch me suffer. I can do it myself at home for free. Meanwhile people are buying “percs” on the street…unaware that it’s actually fentanyl made in someone’s bathtub with no idea what the dosage is. Not only did they not fix the problem…they made it far worse.

I was (mis)diagnosed with not only SAD and Anxiety disorder but Chemical-imbalance which has been formerly known as alcoholism/drug addiction, I fell into the trap of accepting the "fact" that I'm going to die a Heroin addict and an Alcoholic, tossed my career, all my possessions, marriage, relationship with my loved ones, down the drain to become a career "street pharmacist". I traded my brother's and sisters marriages, my grandparents funerals, quality time with my close friends and loved ones for a circular-life fueled by addiction, violence, pain, anger, withdrawal and blaming others for the mistakes I made. Meanwhile God was patiently waiting and protecting me... Although it took me well over 10 years, I gave up the self-reliant lifestyle to our Lord Jesus Christ and my dad at least got to see his son come home before he passed from a heart-attack in my hands on the bathroom floor. Although I really, really miss him, I can't wait to join him in praising God for everything good He has done in my life...

Pakistan has 759 pharmacutical units operated by 650 manufacturing pharmaceutical companies. Last year due to floods & foreign exchange crisis. Letter of credit was not given to importers so thousands of containers were help up at Karachi port. They contained diagnostic equipments, lentils & pharmaceuticals etc. Pharmacutical salt was one of the items too. It approx takes 6months for a medicine to reach market & its shelf life is 2 or 3 years at most. Accoding to my pharmacist due to sun exposure & humadity. Pharmaceutic salt must hv lost its healing power in air tight containers at dockyards. Due to unavailabilty of salt. Pharmaceutics were unable to manufacture drugs in time & unable to dispatch it to markets. So it created a shortage of life saving drugs in market in Pakistan. We faced that challenge single handedly. Now Govt of Pakistan has allocated a budget of Rs26billion for health sector in National budget which is a positive sign

The current situation regarding the rise in fatalities resulting from illicit fentanyl overdose deserves our attention. It is important to note that these tragic incidents primarily involve illicitly manufactured fentanyl rather than prescribed opioids. The infiltration of fentanyl across our borders poses a significant threat to our society at large. While it is true that Purdue Pharma bore significant responsibility in the opioid crisis of the past decade, it is essential to distinguish their role from the ongoing challenges the United States is facing today. The issue of open borders warrants consideration as we seek to address this pressing concern.

so glad this topic is being talked about more. Honestly if we really want to go back all the way the 1940s The Rockefellers basically made it illegal to have any natural remedies in any of the medical books. So that really got the ball rolling with the basically wild West type of ambience. Then later on the sackler's would definitely take advantage that. On KZfaq, you can look up old commercials from the 90s Representatives that were pushing the use of oxycontin more would say that medication was less than 1% addictive. Not only did Purdue create the opiate crisis, they created the Suboxone crisis. Suboxone is a great stepping stone to get off heavy medications or heroin. But use over a long period Of time, it becomes almost impossible to get off. Then not only did they do all of that, they were able to at some point to produce vaccines and make even more money.

The FDA does not conduct or monitor clinical trials of new drugs - the drug manufacturers do. Purdue Pharmaceuticals only sponsored clinical trials (and manipulated the results) that supported their own marketing.
