As a German basketball fan, who had his "prime" during the early 90s, it's still hard to watch the German team loosing without any chance :) Above all, this wasn't a bad team, they won the European Championship in '93. But nothing and no one can compete with the '92 dream team, neither later teams from USA. This was the pinnacle of basketball.

What I like about the NBA superstars of the older eras is how great their fundamentals were. You can tell they know how to play against zones. They did not rely solely on flashiness and athleticism. They were well educated basketball players.

The skill level of players in particular shooting skills have really developed since then. A selection of the best players now would beat the original dream team. Just because something was in the past does not mean it was necessarily better. Some comments here suggest that someone's heydays necessarily coincide with the gold era of everything else.

@@omnivorous65 Well same goes to your comment, whatever's recent and "modern" does not mean it is better. A selection of the best player now would get beaten too by the 92' dream team especially if the 92' team gets the luxury of your "modern" training of shooting as you suggest. Plus MJ with current training and nutrition, he would be Zeus on steroids. It's the sound fundamental and mental toughness that the current generation of NBA players are lacking. It's all soft and cuddly nowadays.

Fun fact, in 1989, Doug Collins appointed Jordan to the point position for the last 24 games of the regular season. In those 24 games, he averaged 30.4 PPG, 9.2 RPG, and 10.7 APG, almost averaging a triple double and ended up getting 10 triple doubles in 11 games! Amazing!
@generalkang1969
@generalkang1969 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidkrappenschitz8864 That sounds impressive until you realize that LeBron James averaged 10.2 APG for an entire season, in his 17th season, age 35 (Jordan was 25, in his 5th season)... though, for the era of the late 80s, it was an impressive stat line...
@davidkrappenschitz8864
@davidkrappenschitz8864 2 жыл бұрын
@@generalkang1969 Yeah, and while Lebron’s stat line is impressive, the reason why Jordan never averaged more assists is because Pippen usually handled that aspect of the game, leaving Jordan to not really needing to distribute the ball. However the fact the Lebron was 35 really shows his longevity.

Lots of comments on these videos about the great players. But nobody seems to mention the real heart and lifeblood of this, the greatest basketball team ever assembled, the coaching staff. Dream Team 1 really had great chemistry. Other iterations weren' t the same in terms of their passing and team game and yeah the world got better but I think Dream Team 1's chemistry was really the hallmark of this team. And with most of the players6-8 years in the league already at least, they were not that young bad young enough in their primes. The next iterations were composed mostly of young superstars with a mix of some old heads but this one had them all in their primes except Bird. Magic was still at the tale ne do his prime here despite the long layoff.

People may not see it...but Jordan masterminded a diplomatic mission for the first Dream Team by keeping hothead Isaiah Thomas off it and keeping Barkley under control, and making sure everyone worked together. People think he was a control freak in the NBA...but this entire Olympic performance showed otherwise. All the other teams were treated with respect.

@@betteruin2294 Patently untrue. Prior to 1992 FIBA rules actually forbid NBA players from playing in Olympic tournaments, but other countries were allowed to utilize their top players from domestic leagues.

I’m not sure that makes what he said untrue? Take this German squad for example. They are 95% amateurs. Schrempf is the only one who was playing in the NBA and, quite frankly, any European league was akin to amateur level basketball in the USA. Not that I can confess whether any of these German players played in any recognised European pro league any ways!
