The USA wasn't using professional players in their Olympic teams until 1992... but what if they always did? What are some of the great What If teams of USA history, and how do they rank against all other USA teams?

The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

Would’ve been devastating. At that time, Russia gave us a lot of problems mainly because of their size . They would’ve been scary with a prime Kareem and Wilt. They wouldn’t have lost a game . I truly believe if they allowed our professionals to go over there a lot sooner , we wouldn’t lost at all in the 80’s , 1980 was boycotted by America so we throw that one out we won in 1984 with Jordan and Ewing in college, and lost in 1988 with David Roberson and Danny Manning . With the guys this gentleman just mentioned for that 1988 team, there is no way that team would ever have gotten beaten. They would’ve been the first dream team . The rest of the world has just caught up to us in talent but at that time, they were still a wavelength away from our pro guys . It would’ve been something like what we saw in 92 and 96 . Pure dominance!!! That is probably why they never allowed American professional players to participate in the Olympics until 1992 even though other countries have always used professionals . I believe that was totally unfair . I understand why after watching the dream team why they never wanted to face our professionals . Lol!!! It did make the rest of the world get a little better talent wise .

The 1987-88 season featured at least 22 Hall of Fame players: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman, Adrian Dantley, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, Alex English, Dominique Wilkins, Patrick Ewing, Scottie Pippen, Reggie Miller. It was one of the greatest seasons in NBA history as well: MVP race between MJ, Bird, & Magic; MJ as the first MVP to also win the DPOY, the first DPOY to win the scoring title, and the first player to accumulate 200+ steals w/ 100+ blocks in a season twice; Bird becoming the first player to be in the 50-40-90 club twice; MJ vs 'Nique iconic dunk contest; Bird's legendary 3pt contest threepeat; Bird vs 'Nique Game 7 duel; Isiah's sprained ankle game; Lakers fulfilling Riley's repeat guarantee (ending the league's drought since 1969); Worthy recording the first ever Game 7 triple-double; Stockton finally unleashed from the bench to begin his nine consecutive assists titles along w/ racing MJ & A. Robertson (all-time spg leader) for the steals title; and so on and so forth. Basketball in general was also a phenomenon in 1992: The Dream Team, Jordan's shrug game, Magic's last ASG, Bird's epic final triple-double, Rodman's 1530 rebounds, Pat Riley's Knicks vs Phil Jackson's Bulls rivalry begins, Laettner's perfect game w/ famous buzzer beater, Michael Jackson's "Jam" music video, etc...

Bro you are a young guy Im 56 and from day one have been impressed with not only your willingness to dig deep into the history of the league but to understand that evolution doesn't disqualify these Legends from being great!! Yeah guys today shoot threes jump higher and dunk better, but the grit the wisdom the toughness needed to play in the 70s and 80s proves that most of those guys could play in any era Rick Berry, Jerry West etc. Those guys and that NBA is the foundation of today's NBA. Elgin Baylor woulda tore a hole in these dudes today as most don't play D. What you didn't allude to in your introduction is the *reason* they changed the rules to permit professional athletes into the Olympics to begin with: The Soviet Union's athletes were de-facto professionals. An aspiring Olympian from the U.S.S.R. was employed by the state as an military officer, and their full-time duty in their job was to train/play at their chosen event. So rather than continue to play with one arm tied behind their backs, the rest of the world simply abandoned the amateur rule.

Thanks! Sometimes I'm literally doing nothing for an hour, but sitting and pondering as I stare at the wall. lol. I love this stuff just as much as you guys, so sometimes I just really want the answer to some of my own questions, so I research it, and if it seems cool enough to share, it eventually becomes a video.

Nailed it. '88. If the olympics were in 86 maybe that's a better team but that's a hypothetical squared. Imagine it though, Prime Larry, Prime Magic, Prime Michael (he was prime from day 1). OMG.

Oh, what about Dream 2, World games? That was the most electric youthful exuberant team I've ever seen. So raw, so fun and free with Don Nelson at the helm. I know their backcourt doesn't compare, but they were no slouches either. Again great job on picking 88. It's dreamy just to think about all of them in their still in their prime.

Yeah, technically Hakeem wasn't eligible yet, otherwise I would have had him on the 88 team. James Worthy might be a good pick in place of Barkley. You already have 2 true power forwards in McHale and Malone, and Worthy would be great in the fast break with Magic and Stockton. He was the Finals MVP that year too, so he definitely earned a look.

1976 team had winners and players who won the eye test. Magic Johnson of the 1985 LA Lakers wanted Mitch Kupchak; Boston Red Auerbach 1984 team got a winner and defense specialist in Quinn Buckner; Adrian Dantley helped Detroit learn to win and technically got a ring; Tom La Garde won a ring with 1979 seattle supersonics; Scott May, Tate Armstrong, Steve Shepphard were all selected by Chicago Bulls which did not fan out as expected.

Great vid. I knew almost right away 88 would be #1. Larry was an injured shell of himself in 92, but was still a beast in 88. MJ was at his terrifying peak physically, and Magic at his best ever (pre HIV). One change I would make: I think a 41 year old Kareem wouldn’t be the choice, but a healthy dominant Patrick Ewing would be even scarier (and coming off an ‘84 gold.). You could make the Olajuwon argument too but he wasn’t an American citizen back then.
