Hey man when you showed Micro-USB I paused and took a walk around my home to cool off. A micro-USB port is a 100% non-starter for me. Once burned. My preference of USB-A is durable. I suggest buyers obtain one short extension cable and dedicate the plug end to the mic port in a manner of their choosing. Never remove it or put sideways pressure on it. Shure: Wait for the complaints from dead port via everyday usage. Revise this unit.

@eposvox, you can spin the microphone, passing the foam end through the yoke, and unscrew the microphone 180° and then the controls will be on the right side for use in the way you have it mounted. I beta tested the MV7 before launch, and used it in that way. Worked flawlessly.

SM7B was $420 while the MV7 was on sale for $150, so at 1/3 the price it was a no brainer, I'd been watching both for a while waiting to get into higher end microphones and the sale on this came up so boom. If the SM7B went down to $250ish I might've gone that way, but as you said, I needed to get a proper preamp, and a boom arm so, this package price made more sense.

While not a SM7b replacement, the MV7 is a great entry level microphone for someone who can stretch their budget a little more. It doesn't quite kill the Blue Yeti market due to price, however the budget conscious users will see this as a microphone that they can purchase one time and use for their entire career as they upgrade later on to have an interface and can be used remotely without having to take your interface with you. To really compete with Blue Yeti on price you need to be around the $179-199 price range.

What's really good about the MV7 is that the gateway of entry to quality audio is lower than an SM7b. You can buy the MV7 and use it with USB and make content that way, and then once you feel like you want to step up your audio game you can switch to XLR. Beautiful execution from Shure!

Great, informative video. I'm surprised that you didn't mention the obvious difference in plosives on the MV7. I think the SM7B does better because of the longer barrel under the windscreen. I just bought an MV7 this morning and am feeling that I really need an audio interface to increase the gain. I have it turned all the way up to eleven and am unable to overmodulate (yes the limiter is off). As Trashkov says, if I was going to need an interface anyway, I could have purchased a less expensive microphone. Thanks for the knowledge!

It’s a very interesting option but not cheap for streamers and those starting out. I recently got the Rode PodMic and the PreSonus 24C and had to get a Fethead to drive it properly and while that came to a similar overall price I was happy to pay as I was getting a setup with future expansion options. Fantastic overview. I think if they could have kept it at around $200 it would be been a smashing deal. In the U.K. is showing as £270. £210 would have been a better deal and one I would have gone for.

if you are like a traveling podcaster who needs to be able to record on multiple setups, and you cant control if it's xlr or usb and you need that kind of flexibility, or if you're running a 2 pc setup and want to run the same mic to both pc's, i dont think this can be beat. but if you can afford the shure SM7B and always have it plugged into your dedicated at home computer, the SM7B is all around better. so its very use case senario dependent. also it's not bad for people just starting out and want an upgrade path in the future to xlr but don't have the money right now or the knowledge to set up an xlr mic. similar to the blue yeti pro or whatever it's called that has both connections. though the problem with that i remember being was that the in mic amp would override the audio interface amp if you connected it via xlr, and i haven't heard anyone talking about that with this mic yet

During the side-by-side comparison I always close my eyes and try to tell when you switch to a different microphone. Between the MV7 and SM7B I couldn't tell between the two for the raw audio portion but I could tell during the processed portion. IMO the MV7 sounds better.
@GeraldBertramPhotography
@GeraldBertramPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
It's always interesting to me how subjective audio can be. I agree with you that the RAW sounded very much the same but could hear a difference in the processed versions. However, for me, the SM7b sounded better than the MV7 when processed. That being said since the RAW is so close I have a feeling you could match them in post pretty well.
@KuJoe
@KuJoe 3 жыл бұрын
@@GeraldBertramPhotography I fully agree on the subjective part. I always feel like my ears are broken when I enjoy something other people don't like. I think it's because of the types of sound people like. The SM7B makes sense for Epos because he likes that deeper low end, I prefer a fuller range which is why the MV7 sounded better in my ears.

My go-to for talking would be a Rode NT1 or an sE 2300. Especially the NT1 has extremely low self-noise and a nearly spotless frequency response. I'd only go for a dynamic mic if I'd be shouting a lot.
@arthurw8054
@arthurw8054 3 жыл бұрын
I have the NT1 and it's a fantastic mic IMHO, but no condenser is going to be as forgiving if one is recording in an untreated or noisy space. So many/most home podcasters or Zoom users are probably better off with a dynamic for getting decent "broadcast" quality without a lot of know-how or post-processing work.

Of course, I'm still a little salty seeing a micro-usb on the microphone. It is 2020 and I don't know why they didn't go with at least a USB C connector or something more stable and sturdier. Micro USBs are cables waiting to break on you. Stay awesome and thanks!

Great review. Is it just me or does the pop filter seem a lot worse on the MV7. Watched this, Sweetwater, and B&H’s video listening on my airpods - and pops sound really evident. Especially when Sweetwater switched to the SM7b, seemed like pops weren’t noticeable. Thoughts EPOS?

i'd argue the other way around. i want my SM7B to be on the back, not on the bottom part, because it makes it very difficult to spin depending on your boom arm. i have the rode psa1 and it runs into the the locking thumb screws, and i've heard it has the same problem on the blue compass as well

It appears that Shure watched @EposVox video recommending Samson Q2U Dynamic Microphone for having USB+XLR convenience and decided to cobble together one based on their very popular SM7B. perhaps they could have made two-piece hardware though with USB -> [interface]
@EposVox
@EposVox 3 жыл бұрын
1- creating a separate interface and mic would have not really benefitted anyone given there’s plenty of interfaces on the market 2- it’s an optional app. Including an optional app to add post processing bonuses is always a win.

In general, I don't like companion software. At all. It's one of the reasons I bought my Q2U. Even over USB, no weird drivers or software. Just plug and go. Then I can use VST plugins or other processing to tune it to my liking. Plus I could add a second or third for that matter without any conflicts.

The only real problem is plosives. Aiming the mic slightly away from the mouth and attaching the RK345 windscreen from the SM7B to the MV7 basically eliminates this problem. Saves a lot of money and the difference in sound quality compared to the SM7B is basically negligible except for hardcore audiophiles.

The Mv7 fits nicely as a usb/xlr dynamic mic at $250 in the 200-300 range with other microphones like the pro/podcastor and re320 and on the condenser side with NT1, Bluebird, and LA-220.

Hmmm. I was excited when I saw the release of the Shure MV7, but after watching this video, I am not getting this mic. Do not like the Micro-USB or the raw sound. It's just too harsh. A brand like Shure should be able to do a lot better at this price point.
@AudioCraZ

When you take the windscreen off, it looks like a Beta 57 element. I wonder if it is a modified Beta 57 capsule with a bunch of electronics. Definetly sounds closer to that than a SM7B.

@@PeterAlanJohnson Look at it, with the body of the MV7 being shorter, it looks like a SM7 (or a Beta 57) capsule with electronics. MV7 is an impressive mic, but hopefully a few things will be addressed (the volume control is one) in later releases.

tooling costs are not a thing for USB ports. It is likely the price of the USB port itself as a part that influenced the decision, and/or the designer didn't understand that USB 2 can run over a Type-C connector.

@@EposVox it's amazing how cheap purchasing people can be within these organizations. If the part costs the same, but it costs $0.001 more to place the Type-C port per unit, they will not use a Type-C port.

I find it depends on how it was implemented. Some buttons (like the mute on Blue mics) cause a lot of handling noise. A touch input can be very light and quiet. So pros and cons both.
@aractor
@aractor 3 жыл бұрын
Normally I'd agree, but on a microphone I have to disagree. Pushing physical buttons on a microphone can make noise and move your mic positioning. This is the one case where a touch button is preferred because it won't cause any audio pickup from "clicking" a physical switch.
