What I do is first be polite and respectful. If the coach is showing something that day that you already know, just try it their way. If the coach likes you and tells you naww not to pay them anything for visiting, you don't pay them. Offer to help clean the mats after class and then buy a T-shirt. :) if you really liked the place leave them a good review on google! just my 2 cents haha great video!

$200 gi? Sounds like a Gracie barra gym.

Yep, I had the same experience with them in the UK, did the free class and then was hit with the "you must buy the overpriced gi" (I was already wearing a judo gi...) never went again

same thing happened to me, I bought 2 Gis and I'm still training there because the vibe is too good to be that fussy. The pushing of wearing uniform though really is a drag and I think it does chase people away. It's really kinda fucked up...

At our GB gym we don’t mind visitors wearing a Gi from different academies, might be location and management dependent.

I train at 10th planet and everything is always super chill. If someone comes to visit, we try to be as polite as possible to them and learn stuff from them.

Lol I know exactly the gym. I’ve tried 10+ gyms since there are so many great schools in socal. Only one franchise required buying their gi. Other places offer to let you borrow theirs or even let you roll nogi in a gi class if youre trying out. I’ll never train or recommend a place that asks you to buy only their gear.

I was down in Mexico as a white belt and dropped in for a class at Todos Santos bjj and the camaraderie and fun time I had there was awesome, they required nothing, but I insisted on buying at least a rash guard and a T-shirt. I had a great time and will definitely go back to that school if I’m in the area again.

I love visiting gyms, I always do the following: 1) Call ahead 2) Offer to pay 3) If they don't charge, try to buy some merch (if they sell any) 4) Introduce myself to the instructor before joining the class 5) Be very respectful 6) Leave a great review on whatever platforms they prefer

How do I diplomatically ask a prospective new gym if I can always just show up five minutes before rolls stinking of weed? Thanks guys, xox.

It’s a simple but kinda convoluted process. First, you get in your car and go home. Second, you go to another gym.

Corbin Martial Arts (now Carlson Gracie Corbin) down in southeastern Kentucky does that handshake. Been to five other CG schools and that's the only one that does the Rio-style handshake, only at the end of class though and in the handshake line.

Aoj charges $70 for a drop in fee. While it was definitely worth the experience and a few black belts helped me fix my spider guard game, i doubt i would pay that again. Im a purple belt.

If you don't train at any other gym, and you show up more than once, you pay for open mat. Lots of dudes will open mat surf at multiple gyms as a way to not pay anyone and they probably suck and are annoying if they do that anyways tbh. If it's a legit financial hardship you could probably use words and it would be fine but people are loathe to do that for some reason.
@badxradxandy
@badxradxandy Жыл бұрын
Charging for an open mat is moronic. Demanding someone buys your gi for a drop in is pure greed, stupidity and a bad image. All this isn't known to brand new people without prior research. It's designed to take advantage of people who don't know better.
@armedjoy3045
@armedjoy3045 Жыл бұрын
Some gyms will charge for open mat if the person doesn't train anywhere else and they can tell that the person open mat surfs in order to not pay anyone. Whether you think that's cool or not, it happens. If it's an upper belt that's chill it's probably less likely though.
@badxradxandy
@badxradxandy Жыл бұрын
@@armedjoy3045 I guess? I know coaches charge people "full price" if they get a bad vibe from them. Open mat should be open for anyone to try. That guy who mat surfs is a training partner for someone.
@adamabbas1487
@adamabbas1487 Жыл бұрын
If that mat surfer is advanced and has something to contribute, then it should be free or cheap. If you are a low level guy doing an open mat with a class of advanced people, then you aren't contributing anything, so they may have to pay.

Modest open mat fees to cover the use of the facilities and cleanup are totally fine in my book. It’s similar to day passes at health clubs and gyms.
