I started doing Judo at 40 yrs old. I only did it on Saturday for 2 hours, to help my BJJ. I did it for almost 2 years. Wow, it’s crazy physically complex and demanding for being over 40. I stopped doing it because of a wrist injury and just filled that Saturday with a 2 hour BJJ open mat. After that I realized how rough judo was on my body. That one day of judo was requiring a lot more time to recover from. I have not returned back. I like not being injured or hurt.

Yes Judo is super taxing and it is more challenging to recover as you age. Just gotta find the balance on workload and training.

Guys, absolutely loving the podcast! Would love to hear your tips on how to flow roll effectively. The premise sounds easy but every time I try to flow roll with someone (blue, purple & even brown belts do this) they agree to “flow” but just end up going HAM or putting a bit of pressure on, which is responded with pressure and it spirals into sparring. I’ve been trying to up my game loads, going to BJJ every single day but NEED to flow roll to keep consistent / let my body recover.

There’s a couple of things you can to to make your rolls more effective, one is to keep them as slow as you can to work on your technique, if they speed up lock up so they have to stop and then carry on. Use the same time to take a breath. The other thing you can do is make a plan for the week of what you are working on, split it in to three sections guard passing/control or mount/submissions and work on a move from each. Hope this helps.

Tom you might be better off finding a drilling partner. Flow or Light rolls generally are hard to consistently control to a chill intensity. At least with technique or sequence drilling you can agree on levels of resistance to match the difficulty you need from your partner.

@@bulletproofforbjj thanks guys, really appreciate it 🙏🏼 there’s definitely a few lads at my level that would probably be game to link up as drilling partners so will try that out! Whenever I have a good flow roll I feel I learn so much more (at my low level) but thank you for the reply guys 🙏🏼
