I'm not sure the Sennheiser Momentum deserved to be removed from the Wall of Fame by the NAD Viso HP50. While I'm sure the NAD sounds amazing I'm just not sold on the apparent looks/comfort/durability enough to try them out. The Momentum is far more elegant, comfortable for most (unless you have huge ears), and sound "spectacular." I think a Momentum revision with bigger cups and more durable cables would create my perfect closed cup headphone. In fact I ordered the black version up based on your review here.

I watched a few of your reviews on different headphones and found them very helpful and balanced. You definitely provide a better description of materials and technical details than most big review sites out there. You add some down to earth yet clearly audiophile findings, which I highly apprechiate. Thank you very much for your efforts!

Tyler, I just wanted to take a second to personally thank you for all the amazing reviews you do on audiophile (and not so audiophile) headphones. Your reviews have influenced many of my purchases, and I always seem to agree with your impression on everything. You have been and are doing the audiophile community a great service. Thanks!

While I’m waiting for my HD 6xx, I gave the Momentum and the Sony Wh-1000Xm3 a side-by-side listen. And oh man, the momentum just sounded so much more clearer and crisper. Instrument separation was fantastic. The vocals were amazing. And the mid range was fantastic. Really going to miss these.

I figured you would say that. The thing is that I wanted the crossfade Lp2s, and the m-100 is out of my budget. But both are bass emphasized. So I then wanted the M-80. But After seeing the review on the UE 6000, I'm now on the fence. But I have needed that answer for a while for thank you very much! Love your channel and reviews. Keep up the good work.

Most headphone featuring removable cables accept 3.5mm jack. So you could use the 3 button control cable on these too. V-Moda M80, Noontec Zoro, Audio Technica Pro500MK2/Pro700MK2, AKG Q701, the new ranges of Denon headphones all feature removable cable and they are all 3.5mm jack. So these Momentum would work fine with the cable that you like.

I'd take the momentum over the K550 due to the somewhat blurry treble of the 550.
@glitchymusic

Although I didn't mind the color, when it comes to providing cases oppose to bags, it seems something new for Sennheiser. Being reputable as they are, you'd think they would try to compete with the likes of say a V-Moda contoured case. It does show some light with them at least trying to provide a case and extra cable because another thing that can be upsetting is that you can't purchase an extended cable with them; which is extremely important for a dj who is constantly moving in performances.

I just won a bid on these headphones on eBay tonight. All paid for and now just waiting for the seller to send them off. Got them real cheap, even compared to the price of the new Momentum 2.0’s at $299 AUS. Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to hear them because no shop near me have these on display to sound test and don’t know anyone who has these cans, so I’m hoping they do not disappoint. However I don’t think I have heard many headphones in this price range before besides the Bose active noise cancelling headphones which sounded pretty darn good. I’m not into mind blowing bass as much as I used to be, I prefer to listen to my music as close to how the artist intended you to hear it, so hopefully I can achieve that with these Sennheiser’s! :-)
@InnerFidelity
@InnerFidelity 11 жыл бұрын
Well...I switch it up a lot because I have to use the cans I'm reviewing, so I really don't have a headphone I use personally. But I know what you mean and I'd say the answer is: B&W P5, they're just cool; Jerry Harvey Audio JH13 Freqphase, awesome sound and isolation for planes; HD 800, if you want to hear every last detail; Audeze LCD-3 (and LCD-2) killer bass and fun to hear; and yes, I think the Momentum will be a go-to headphone for me around the house.

I would choose the V Moda M80, because they are very portable, good construction, replaceable cable (especially in a gym). Any larger it would be quite cumbersome on your head during work out. The HD25-1 is good too but I prefer the m80

I'm actually interested in reviewing gaming headphone but have some technical issues measuring them. So, I will do gaming cans sometime in the future, but it will take some work setting up for measurements and I have other measurement projects in development, so it won't happen for quite a while.

The "amping need" is dependent on the impedance and sensitivity of the cans. These ones are quite efficient and should be fine from players and not 'need' an amp, though it may benefit. DAC is more of the problem.

Yes, I think so. The L1 is good, but the sound, isolation, and comfort of the Momentum is better, I think.

I just got the Momentum's in the new retro ivory/tan finish...and I must say that I am LOVING them. I was upgrading from Klipsch S4 earbuds (which I also liked but had seriously build quality issues). The soundstage is pretty wide, and the sound is clear and detailed. The ear cups fit me just fine, and this finish looks sexy as hell!
@gaffawebber
@gaffawebber 9 жыл бұрын
The Soundstage seems wider, and I can hear details I couldn't hear with the Klipsch ( which honestly surprised me!). The bass is on par with the Klipsch, but on really bass heavy tracks the Momentums low end sound a tad less muddy. Its been a month and I am still loving the Sennheisers like you wouldn't believe! I've been re-ripping loads of cds to flac just to get the best quality possible and it's like total ear-candy! Mine came with a 30 day money back guarantee. Needless to say I will NOT be taking advantage of that. :-)

@TheSkaterboy678 9 жыл бұрын
gaffawebber haha I have had the klipsch s4's for a couple of years, and I am considering upgrading to the momentums also. I would get something like the sennheiser hd 598, but I am really looking for something that has a substantial amount of bass that isn't overpowering. Do you think they are a good enough uprade from the s4's? I am really looking for headphones that have a good soundstage and have substantial umph in the bass at the same time.

Tyll, you should get your hands on the KEF M500! Until I got those, the Momentum was the best portable headphone I'd heard and I agree with your description of the sound. But the M500 just trumps it! It's not a close call actually, the KEF is clearly a more open, refined and neutral headphone. Not harsh or bright, just very clean and natural.
@4jt25

Agreed, it is over generalizing. But in direct price category comparison (particularly $150+), the SQ of Bose and Beats does fall short of Sennheiser's products IMO.

Indeed. The Bose has NC and Beats has great looks. However in terms of sound quality Senns are undoubtedly better than both for the same price.

Probs the 550, since the soundstage on those is just insane and thus better for gaming. However, if the pair you buy double as your primary audio cans, you'd be happier with the Momentums for the most part (just trust me on this one). It's a hard choice to make, but I got the latter since I only listen to music.

hello, first of all I have to say that I appreciate a lot your clear, detailed and informative reviews. Also your American English accent is well spoken and perfectly understandable to a British English accent accustomed person like myself. I would really like if you could review the new Sennheiser HD8 DJ, I intend to buy a new headset and my choice would probably be among Pioneer HDJ 2000, AKG 267 TIESTO or these new HD8. As a dj I play anything from drum&bass to nu jazz, so above all I value quality of sound and comfort for those long sessions in the studio. Thank you very much for your opinion. (btw... nice shirts...)

Myself and a friend just bought these. His arrived first and unfortunately he is sending them back because he has larger ears and these just are too uncomfortable for him. Mine have not yet arrived, but I tried his on and they are fine for me. That said, these would be better called "on ear" rather than over ear headphones. The cups really are quite small when compared to my Audio Technica M50x phones. My ears are average I'd say and, while I can wear these, the bottom ear lob still sits under the bottom of the padded cup. For mea it's not uncomfortable, but it is noticeable. With my ATH M50x headphones my ears fit completely inside the cups.

The momentums have a much better sound due to them being over-ear compared to the on-ear P5's. However the P5's are smaller and more portable so it really depends on how you plan to use them.

Suprisingly they do get better with even the slightest of amps. Straight out of my iPod Touch they don't quite get the low-frequency tightness as I get when using my Fiio E7 too. An awesome pair of headphones anyhow... Gives my Aurvana Lives a good run for the money :)

I would get the AKG 551's. I bought the 550's but regretted it because they have a huge cord that makes them not very portable. Now I'm tempted to buy the 551's as they are designed for better portability. The AKG's are brighter than the Momentums but have a bit thinner sound.

i like how these sound but for my taste the low end is lacking, perhaps i need some headphone amplifier. i've noticed that ears a easier to fit if you move them a bit back and then forward so your ears kind of bend a bit and won't be between your head and phones. i like them tight to get more bass and isolation. no need to be alarmed about low frequencies, in my opinion they are always lacking even with in-ear stuff :)

I would say the K/Q701, contrary to Tyll's review I didn't find them anything spectacular for the price they fetch (Which is admittedly going to be higher here in the UK). For home use you can probably pick up the classic Sennheiser HD600/650 for the same price as the Momentums.

Design language? Are you referring to "Momentum was designed not for those who follow fashion, but for those who define their own style. A triumph of substance over mere effect. Understatement as a statement. Timeless style that reflects your design principles. Our interpretation of purism, perfected." ? That's what I read on their website. I dig that.

Well if you want the true natural sound, you're going to spend possibly $8000 of audio equipment but for portable headphones these do the best I have tried. They sound natural, not completely flat but the bass kicks in when it needs too. If you listen to all kinds of music, this is the best you can buy for a portable headphone
