My goal in 2022 is to read 12 books, 1 book a month

I started reading “Meditations” yesterday.. I don’t want it to end

Reading Courage is Calling right now, and can't wait to come to the Painted Porch someday! I read 51 books in 2021 (one was Man's Search for Meaning) ... you inspire me by reading hundreds!

I don't usually leave comments due to my poor use of english grammar, but I really want to thank you for making such motivational videos, these days whenever I feel stuck I came back to your channel to find something to listen, sometimes a tiny tiny little thing can cause dramatic impact to your emotions, I'm always trying to figure out how to take things easily, you gave me the solution is to read more, to write more on your journal. I just finished Moby Dick. So excited to move on. That book was taxing but I’m glad I stuck it out.

I like how you have slowed your speech a bit! Sometimes with the faster videos, I get that talking faster might help in making the message more "explosive"(?) but for Stoicism, I kinda feel it's nice if it doesn't feel rushed and you can really let each sentence sink in. Thanks for sharing this list.

Good recommendations. Put a few of them on my 2022 reading list. I agree on biographies. I personally tend to avoid if the person is still alive and if it’s a “with” autobiography.

Great meditation for the day- read Marcus Aurelius "Meditations", Victor Frankle's "Man's Search for Meaning", Albert Camus' "The Plague", Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America", all of Nassim Taleb's collection again this year. Great for perspective. Excited to read your book "Courage is Calling" this year. Will add these to the 2022 reading list.

Thanks for the book recommendations I have just ordered Meditations: The Annotated Edition. May I recommend one of the best books I have read this year The Chip TR Reid. He helps us to re-evaluated what a hero is. Great line in the book. "Being rich never mattered much to Jack Kirby" Marcus Aurelius would have agreed.

Currently reading The Obstacle Is The Way and loving it!

You mention the virtues. I often think of the virtues, could give examples of how to practice the virtues. If we only learn virtues by doing them over and over: then practically how do you practice courage daily? How do you practice wisdom?

A great recommendation as always but I can no longer read about the Holocaust as it shatters my heart and makes me angry at the same time. The Choice is a great book.

Are there any public statues of Marcus Aurelius, and didn't he own slaves? ....Uh oh. The two best books I read this year are Learned Optimism by Martin Seligman and Aging Well by George Vaillant. I also enjoyed the books by Tom Butler Bowdon, like his 50 Spiritual Classics, also, there is a great audio rendition on YT of a Confederacy of Dunces which is a wonderful antidote to the daily calamity.

I appreciate how available you’ve made stoicism for people like me, just getting into it, but I keep running into a liberal/left lean with Courage is Calling and videos like this. Is that just an unintentional consequence of personal feelings making it into your work? I try to just focus on the point of the story that you’re using as an example, but keep running into it. I originally thought this to be an apolitical philosophy.

That is all great stuff, I have finished to read Yes To Life just a week ago, however there's one type of book almost no one is reading about : Critical Argumentation. People need to learn about this stuff, I recommend Fundamentals Of Critical Argumentation by Douglas Walton

You would think that a man who admires the humble Marcus aurelius so much would be humble himself but Ryan Holiday always makes sure that you remember each one of his accomplishments: his conference talks, his published books and the alleged people who subscribed to his newsletter (we all know that it is only a marketing strategy)."over 300 thousands people" lol come on. Sorry going to disagree with you on the Confed monument. If we go around tearing down every marker and monument dedicated to the Confed troops, we are doing a disservice to history by pretending it never existed. The reason I cannot say that Meditations is the absolute best stoic / life philosophy book out there, is bc he wasn't really anti - slavery. And he didnt rape female slaves bc it was wrong but bc it was an indicator of self indulgence... So most of the time I'm pretty confused how to feel about his lessons. They are really eye opening at times but how can I take life lessons from such a person? Still very confused about it all

More and more liberalism in these videos. It’s unfortunate because I really liked the vids and continue to read and practice but the whole political correctness is just killing it. I don’t care about his personal political beliefs but it’s suddenly gotten hard to ignore. The good thing is you can read all of the works from the original great Greek thinkers and not patronize his shop or buy his books. Really you should be getting it from the source anyway.

I'm gonna get some of these books. However, trying to rewrite and getting rid of history in this country whether it's good or bad is absolutely wrong. I completely disagree with you about tearing down statues then they'll put up a statue of George Floyd or some other criminal. I respected what you had to say until now.
