Meanwhile, we have the source code of the software that was originally used to control the 350 deck from an MS-DOS PC. On my next visit, we should try to get it to build with a modern compiler to see what it looked like. And of course we're going to keep working on the DTT1000. Maybe we'll attach a logic analyzer.

Perhaps there is a way to find out (for instance, via comparison of similar logic) how the detection takes place, and maybe force that bit high or low? As with most electronics, other factors can also come into play, such as a missing voltage/ bad regulator or open-circuit fusible link/ IC protector etc, etc. Even supplying the correct power supply voltage, but with insufficient current/ amperage can make it appear as if a fault condition persists..

A very interesting thing to see. I'm also very interested in the possible outcome. If it weren't for the distance I would have volunteered to help out finding the possible problem to this otherwise beautiful engineered protoboard! It sure will be a fantastic addition to the museum. So what's become of that promising revplay function as seen on the 350? Did Philips incorporate some kind of easter egg to get this to work? Damn, these are exciting devices! Thanks for your explanation!
