right! as an austrian i feel the same way. i used to fall asleep listening to cassettes of fairytales as a child and it was completely normal for me that in cinderella the two evil sisters cut off their heel and big toe to fit in the shoe and the pigeons gouge out the sisters eyes at the end. or that in little red riding hood the wolf's belly is slit open so that they can put large heavy stones into it and that he later drowns in agony. I loved those stories.

“The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning” seems to be a version of this folktale. There are 12 merisisters (I think?) and they go to an underground party when music is outlawed
@theresahall8206

7 sisters. They were supposed to prim and proper so much that they were miserable. The king had banned music because it reminded him of his wife who died not long after he gave a music box for their anniversary. Apparently nobody really liked the no music thing but nobody besides the princess would be able to say it and get away with it. So they made a secret music club which Ariel discovered and eventually introduced her sisters to. The nanny found out and snitched on everyone. The crab help ariel to show her father the right path despite his pain.

Theresa Hall yea I know the plot, I’ve seen the movie multiple times. It’s just been a minute. The nanny tried to snitch but couldn’t Sebastian was also going to snitch but then didn’t, which mirrors the failed/successful suitors in the original tale. It’s a different moral due to societal morals being accepting of rebellion and reform than retaining the status quo.

I remember the original version being just like the first version you covered... but around the time they were dancing with the princes the soldier that followed them saw that the princes, trees, and everything was fake, and they were actually in hell. He then warned the princesses, they ran, they were chased, they got to the surface, told the king (proved it with the silver leaves) and the king did some kind of religious thing that kept the demons in hell (there was no murder of the princesses). Then the soldier got the girl, happy ending, etc.

My first exposure to this story was from Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, an animated show that was on Nickelodeon in the early 90s. That version was mostly the first version, except that the handsome princes were monsters in disguise tricking the princesses. The solider had to snap the girls out of their trances and they all had to make a run for it back to the real world. It was a pretty good version.

I remember when my second grade teacher read us “The Twelve Dancing Princess,” and I thought the idea of a secret world they would visit every night was intriguing. It’s not a very well-known tale, is it? I only saw it retold in one other venue, on an anime series about fairy tales. It looks like it was actually a mix of the “Twelve Dancing Princesses” and that Gypsy tale, because it was still 12 princesses going to this secret, magic world thinking that they were dancing with princess, but they were under a spell and were actually dancing with monsters.

You'll find this section towards the bottom. The anime series Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, has only three princesses: Genevieve is the eldest, her middle sister is named Louise, and the youngest is named Julia. It features a twist within the story - it turns out demons live within the magical palace and have placed a spell on Genevieve (and then Louise and Julia) before the soldier, a handsome young man named Peter, realizes the truth and rescues them. In this version, the failed suitors are sent to prison instead of executed and the king frees them once Peter solves the mystery. Additionally Peter acquires the magic cloak and some magic shoes from a kappa and another demon who take the form of two men who were arguing over the cloak and shoes; Peter tricks them into competing over the cloak and shoes which allows him to steal them, after which he discovers them to be demons. The cloak makes him invisible and allows him to see through the demon's illusion, while the shoes allow him to levitate and move quickly. After freeing the girls from their trance Peter aids them in fleeing from the demons, though he loses the cloak and shoes in the process; in return, Genevieve and then her sisters help him when the demons almost pull him back inside their world. At the end Peter and Genevieve fall in love and happily marry.

The 12 dancing princesses reminded me of a true story about an incident called the Dancing Plague. I don't remember what era it occurred in but it all started when a woman in a marketplace began dancing uncontrollably & anyone who came into contact with her did the same. I love Robin McKinley's version of the 12 Dancing Princess' in her book "the door in the hedge and other stories". It fleshes out the background and the curse that is placed on the girls after their mother dies. It's very true to the original, but it's clearer as to why they dance every night and what happens to everyone who tries to discover the princess' secret.

My favorite is called A Princess Curse (I can't remember who wrote it) and it is kind of a combination of the Grimm fairy tale and the Dancing with the Devil. It's been my favorite for a while, and it has the main character marrying a demon.

You've read The Princess Curse too?!?! Yes! Finally! Another person who's read it! Merrie Haskell is the author BTW My favorite part is that not all the princesses are ligit, most are bastards. I've always thought that was flipping brilliant, that's why one dude has not only twelve kids, but they're all of the relative same age. (Thanks Barbie for being realistic in the girls's age difference ((did I just compliment Barbie on realism, dear lord))The king needs a son or grandson so gathered up his progeny, hoping one is a boy but none are, for princess lessons before sending them off to be wed. And then the curse happens and they can't leave to make the royal boy babies. I also really like how you can see hints of the modern version in the book, like, this really happened but it changed over the generations like a legend. Her dad is gardener, he snuck in with an invisible article of clothing from a witch and married one of the princess's. Revka just got deleted cause no one told her story.

nothing is better than watching these videos as a Czech person because these versions are all still very much fairy tales here. Like. Almost all of them have movies and animations that run pretty frequently. I literally grew up on the story of the two princes and the two sisters. Literally most of the stuff you make videos about just reminds me why Czechs tend to never really get scared of creepy stories

I always love to hear more about fairytales. When I was a child, I inherited my great grandmothers' book of the brothers Grimm. It is the entire collection in one and now over 120 years old. It gives me a special feeling when I read it, knowing that my great grandmother heard these exact same words when she was a child.

They weren't " children's stories" way back. Storytelling was one of the winter night past-times in the times before even radio. Families would gather together to stay warm, and to entertain themselves. There were also travelling storytellers, who visited communities to share tales old, and new. The brothers Grimm used stories like these to create their own versions.....which are still considerably more gruesome than modern, sanitised, versions.

Ruth Sanderson’s Twelve Dancing Princesses book was one of my all time favorites growing up. The artwork (shown many times in this video) is absolutely stunning and the story was the Brothers Grimm version. An truly underrated fairytale but my favorite one nonetheless. I always thought the 12 dancing princesses originated from Cambodia 🇰🇭 there is a 2000 year old temple ruins with 12 smaller temples surrounding it (8 are still intact). The legend is a prince came across the 12 beautiful young girls bathing one day and fell madly in love with the youngest sister. He grew up, became king and proposed to her. She refused as her older sisters were all jealous and wanted him. She told him if he truly loved her he would marry all 12 of them. And so he did that over 12 days (khmer wedding used to be held over 12 days back then). There are plenty of Thai and khmer dramas and movies with similar storyline’s and the ending will make you cry. Horrible, drawn out endings. Cos traditionally all stories have meanings behind it like don’t marry a man just for wealth/looks. 💕🥰🙏🏼 so interesting learning about all the folklores though! Please keep up the wonderful content !

That fairytale reminds me of one of the "chasse-galerie's" story about a young woman dancing with the devil. The "Chasse-Galerie" is an ensemble of French Canadian tales about the devil and the devil's hunt. It literally means The Hunt's Ensemble. The most popular story is about a flying canoe and a race against time. We usually recount those stories while playing a traditionnal "instrument". Being poor hard working settlers, the instruments were quite rustic (boots, spoon, guimbarde and, if you're lucky, violin) which gives a special flavor to the stories. The stories mainly are from the old country, but changed over time when mixed with the Native's stories. French Canadians are usually of mixed blood, having at least one ancestor being Native since the French wanted to settle, not conquer. The catholic church was also very enthousiastic in converting the Natives, which probably helped spread those devilish stories.

I've seen the last one filmed. But the ending was significantly changed. In the film the prince was told the normal sister lifted his curse and the sheap headed one was so heartbroken she went to fairies she met before. The fairies gave her an option to became one of them with a memory wipe bonus. She agreed and stayed there while a potion was being prepared. Meanwhile the sister told prince the truth and he went to search for his savior. He found her, talked her out of drinking the potion, kissed her and viola! Another curse was lifted.
