@spaceghost Why be so mean for no reason? Attacking people is not the way to change a mind. Attacking causes bitterness and is a disease. If corrections are to be made you can say so without being like that. Honor yourself better please. How can anyone take you seriously unless you come into this in a way that contributes to conversation instead of argument and anger.

This story makes Hephaestus sound like an absolute badass and a likable guy at that. Dionysus also taught all the gods that being a friend to your opponent gives you a better chance of achieving your goals than to manipulate, seduce, or threaten them.

I like how Hephaestus story was basically a abandonment story. Focusing on a woman's wrong intentions for a baby. Then neglecting the baby. Then the baby turned to man comes for revenge. As a child given up by his mom, I really enjoyed this story. The theme of the story really resonates with me. Hephaestus my favorite god.

There’s a lot of powerful symbolism with Hephaestus when you dig deeper and give it some thought. His whole life story can be very neatly summarized with and old Indian proverb; once the house is built, the carpenter is forgotten. And it gets even more interesting when you compare him to his effective rival in the Greek pantheon, Ares. Hephaestus is physically unattractive, but he’s kind and works hard to make things for those who show him kindness, much like how craftsmen of all kinds do work that doesn’t seem fun, or enjoyable and which few would try to follow in their footsteps, but their actions improve the lives of everyone at the cost of little more than time. Ares, on the other hand, Is often regarded as being very handsome, much like how promises of honor, glory, fame, and fortune can make war and conquest seem enticing to young men, only for them to find out too late that, Just like Ares himself, it takes a great toll and offers very little to those who commit themselves to it. The saddest part is embodied by Aphrodite’s relationship with the two of them. By all right Hephaestus is the one who’s most deserving of a happy life, but the pleasures he works hard to be deserving of are claimed by Ares, who simply strolls in and takes what is effectively the fruits of labors he never contributed to.

Lol I’ve always heard that Hera changed her appearance to get Zeus to sleep with her and when Hephaestus was born Zeus believing Hera had cheated on him threw the baby off Olympus. Hera then changed her form to prove that Hephaestus was Zeus’s son. But the fall from Olympus had deformed Hephaestus so badly that his immortal body couldn’t regenerate so he was left scarred and deformed

that's wild! there is another well known variant of Hephaestus's origins where he's both Zeus and Hera's son and a perfectly normal god. The bigger twist comes when he helps Hera after Zeus punishes her for trying to kill Heracles, then Zeus punishes him by throwing him off Mt. Olympus and THAT is how he gets crippled. I don't like that version nearly as much but still pretty entertaining :)

Not the only revenge story of Hephaetus. He caught Aphrodite cheating on him with Ares. So he built an invisible net on their bed to catch the two in the act. Poseidon ended up convincing him to release the pair via a refund of the dowry he paid for Aphrodite's hand.

There’s another “Revenge of Hephaestus” that’s my favorite myth. It’s when Hephaestus finally had it with Aphrodite cheating on him with Ares all the time, and enacting an awesome (and hilarious) plan to not only catch them in the act, but humiliate them both in front of all the other Olympians. I just love imagining the look on their faces when they were caught and the reactions of the other gods (especially Hermes and Dionysus) when they came in to see what was going on!

yeah I dont get the hate for Aphrodite and Ares here she never wanted to marry him and was forced onto him you cant force romance if someone doesnt love you they dont you cant force them to be with you whatever heart break Hephaestus suffered was his own making staying with someone that had no affection for him married or not
@omnipresentl1316

@@durrangodsgrief6503 that was more of Zeus because he wanted to reward Hephaestus and Aphrodite was causing conflict among the Gods so he figured "two birds, one stone" and wed her to him in hopes of keeping a balance. (It didn't work very well but I'll at least give him props for trying to keep it together) Plus, I find it hard to take Aphrodite seriously with how petty and cruel she is towards mortal women for things other people said or just for being above average in attractiveness. Not to mention she complains about how Hephaestus looks (not even that bad from the statues) but yet she gets ran through the pantheon and countless humans while making a woman fall in love with a bull. I can't really feel bad for her as Hephaestus never made her do something she didn't like a side from accepting the marriage like every other God in the pantheon would have done.

Hera makes much more sense as just being malevolent rather than being genuinely mad at Zeus for cheating. I imagine she likes Zeus cheating on her to give her excuses to mess with people. She never gets mad at Zeus, always leaves people alone after traumatizing them with no explanation or wanting to change their minds, never warns people not to do adultery with Zeus, and sometimes she is just mean to people completely unrelated to cheating. Zeus only really shows an interest in making his children powerful and have fulfilling legacies anyway, not their day-to-day happiness Zeus and Hera are a perfect couple. Their relationship just works on a fundamental level.

Hera is always jealous, but I think it goes deeper. She must feel insecure and has convinced herself she needs Zeus' respect to be whole. So she doesn't respect herself and maybe secretly feels she is unworthy of love or undeserving somehow (if you've ever felt jealous, you know). So Hephaestus was all this, whether true or not, manifest. But in the end, we learn that what Hephaestus really inherited was Hera's intelligence and cleverness and, being the goddess of motherhood, her kindness and devotion and he was right in front of her to see. Yet she still can't find her confidence, her own respect in the true value for that in herself whether anyone else does or not. Sad.

One thing I think is that in mythology Hera had Hephaestus so ugly precisely because she was consumed by the desire for revenge against her husband, consequently Hephaestus was born ugly and immediately rejected by her, then of course revenge on his part. A story that teaches what it means to be conceived in the womb of a woman full of hatred who gives birth to monsters. If it had gone differently, if Hera had wanted Hephaestus not out of pure revenge but out of pure justice, he would have been a more divine son than Apollo himself (perhaps), with a truly rich marriage with Aphrodite.

I prefer the story where Zeus tied Hera over the pit of Chaos for her attempted rebellion. None of the gods dared to free her, except for Hephaestus, who sneaked his way down to Tartarus and freed his mother from certain obliteration. Falling into Chaos would supposedly utterly destroy any being, immortal or not, and it was then that Hera finally acknowledged her son and gave him the love and respect he deserves
